This morning I pass the Verizon HQ and notice people on a picket line trying to save their Health Ins.
Thinking us Union or even non-union people who live around here join them in their fight.

They are not trying to save their health insurance. They are trying to keep from paying ANYTHING towards their insurance premiums, including co-pays. As of right now, they pay NOTHING towards healthcare. There are other issues too.

I don't support them one bit. I pay just like many of us towards our health insurance such as premiums and co-pays. They should be doing the same thing too. No wonder that the cost of doing business at Verizon is kind of high because the company has to foot the bill. Won't surprise me if Verizon lays off people due to the high cost of covering employees.

Additionally, the workers on strike are part of Verizon's landline division, a division that has slowly been shrinking as the dependency on landlines has shrunk over the years. From what I'm reading, it accounts for about 12% of Verizon's revenues. Yet, these workers are claiming that Verizon is making BILLIONS and should continue to pay for all their benefits, etc. Folks need to look at the actual revenues for that division and they will see that there's no way it can remain profitable if they have to pay out for all the demands made by the union.

They're not losing their health insurance, they are simply being asked to start to pay a portion of it, like most of us already do!

Sorry, but I can't support a group that believes that it is entitled to have ALL their health care costs paid for by their employer and refuse to share the burden, like most of us have to do.

I imagine nobody wants to start paying for something they've been getting for free. Wouldn't want to give it up without a fight. Seems like a natural reaction. But eventually they'll join the rest of us and start paying on their own.

I held my hand in a thumbs down position as I passed them. I wasn't aggressive or anything, just thought I'd give my feedback (which would have been a thumbs up if I was more supportive of the cause). The dude gave me some one fingered feedback of his own.

So the strikers can show their displeasure with a situation by picketing and confronting those who chose to work or patronize at the gates/doors of many Verizon business's, yet someone shows their displeasure with the picketers and you are okay with them getting nasty? It is no wonder that union support is waning.

You know why do people have to be displeased with workers when they fight for there jobs and benifits, I'm not a Union member but at least they don't lay down and do nothing about what was there to begin with, maybe they won't win and have to pay for benefits like most people have to, but at least they are fighting for their beliefs, just like in the 60's and 70's the hippies march to get out of Viet nam, people said they were wrong, were they HELL NO

Because when they make demands that are totally outside the norm, and that cost the company huge amounts of money, it's US as consumers that have to pay the cost for that through higher prices.
I'm not against people fighting for what they believe in or for their jobs, etc. What I am against is people fighting for things that only a small fraction of the workforce get, and pass on the cost of those benefits to us, as consumers.

By all means though, feel free to take a day or two off from your current job and go picket with them to show them your support if it makes you feel good about things.

What's outside the norm paying for benefits, until last year I always got my benefits paid for, until I took a new job and now I have to pay 12.00 a month for health Ins with dental, so see their are still good companys that help the employees, I guess you make alot of money, think how many single Moms work at verizon and have to suport their kids because dead beat dads don't send money, so because of your beliefs they should be put in a bigger hole to support their kids, all I have to say is SHAME ON THE PEOPLE WHO DON"T CARE, remember what goes around comes around

The execs need more money for themselves! I'm on the fence. Corporations can be a-holes too -- that's why unions were started and why we have paid vacations, etc. But, unions need to stop protecting the lazy and incompetent in their ranks as well. Conversely, I'm sure Vz could pay everyone's health care 100% (some places still do), but their job is to pay you the least amount they can to maximize profits for shareholders. I do think that unions aren't really necessary anymore because govt regulation has taken care of most of the issues of why unions were created to begin with. Everything will always be part of a big cycle, just like politics, taxes, yadda yadda.

He was using one of his hands to hold a sign. And he could have simply given me back a thumbs up rather than an obscene gesture. I wasn't vulgar towards him.

They're standing there trying to attract attention. It's not all going to be positive attention.

I'm not all that familiar with the Verizon strike situation, so I just read a quick news article. One quote stood out to me:

"As the strike continues, Verizon customers from Massachusetts to Washington, D.C., who need their landlines fixed, will have to wait for fill-in workers to come to their rescue."

So it seems Verizon can replace these striking workers fairly easily. A union can only really work when the workers can't be easily replaced because of a unique skill set. If I'm Verizon, I'd just fire them all and hire back 45,000 unemployed people who would probably be happy to work for whatever I'm offering. Unless of course the union has some "you can't fire us" clause... but I don't know why a company would ever sign one of those.

So you are buying the company line that this is impacting what you pay (and are you expecting a discount if the strikers don't get what they want) ? Are you equally upset with the large executive salaries/bonuses which also impact what you pay ? I just can't work up much ire for working stiffs who are trying to get by when there are runaway salaries/benefits at the top of so many of these corporations.

So Sasquatch, if you are asked tomorrow to take a significant cut in pay, you are going to just accept that on the basis that your company tells you that the Abominable Snowman is prepared to do your job under the conditions that the company is now demanding ?
