We are trying to decide if its worth it to get the garage finished and add some MUCH NEEDED storage in our garage. Any recommendations or suggestions would be appreciated! And, anyone who has done it and think it is or isn't worth it, love that feedback too! Thanks!!

That was our first project moving in, building some shelves against the wall with the back door.

I set the bottom shelf at about 3' so I could get the trash container and lawn mower under. Let me know if you want pics, I spent a lot of time thinking about the design. Ended up bolting it to the wall with lag bolts in to the studs, strong enough to climb on.

We installed some of the bike pulleys to get them high up in the garage, but easy to get back down. Put two of the Stainless cage type shelves above car height on each side; they hold the car top luggage carrier, coolers, boogie baords and such. Then my hubby took a wood door and put it ontop of two sawhorses he got at HD. Underneath that is our snowblower, on top is our lawnmower (don't currently use) and we could fit our two reclcying bins there as well. We have our ladders on hooks. My hubby can actually park his motorcycle sideways in front ot he Door counter and still get the convertible in. We have room then to have the trash can against the wall as well as a standing freezer to the right of the stairs down into the garage. If you want to see how it all works, come on by. We think it looks very well put togehter, without speniding all the moola to get it Spiffed up like we had a garage with high end cars in it! It was drywalled in by VM before we moved in.

Yes, worth it! Paint first, you can go to HD and find all their reject paints, choose light colors and mix them all together if they are neutral. I got 7 gallons of paint there for about $25 not that long ago. You'll need some paint, chances are the drywall is 'dry' and will suck it up. Shelving around the walls, bike and tool hangers, and even those shelves that you put over the garage door are really great. (Allow your doors to open and utilize that space above the open door!) Now Closetmaid makes the same type of Elfa shelving for much less. Hang one track at the top, and place the shelves where you need them.

    Mike and Brassy,

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I would love to see some pictures if it's not too much trouble.

So I took on the garage storage project as well...I Did it as a DIY 2 weekend project... I did it for 2 reasons... first, our master bedroom was over our garage and during the winter it was obvious the draft below (in the garage, which was not insulated ) was effecting the temp in our bedroom and thus our heating bills. 2nd, we have no basement, and a very small crawl space at that, so storage was at a very high premium... Nonetheless I insulated, drywalled, puttied / finished, painted, added molding and finally added the racks for storage... I got the racks from http://www.thegarageorganizationcompany.com and I am extremely happy with them.

Here you go, can be done with a chop saw, a drill and some lag bolts. Shelf material for the shelves (flat part) was cut to size by home depot.

First use lag bolts to attach the back verticals to the studs. Very sturdy. Also might want to have a level handy. Kim painted it.

Overall material cost was probably under $40.

Also added these above the garage door, to hold some misc trim pieces for the house, and my "gutter clutter buster" attachments (attaches to a shop vac to clean out the gutters).

    https://www.gutterclutterbuster.com/

Kind of funny website, the guy has a video of his wife cleaning out the gutters...

The trick was adding boards with lag bolts, then screwing the holders into those. The previous owner just had them in the drywall and I was always afraid it was going to fall on the car.

    Hi Everyone,

I am thinking of adding insulation to my garage, but I was wondering if a permit from Loudoun County and/or approval from the HOA is necessary !?

    Please let me know...

    Thanks so much !

I've been thinking of installing something like this. I checked them out online, which rack (size and weight capacity) did you use??
