Local Teen Drug Use

Does anyone have a sense of how prevalent substance abuse is in our schools for teens? What drugs? My oldest is 15 and at the age where I'm trying to keep tabs on what is thrown at him to help him make smart choices, however, the info I get from him is cryptic at best.

I want to believe in such an affluent area drugs aren't as available or used etc., however, I may just be in denial. Especially when I think about what I was doing at that age or shortly thereafter. Ugh.

 

As someone who works in an Ashburn high school, I can tell you that alcohol is the drug of choice......even going as far as coming to school drunk. Prescription drug use is the other big abuse. On any given day there are students getting caught selling mommy or daddy's hydrocodone or oxycotin I am sorry to say....

 

Alcohol is no surpirse, however, a little surprised to hear about prescription drugs.

Drugs are used in every type of area, especially affluent areas. Kids from affluent families have more money to buy drugs.

 

So if the kids are getting caught selling or possessing prescription drugs are the consequences as draconian as Fairfax County's -suspension, not allowing the student back on school grounds, and moving the student to another school? If yes, then this might be a "talking point" for your child.

 

I have said it before. There are more drugs for sale at Briar Woods than at the CVS down the street. You should go talk to the school resource officer. I am sure he can tell you a lot.

A D.C. elementary school student was charged with possession of a controlled substance Thursday after being accused of taking cocaine to school and sharing it with four classmates who were hospitalized after ingesting the drug.
