Yeah, either I didn't communicate my thoughts clearly enough or you're just not comprehending what I wrote, because with this post, I agree with you 100%, especially regarding Smith Switch. I hate when people get in the right lane expressly for the purpose of cutting back in, even when it's clearly posted "Right Lane is for Right Turns Only" 1/4 mile back from the actual intersection.

The light is long enough... as you say there is a non-stop flow of traffic on both axis.. you can't make one side longer without impacting the other. The improvements on several fronts they've made here over the years has helped greatly, the better signals, the longer turn lanes, additional turn lanes, etc. The problem is the larger cummulative one.. greater flow here is still hampered by the bottlenecks downstream at broddrick and pacific.

But this intersection is the jist of the original post.. what redon highlighted is one of the behaviors I was inferring to in the post. Those that bypass the line, gambling they can cut in at the last second.. or nosing their way into the queue up front knowing full well they intended to cut in line. It's no different then those who cut in line in any queue.. knowing that most people won't stand up to them and tell them to get to the back of the line. They do it, knowing 9 out of 10 times no one will say anything, so most of the time they get ahead.

If society as a whole would stand up to this behavior - people would know they wouldn't be able to get away with it most of the time.

So whose in on the stickers??? :) :)

We really need cars that drive themselves. When we have that, all of the problem of rude drivers, inattentive drivers, ripple affects from lane changes/slamming on brakes, and the safety issues that all of these problems create will go away.

I know it sounds far-fetched but with the technology we've come up with in recent times, it really should be possible. We have GPS. We have wireless communication tech such as bluetooth and NFC that would allow cars to talk to each other. We have grid computing that allows separate devices to share computational tasks and work together to a solution. Google has developed such tech and has automated vehicles driving around in California.

and yet even NASA still puts a pilot in the chair :)

While I agree with you gunzour... and that the # of accidents or fatalities that would be attributed to system failure would be FAR less then those we currently see due to human error... society is still going to not trust the machine and be resisitant to giving computers full control.

No system is fault free - but humans still make way more mistakes.

Actually NASA does quite a few unmanned missions. :)

You may be right, the obstacle of acceptance may be too much to overcome. I really think the biggest benefit of such a system is that computers do not react emotionally to unexpected / rude / dangerous behavior, they would just compensate for it.

The interesting thing about the way Google developed it is that it only needs 'acceptance' by the individual equipping their car with it. My understanding is that it is perfectly legal even today, as long as someone is in the driver's seat able to take over if necessary. I suppose if it started to pick up steam there would be someone somewhere who would try to outlaw it.

The stress level indicated by this thread alone can, for many people, justify the $4 or so for the Greenway.

It's not stress - it's more a humorous way to say.. how can we as a collective deter the 'me me me' mentality taking over society.

As for the greenway.. we can talk about the backups caused by people still paying cash/credit every day while commuting vs renting EZpass!

Which BTW, we are lucky in that we still have a zero cost model for EZPass unlike other states.. such as Maryland which have use it or lose it type models.

if someone slapped a sticker on The Man's car for a perceived :censored: move, the only damage done would be to said sticker slapper...

i vote NO to stickers, but i am in favor of taking pictures of their vehicle and posting them on a WALL OF SHAME of :censored::censored: Drivers of Ashburn. :) there's actually a website dedicated to such drivers but the admins would kick me out of here for using the site name... :) google is your friend.

But here's the beauty of it all..

Normally people can get away with these moves because they know they can just drive off and technically they haven't done anything illegal enough to actually worry about the police.

The same rings true for the stickers. The sticker slapper gets to drive off, and haven't caused any property damage so what could they be charged with? And if the reciever were to actually harm the sticker slapper, by damaging their car or the person - they've commited enough of a crime to worry about the police.

