Okay, so my son and I showed up late. It was not unexpected that we would be too late to find any eggs. However, it was really disappointing to realize that we did not get any eggs not because a lot of kids showed up and found them all, but because a few kids had gathered shopping bags full of eggs.

Seriously, what is wrong with parents that would allow their children to get whole shopping bags full of eggs thus limiting the number of kids who could get any. This is plain selfish and inconsiderate.

To top if off, Peter Cottontail was supposed to be at the park until 12:30. Apparently, he decided to leave at noon. So, we missed him too. I really do hope that we are not paying him for the full time.

I really hope that when this is planned for next year there is a limit set on the number of eggs that a kid can walk away with and that the main character of the event remain for the full time advertised.

On the positive side, I get a great opportunity to teach my son about selfishness and why it is wrong as well as about responsibility and meeting your commitments and promises.

Thanks to all the volunteers that worked so hard on making the Egg Hunt so much fun! We really enjoyed it and great job getting it started on time! 2 year olds don't like to wait! I volunteered at the hunt a few years ago and I know everyone is a critic but I really appreciate your time and energy! Maybe qzpmal can volunteer and run it next year!

    Hello,

Would like to chime in and say THANK YOU to the committee for another nice job on the Egg Hunt event. Our family enjoyed. :)

Sorry to hear it was not a good experience for qzpmal, but perhaps another lesson his/her son can take away from this experience is about the importance of punctuality? We have lived in this neighborhood for 8 years and have attended each year and as many people would probably guess the actual gathering of the eggs (at most egg hunts?) is done in a matter of minutes!

I'd say comparing this year to past years, it seemed like a lower participation so perhaps the reason many of the children may have had more eggs than previous years? though I would definitely not say we had a "shopping bag" full.

The event was posted to begin with the bunny parade from the Community Center at 11am. From qzpmal's post, it appears they did not arrive until after NOON? Did you really expect that there would still be any eggs in the grass for picking up after one hour? Or do you think that children should wait at the park and share some of their eggs with those who arrive late? Yes, that would be a nice gesture (and in fact my daughter did give a few of her eggs away to a younger girl who did not have as many). However, I do not think it is reasonable to expect, nor do i think anyone should jump to conclusions and call the on-time families selfish or inconsiderate.

Maybe one solution would be if the bunny would have a reserve bin of eggs to hand out a few to children who were unable to make it on time to do the hunt and hand out during the picture with the bunny time?

We arrived at Hillside Park about 10:50am, waited for the bunny and parade of kids which started at 11am. Then the actual gathering of the eggs did not start until several minutes after 11am. They first did the small children (5 under 5) and then afterwards the bunny came over to start the 5-8 year old group. I think there was even an ongoing scavenger hunt type activity for children over 8?

As for the bunny leaving early, I am not sure about that part as we left the event around 11:45. My only guess is that perhaps due to lower than expected participation maybe they did not think it was necessary to stay as long? There really were not tons of people there this year compared to some of the past years. If it was posted somewhere that he was going to stay until 12:30pm, I do feel bad for qzpmal if they were hoping to catch him. Personally, the timing of the event seemed adequate. Plenty of time to do the bunny parade, the egg hunt, wait in a very short/fast moving line to get a photo with the bunny, chat with friends, and play on the playground and leave - all before 11:45am.

Sorry for qzpmal's experience and do hope it will be a happier one next time. Thank you again to the committee for your efforts. A few photos attached.

And later on, people eat the pig. I don't think that's a sound metaphor.

I wasn't there but it sounds like the hunt was a free for all. The number of eggs collected should be limited. It's only fair and considerate to the children who are younger, slower, and/or have difficulty processing information. If there were fewer children at this year's event than in years past, maybe this is reason for less participation.

I have never participated in this and do not know the details but most Easter Egg hunts I have seen have a separate "hunt" for the little kids, one that can be controlled easily with a set amount of guaranteed "prizes". Does not help if you are late but perhaps could have been easier for managing the experience etc.

Just an idea for the future...

I have a 3-yr-old who is basically the opposite of pushy and would back off of any competition for eggs, and a 6-yr-old who is usually the same. They both attended and enjoyed this year's egg hunt and got what they (and I) considered plenty of eggs (probably 8-12 each?). While it was "free-for-all" to some extent, that's the nature of an egg hunt.

Sure, some kids were pushier than others and got more eggs than others, but I have seen some pretty bad behavior at egg hunts in the past and didn't see any of that at this one. From what we saw, the majority of kids and adults alike were very considerate and there were plenty of eggs for everyone to get a fair share.

Our feeling was they the event was well-organized and very enjoyable, and our thanks go out to everyone who worked to make it happen.

Wow people on here are a little tough. Why is it so inflammatory that someone suggested an egg limit so everyone gets a chance. OR... you could advertise the event as "Egg hunt starts at X time and eggs are taken on a first come basis."
The way I see it is that an event was advertised as having a start and end time and that if you show up during those times then you should be able to participate.

I agree with you ChrisL. Arriving within the parameters should have guaranteed some participation. But hey, too bad if your kid was late! At least my kid had fun and found a bunch of easter eggs. Na nany boo boo. Get the picture?

I'm not in disagreement... just saying that next year. Let's make the rules clear.

Thank you for all those that organized the event this year. Just a suggestion for the future...perhaps filling more eggs with non-food items to account for children with food allergies.

I'd like to add that we've only gone to the Egg Hunt one time in 7 years, and even back then it was a bit of mayhem. That said, the hostess of the egg hunt we do attend each year had to make a request for parents to bring a REASONABLY sized basket in which to collect eggs. Again, the whole shopping bag thing is either lazy or selfish or both. One would expect any kid to want to fill it full, which is what was described. So perhaps the shopping bags are the problem??? It sounds to me like the organizers did a fine job.

I'm a little late posting to the comments on the board but better late than never. I coordinated the event this year as the normal chairperson for the event was out of town. In response to the complaint regarding the event let me say this. I was out at the park at 7:30 AM the morning of the event to set up and rope off the areas. I posted the signs and loaded and unloaded 2500 eggs. I had two volunteers who are friends that came later to help lay the eggs out for the kids and another friend who VOLUNTEERED to be the Easter bunny. After all the eggs had been distributed the Easter bunny sat for 45 minutes while kids and families got their pictures. We only left after everyone had an opportunity to get a picture. There was a gentleman at the park with two children who very loudly complained about how the bunny left early. Within earshot I might add to be sure I overheard. Had you been polite enough to ask me directly I would have told you I had more than enough eggs left over to give your children. Had you not been so rude and indignant I might have also told you to meet at the community center where the bunny was getting back into street clothes. He would have met with your children. I had no intention of making a sixteen year old volunteer stand at the park for an additional thirty minutes when the crowd had clearly dissipated on the off chance that someone else might show up. In the future I think you should be more appreciative of the events the community offers and respect the VOLUNTEERS that make it possible. We all have families and commitments that we set aside momentarily to make our community better. I encourage you sir to show us how a real event should be run and volunteer to chair a committee.

Are you kidding me? to me, your post makes it sound like demand respect for your efforts. If you are in the volunteering business to receive accorlades and be univerally loved, it ain't gonna happen.

Maybe the original poster had "family commitments" and could not make it an sooner, maybe he just wanted to avoid the rush at the beginning of the event. That is why I also think that you should adhere to the posted hours.

And before you reply in kind to my post about volunteering, I have been serving for almost 7 years on an HOA committee myself.

And FWIW, qzpmal and his wife have done a SIGNIFICANT amount of volunteering for the Southern Walk portion of our community.

And yes, I sincerely thank you for volunteering.
