We are new to the area and have cards already for Harris Teeter, Giant, and Safeway. I feel like I don't have the time (energy) to research prices and such. Has anyone done that already? Harris Teeter is really nice, but seems expensive. Could also be that food prices are higher here than in Richmond where we moved from. Any thoughts?

There is one in the Dulles 28 Center at Waxpool and Rt 28, and one in Leesburg at Rt 7 and Crosstrail Blvd.

There is no question... Wegmans has the best prices.

Just don't go at the peak rush if you can't deal with the crowds.. but the price deltas are huge and wegmans has tons of specialty stuff too that people like.

HT is the most expensive.. Safeway inconsistent.. and Giant has just become insignificant due to the lack luster price and any reason to really drive further to get there.

HT is nice - just stupid expensive... like 20-30% commonly on items compared to wegmans.

Wegmans is great! but I do most of my shopping nowadays at Global Food, which is located at Ashburn Farm Pkwy & Ashburn Rd (The old SFW). Not only are the prices there awesome, they have a great selection of meats and produce. Do you know anywhere else you can get 'fresh' tilapia? I also love trying new things and there's no shortage of that at this international market. This is my personal favorite grocery store in the area.

Wegmans is an entirely new grocery experience if you have never been to one. There is also a newer one in Leesburg.

I'm not sure how big your family is but Costco and Sam's also have good deals on bulk items.

One nice thing about Harris Teeter is that it is close here in Broadlands and open 24/7 if you need something after hours.

    Thanks

    Mike

harris teeter sales and specials are great. i like the 10 meal each week, and they have a lot of buy one get one free sales (you don't have to buy 2 items- they just give you half off). wegmans is nice but i always blow my savings on a really nice cheese or wine, which yes i deserve (ha!), but if i am trying to be a thrifty grocery shopper it really is too tempting to go in there...

Wegmans is nice and has good prices, especially on their store brand items. Only rarely have I tried a Wegmans brand product and not liked it. Meat quality there is good and prices are decent. The fancy deli/specialty section is not cheap but the food is good.

Harris Teeter is more expensive except when you buy something on sale - and I mean a REAL sale, not 20 cents off so be sure to check the original price. They often put things at Buy 2 get 3 Free. You just can't beat that. Sales on meat are pretty good, too.

I do my regular shopping at Wegmans and go to Harris Teeter to buy what's on sale or if I don't want to fight traffic by Wegmans.

I agree that HT is a little more expensive on some things, but you can't beat the convenience, everything is always fresh, and the staff. I always hate going to a grocery store and having the checkout clerk and the bagger engaged in their own conversation. I have been to a local Giant, where I was never recognized by the cashier, not one word spoken, and that will never happen at Harris Teeter. If you sign up for their e-VIC program, it will track the things you buy a lot, and send you a weekly email with those items listed when they are on sale. I just like the store and am willing to pay a little more for most things.

Paper and cleaning products I will usually pick up at Walmart when I am over there, but I am a 90% of the time HT shopper.

    'a little more expensive'??

It's not uncommon for an item to be 3.79 at HT and 2.49 at Wegmans.. or scales similar to that. It's not nickle and dime.. it's 20+% in many areas. In some areas the prices are basically the same.. like Bread. But in many dry goods the price delta is massive. I feel GUILTY every time I go into HT the price delta is so much.

HT always has deals going and you can pick up deals that beat Wegmans. Wegmans brand name products are good and when compared to national brands available at other stores definately are cheaper. HT also rewards frequent shoppers with free stuff based on how much you purchase. HT staff is helpful and personable.

I patronize both and like both of them.

Thanks so much for all of your responses! I definitely need to check out Wegmans. I passed the one in Leesburg today, but I need to find out where Rt 28 is. Where is there a Sams or Costco? There are four of us and we've never done the club stores before, but it would be convenient to have like 50 rolls of toilet paper at one time. I will probably do what some of you do and patronize both HT and Wegmans. I'll sign up for HT's e-VIC and get the deals and double coupons. Safeway is the closest to us though. When we lived in California, we shopped at Vons, which is Safeway, so I feel familiar with the brand.
Is there a CVS close? I used to get all of their deals and extra care bucks, but I haven't seen one around here.

Mel_cap, if you decide to go to the Broadlands Safeway, please make sure to check expiration dates for all your items. They have been notorious in the past for having expired products on their shelves and coolers. Additionally, their quality and selection when it comes to fruits and vegetables was also horrible in the past. We use the Safeway as a 'quickie-mart'; we only go there if we're missing one item or need something quickly and don't want to drive all the way to Harris Teeter.

We DO use the Safeway gas station as our main refueling point for our cars.

There is a CVS on the corner of Ashburn Farm Blvd. (aka Farmwell) and Ashburn Village Blvd. If you know where the shopping center with Bertucci's, Fuddruckers, and IHOP is, it's across the street from there.

Wegmans is on Waxpool near 28/Sully Rd.

Sure, but watch their sales because they really make a big difference. Of course, like any store, you want to be sure you know a reasonable price for an item so you can tell if the "sale" price is actually good. I was at Target once and the shampoo I was looking at was on sale for $4.99. When I lifted the sale tag on the shelf, the regular price tag was a few cents more. Big sale!

For produce (fruit & veggies) you really can NOT beat Global Mart, especially on a Thursday when they have the freshest produce.

For example, earlier today I purchased the following produce:
16 apples (large granny smith & Fuji - same UPC code as Wegmans & HT), 8 Mangos, 6 red organic grapefruits, 5lbs bag of clementines, 1 Whole Pineapple, 10 Persian Cucumbers, 5lbs of organic Carrots, 2lbs of organic Celery, 5lbs of Lychee fruit, 10lb Seedless Watermelon, 2lbs Cabbage, etc...

I had 16 full grocery bags and my total bill was ; $31.34 (with tax).

IMHO: No one in the area can touch the price or quality of produce that you find in most Asian markets. Although Wegman's comes close but has a limited selection of produce.