That's why I think it's brilliant.. it uses the same 'yeah, but what are you going to do about it' freedom the selfish person has.. against them :)

    I like this better because
    1) it takes effort for the person to get 'off' the list per say. They can't just ignore it like they can just ignore some website... no 'out of sight, out of mind' possible here
    2) it takes enough effort that people wouldn't do it frivolously
    3) the repetition of the process may actually be enough to influence behavior

Controled by some dude sitting in Houston or JPL :)

But would you expect a system where someone has NO control? if they do, the emotional thing is still there because the user just takes control and does their road rage thing anyways. To be true, the user can't have any control except safety override. I doubt we'll ever see that in cars. To make such a switch, it would have to be in a totally different medium.

Yeah, the previous news posted about the Google work infer its kind of through ambiguity of the law they can do it. Some lobby I'm sure would come up with reason to fight it :)

yes... make people more ignorant and reliant on technology and unable to do things for themselves... make them less responsible for using common sense, courtesy and manners learned in kindergarten... give them one less way to interact with other humans and let the self centered arrogance grow- I LIKE IT.

i think we need food chewing machines next and an IV drip to get the nutrition into our bloodstreams. i'm sick of listening to people smack and chew and crunch, and spit food when they talk with it in their mouths...:eww:

I'm serious in that we need to find ways to turn this society away from the downward spiral of 'me me me' and 'why aren't you fixing it for me' lazy attitude this country is racing to.

Let me get this straight, you are promoting vandalism, correct? Also, drivers placing their cars in park (or turning it off if a manual car), getting out (in traffic) and walking (in traffic) placing a bumper sticker (with adhesive on a windshield) blocking someone’s line of sight and you don’t think the police would need to be involved?

    - take away texting, email, IM, facebook and message boards for a month.
    - make people talk to each other to resolve problems and remember how to read body language and voice inflections
    - instead of the pledge of allegiance, make everyone recite the golden rule before they are allowed to drive, shop, dine, go to work or go to school
    - bring back corporal punishment and get these kids back in line
    - stop giving a trophies out for "participation"- winners get the spoils- want a trophy? WIN next time.
    - stop coddling kids and making mediocre GOOD ENOUGH. expect more and you will get more. many parents are making weak, entitled adults out of their children who won't know HOW to deal with adversity or disappointment, or know that cutting the line in your car is BAD MANNERS.

that's all for now... I will pontificate more after I update my facebook status and DVR Jersey Shore...

Wholeheartedly agree. Rt 66 Eastbound is a perfect example. There are several off ramps used all the time by cutters. I've had a huge gap behind me where a car could safely merge without disrupting the flow of traffic but instead feels the need to get one more car ahead, cuts in front of me and forces me to break. Nice. That's not defensive driving, it's erratic driving endangering other drivers and should be considered "reckless" and a "misdemeanor".

Would these same people feel they have the right to cut while in line at the movie theater or the grocery store because the line is too long or moving too slowly? I'll answer and say yes!

Well lets deflate some of your hype here...
    • Vandalism? We're talking about something that is easily removed. Its no more vandalism then the people putting an advert on your window/door. That's why I like a sticker.. sticker on glass comes off easy.
    • Getting out of your car - yes. People do it all the time. Is it great? No, but neither is the jackwad who just pulled the stunt. If the person hit you, you'd get out just the same.
    • Turning off the car? - I don't know about the cars you drive, but I have this thing called the parking brake.. and neutral in the gear box. Works great.
    • Blocking the line of sight? Oh my.. how do these people survive today with all these OBX stickers and other things on their cars?? Oh the pain they must have.. the risk they put us all in! Get a grip. You put something behind the driver's position most people can't see it anyways.

Hyperbole like this is why we have people suing over the stupidest thing in this country.

What is your alternative suggestion? Just let people keep doing it more and more? Let's here solutions!!! That's why the thread topic was 'a proposal'

I'll say no, and not just be arbitrary (I know, a shocker!).

Most people who drive stupidly feel a sense of security (or is it invulnerability?) wrapped in couple thousand pounds of steel.
