We got our son the Strider model on his third birthday and by day two he was already riding down slight hills on his own. He'll be four in August and is completely comfortable balancing. The only disadvantage is that it doesn't have breaks so he has worn out a couple of pairs of Crocs dragging his feet. We actually got him a regular bike with training wheels to start transitioning him and he doesn't like it because of the training wheels getting in the way so need to take them off to see if that helps.

We got our son one for his 2nd birthday. Now 2.5, he zips around the whole neighborhood on that thing - best purchase so far. We haven't tried to put him on a bike with pedals yet since he's just getting the hang of pedaling, but his balance is already there.

Both our kids used normal bikes with training wheels, but I put the training wheels up to the highest so it would be rickety and teach them to balance (not sure why people put the training wheels level with the main rear wheel)... my son and daughter took them off when they were 2.5 and 3 ... took about 10 minutes of running around spotting them and they were fine... hardest part is to teach how to balance from a stop. So I guess it was a bit similar to a coaster bike.

It's a parental right of passage to have to run and chase a wobbly bike. It is a great joy when all of the sudden that bike takes off and you can't keep up with it. I have vivid memories of that.

Not sure I'd reinvent that experience with a mechanical device. Just my two cents.

I agree with you, I've seen several of my nieces and nephews learn to ride their first "big kid" bike and it was great to see the faces of the children as they learn to ride.. It was really cool to see the faces of the parents.

Yea balance bikes work great...and the kids really learn fast. And it gives the kids a chance to really learn balance over a period of weeks so their skills are great when it comes time to pedal.
