Don't have any experience with it myself, but I asked a coworker who commutes from Poolesville, MD to Reston. She said that because you should find yourself going against traffic on 7, Whites Ferry and MD-28 would likely be fastest.

I go from Broadlands to Rockville town square. The fastest for me is Greenway/toll road to 495 to 270. But I get to drive my hybrid in the HOV on the toll road and that really cuts down on my time. Getting there is in the AM is not bad except for the construction at the toll road ramp to 495@Tysons. Once I get on 495 it is usually fast. But coming back 495 often gets jammed up.

I commute to Rockville and have done so for almost 2 years from Broadlands. I have actually taken both 267 to 495 and 15 to 28. I have found that taking 15 to 28 poses a problem as you can get behind some very slow traffic. It typically always takes about an 1 and 20 minutes. The morning commute if I don't take the greenway when taking 267 to 495 can take a bit longer in the morning than the evening. I always take the Greenway home in the evening.

Therefore I normally take 267 to 495 both ways. That being said when there are accidents with cause a lot of traffic I have found short cuts to combat it. You can take River rd. off of Montrose and or Falls Rd. off ot 270 to come out further down 495 if the spur is backed up badly. Good luck with your commute!

I'm going to revive this thread and ask another question. I have to be in Rockville (Key West Ave.) at 8:45 on Wednesday morning. I'll take 257/495/270. What is the best time for me to leave? Thanks!

if you are not going to use carpool/HOV lane, then I would say leave sometime around 7:30. You might reach 15 min earlier but it is better to keep that much buffer time for you if your appointment time is very important.

I haven't commuted to Rockville thankfully since April due to a job change closer to Ashburn. I would say it will take you at least an hour, that is if there are no accidents though. It is sometimes hard to tell whether 267 will be backed up or not...sometimes it's backed up the whole way to Herndon and other days it's not. I would say leave at least an hour and a half to get there in case of any accidents or traffic. Typically 267 is the worst problem and the toll plaza in Tyson's to get to the ramp onto 495. Somtesim 495 is a little congested but typically when you hit 270 there is no traffic on it. Good luck!

Thanks! Luckily I will be able to take HOV on 267. Think I'll leave between 7 & 7:15.

that should be sufficient. If you havent driven that way of late, do be aware that the backups to take the ramp from 267 to 495 N tend to form quite early.. you want to watch for the lanes/lane markings as soon as you head out the tool booths, and make sure you are in the correct lane.

Thanks for all the advice. I left at 7:15 and got to my appointment at 8:20. The worst traffic was the toll road from Reston Parkway to the toll plaza.

I commute over to Lanham from Ashburn, and I have found that Google Maps with Traffic layer is very accurate and can help you predict what the drive is going to be like.
