The normal timing for routes was probably way out of sync since there was a significant drop in the number of people who had their cans out in the morning. When Patriot came in my area (earlier than normal), there were only a handful of cans out. Then, in the afternoon when Patriot picked up yard waste, I saw a lot of cans out (too late) and not many yard bags.

I don't really buy this "it's a holiday so nobody had any trash" concept, to be honest. I think people are putting their trash out the same time they normally do, but Patriot is coming way earlier than usual in order to put in a billable day without having to do much work. This seems to happen every time trash pick up falls on a holiday. When Patriot's normal pickup time is 3pm-5pm (for our street), you really can't blame us for putting the trash out later than 7am. Most of the homes on our street had trash out yesterday. Were they out by 7am? I dunno, but I know I would have heard a trash truck if it came by at 8:30am (as Patriot is claiming).

I would rather see the HOA not pay for holiday pickup at all, rather than go through this charade every holiday.

Gunzour- I agree with you on this.

After reading more of the comments on this thread, Im starting to not buy into the "it's a holiday so nobody had any trash" concept either. To boot, I've always put my trash out by 9AM and it always gets picked up much later than that time. I don't see anything on the trash recyling information page on Broadlands Homepage saying that we need to put out our trash way earlier than normal on Holidays. So I find the comment posted on this thread "Next time put your trash out earlier and don't blame them for 'wanting to get off work earlier'. Get your trash out earlier" unwarranted and uncalled for. I still firmly believe and wouldn't blame the trash guys wanting to get off earlier so they could enjoy the memorial day activites just like many of us do. If it would save Broadlands HOA additional $$$, then by all means cancel the trash pickup on all holidays since "there is less trash being put out". Can't hurt to wait until the next available pickup day.

The guidelines for trash collection clearly state "Trash must be placed at the curbside and/or designated area by 7 a.m. for collection."

If anyone had trash out by 7AM which was not collected, please let the HOA staff know so we can look into any issues.

Patriot begins every workday at 7 am. They do not have "billable days" but have a yearly contractual agreement. We request that trash be at the curb no later than 7 am because we do not require the contractor to run the identical route every day. This is the standard practice for the industry. My apologies if there was inconvenience. Just as an FYI - Trash is not picked up on New Years Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day... all other holidays; please expect trash to be picked up as early as 7am.

Sure, but there are guidelines and then there is reality. The reality is our trash is always picked up late in the afternoon. I'm not going to leave my trash out overnight just to meet an arbitrary 7AM deadline when I know the actual pickup schedule is much later.

Patriot seems to be hiding behind the 7AM rule in order to get out of a full day's work on holidays. I'm thankful for the workers on the trucks and am glad they get to enjoy some of the holiday but the trash company shouldn't be billing us a full day for picking up what - 10% of a typical day's volume?

I have done so, as they seem to have skipped our street yesterday.

Exactly my sentiment here. I put it out by 9AM and usually they pick it up late in the afternoon. That's the reality of it. Aside from holidays, its never picked up before noon. It all depends on where you live on the street and where they begin their route. I'm willing to bet that they always begin their route at a certain area.

UPDATE: Patriot reported back by email that they don't recycle these items and to chuck it into the trash instead.

No way did my neighborhood put their trash out the same way as on normal days. I leave for work on a normal day at 6:30 am and the streets are pretty full with cans. I was still around this morning at 7:30 am and there was barely a can out.

This is all quite amusing. Where I come from (Wales), we have no dumpsters. Aluminium (sorry still can't get used to saying "aluminum") wheel-less trash cans are the norm - and, you know what, the bin men won't touch them. No sir-ree. You must take your bags out of the bins and drag them to the end of the street (or lane if you are a country bumpkin like me) and hope for the best. Sometime they come, sometimes not.

My point being. I still consider twice weekly trash, recycling, and yard waste collection a divine privilege and the absolute epitome of a civilized nation! Late or not!

wow - a lot of moaning over something with a very simple problem... put your trash out in the morning or the night before. We have these massive trash bins - why are people so adverse to putting the trash out the night before?

Why should we put them out the night before? Maybe some folks think someone will knock them over in the middle of the night, perhaps? I dunno but because the trash folks don't hit my street until mid-afternoon, why should I put them out the night before? Is there a law that says we have to? :rolleyes3: Sorry, couldn't resist throwing that last bit in..Ha!

Our trash was out before Patriot claims to have driven down our street. I was awake and home when they claim to have driven down our street. Trash trucks are loud, very loud, and there is no mistaking it when they drive down the street. Patriot didn't drive a trash truck down our street when they claim they did, and they certainly didn't do it before we put our trash out.

Honestly, it is really not a big deal to me if they pick up on holidays or not. I am ticked off, though, that they are claiming to have picked up on our street at a time that I know for certain didn't happen.

I had heard some disposal companies were testing out stealth technologies for their equipment. It is so cool to think that we may be a test market.

Patriot came through for the recycling around 2PM in Southern Walk just about midway through my lawn maintenance. I had to scramble and get the cuttings transferred from the mower to the bag and get some larger shrubs loaded up before they drove by. Made it just in the nick of time... can't recall seeing the trash service though, we don't typically put trash out on Monday.

One things for sure..they weren't poking around at all, those guys were scrambling.

Again with the 'what if...' extremes taking over what *really* happens 99.9999% of the time. Well, I've lived here for over 12 years... and I've never had to worry about vandalism of my trash. The issue is animals - which isn't a big deal if you actually use the trash bin (which is difficult for some people).

And why should you? Is it difficult for you to go outside in the PM instead of AM or something? You act like its more work or something. Here's some reasons you 'should'

    - Never have to worry about what time the trash truck is coming
    - Never have to worry about 'did the trash truck come yet?'
    - Never have to bore yourself with 'I wonder if they will come on a different time because its a holiday'
    - Never having to rush outside because you hear the trash truck coming
    - Never having to take the trash out in your work clothes
    etc etc etc

You're basing the behavior off something that is not garunteed - and then moaning when your expectation is not met.. instead of taking the simple route that makes the whole thing moot.

    So why? Simplicity

Well you call it a charade.. which you seem willing to play along with.. vs. just making the whole problem go away all together with simple change in behavior. Dunno.. seems to be a fight people are willing to impose on themselves instead of the simple solution.

The simple solution would have been for Patriot to come down our street and pick up the trash yesterday, which they did not. You seem to be sidetracked by the issue of putting out trash the night before versus the morning. I'm comfortable taking my chances, because it fits my routine better to take it out in the morning anyway. If I miss the trash because it comes early one day so be it, that's the beauty of twice-a-week service. But it didn't come early yesterday. It didn't come at all.

My guess is that in their rush to get through the neighborhood they skipped our street by accident. It's not a big deal if they make a mistake. What's annoying to me is when I reported it to the HOA, as I was asked to do, they told the HOA I was wrong and gave them some exact time they were supposedly on our street. I'm sorry, I was here at that time, they weren't. I wasn't asking for compensation or anything in return, I was just reporting a problem. I don't like it when I try to report a problem to a business and they try to argue facts with me instead of taking my report seriously. My complaining about their 'charade' of playing hurry-up on holidays is because if they weren't in such a rush to begin with, they probably wouldn't have missed our street.

And is there a law that says they have to pick up trash on your street at a specified time?

How about we draft certain streets to man the trash trucks on certain days? If you man the trucks when called you pay $0. If you wish to opt out you pay $1,000/year.

Who's in? I'll be a jumpin' on that truck when called.
