I was amazed to see that there is, yet another, Harris Teeter going up in those new Moorefield Apartments....I dont understand how / why they do it.

Anybody know what else will be going in there?

    • Nail Salon
    • Peking Cafe
    • Yamasusi Resturant
    • Crystal Brite Cleaners

The density of Harris Teeter locations in our area is so high that the stores must be cannibalizing each other for sales. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Several years back, Harris Teeter announced they would be moving aggressively into Loudoun County.
We now see the results. Grocery stores are a very cut throat business. Stores will open up and lose money for years to keep out the competition.
On average, one store will support 1800-2000 rooftops.

I am not sure how all these HTs stay in business. Whenever I shop at the Broadlands Marketplace location, they never seem that busy. Instead of another HT, a Trader Joe's would have been nice.

Funny you mention that, I sent an email a few years ago to Trader Joe's asking if they plan to open one in this area or Leesburg, they responded that the area was too sparsely populated, and would need to be built up some more. I think I'll send another letter, maybe we are now?

I read somewhere recently (past 6 months) that TJ's is not that interested in Ashburn mainly due to our demographics. Too many families. They believe their appeal is more to singles or married/both working no kids who want convenience/gourmet/etc.

Boo hoo, this is not good! It's funny logic really. Is that a narrow view of their target market or what!

Relying entirely on demographics to define market strategy clearly might not be the best way to go here. Have they no idea about the grassroots yearning for a TJ's out here! They'd make a killing! I mean how many of us actually go to Reston just to got to TJs? I do and I spend more than I ever intended to when I get there!

As tempting as it is to jump on the "too many Teeters" bandwagon, I love me some Teeter! It is like a mini-Wegmans. Almost.

Up in New England, we are forced to overpay at a hideous chain called Stop & Shop (they own Giant). They are pretty much the only show in town up in many parts of NE. So, to come here and see all this competition and choices for groceries is a very welcome thing. Build em!

If you mean Waxpool/Shellhorn/Ashburn Village Blvd, those are going to be apartments.

Interesting that TJ's feels families aren't their thing... I guess I will just turn to wishing for Whole Foods then!

I'd much rather have a Whole Foods, than a TJ's.

me too! I think they may take the same stance, unless they want to compete with wegmans.
