I forgot to lock my car last week one night and my watch was gone the next morning. It was last Thursday. Do you guys think this is probably teens? The reason I ask is, my 20 y.o. daughter works untill 2 am some nights. It really worries me that she might come home and surprise an adult criminal in the act. This type of crime seems to be a regular occurence in our neighborhood now. I guess we're not in Kansas anymore.

its a regular occurrence everywhere. I recall a news story from NJ maybe where the police chief wanted to make it a crime if you did not lock your car at night because they were spending so much time and effort responding to this type of incident.

I'm guilty too. Left my car unlocked, they took some change, left the gps. According to the sheriff's deputy that was obligated to come by (we said we just wanted to report it but they insisted to send someone over), often it is a organized group of folks, they are only looking for money (fencing stuff is getting hard and risky), its not just bored local teens. They often will strike on rainy nights (or even snow) as it muffles sound and helps wash away fingerprints.

Sorry. We too have experienced some minor things over our 12 years here. At least it is a lot better than it was 25 years ago when we were kids.

There were a lot of houses in the upper part of SW hit Saturday night. Everyone that I talked to, the cars were unlocked, including mine. They emptied my glovebox but found nothing of value. Our other car in the driveway was locked and not tampered with. Glad to see my online report made its way through the system though I never have talked to an officer.

We're on the Crime Report too, unlocked car, change, smartag and revo sunglasses. We have provided video to loco sherrif office. Our son heard noise outside a little past 11p. Will prosecute to prove a point if we're lucky enough to have the perps caught. Happy to test the Castle Law too if the opportunity presents itself again.

If you car was rummaged through and you haven't filed a police report, you can do it on-line.
    http://sheriff.loudoun.gov/index.aspx?NID=213

And if you live on a street that was hit, you might want to ask your neighbors (left/right & across the street) to review their security footage. This footage may help the Sheriff's department.

And how many of these cars had a garage door opener clipped to the visor? Just scary how easily entry to the home could be.

Here is a good read regarding security cameras and your personal decision as to wether it is a wise investment.

    http://www.techprosecurity.com/secu...o-home-security-cameras-really-prevent-crime/

Simple steps a homeowners can take would be to place a sign or two on your property saying that your property is under surveillance. You could even take it a step further and place dummy cameras so that it appears you have a system.

Beyond that many homeowners choose the cheapie Costco $300 camera specials and install them as a DIY project. Beyond that you could hire a guy like me to install a more durable system which is upwards of $1500 for equipment an install.

Aside from the deterrent factor, if your property is targeted you have evidence to share with the authorities and your neighbors. I've also seen situations where cameras from one house was able to capture evidence of a crime at a neighboring house.

I spoke to the folks at the Sheriff's Department. They were very accomodating and have increased patrols in our area. We have to do our part as well by taking the opportunity away. We had a leap pad stolen out of our unlocked car..so its partly on us.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Department also has deputies that will come and assess your home for vulnerabilities if you are interested.

You can get a free home security assessment from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office by contacting Maj. John Fraga at john.fraga@loudoun.gov .

Just saw this today, if anyone is in the market for a cheap camera security system: http://www.woot.com/plus/lights-camera-jail-1

Of course, standard disclaimers apply... I am not endorsing any of these products, just passing along info :)

What I've determined is that most of the events occur around 3AM, give or take a half hour. There does not seem to be a preferred day. One exception around midnight was two young women checking for unlocked car doors about half a year ago.

Perhaps 3AM is preferred as not too many people are out: people getting home late maybe up until 2AM and early shift nurses etc then around 4AM. I imagine even novice thieves realize this. Search under "car hopping" for further info.

I maintain a small email list (mostly my neighbors) for late night events. Our surveillance system uses "analytics" that sends me email photos of any late night activity in a certain time window. It is convenient in that it takes only a few seconds to review events.

Until people start locking their car doors, no doubt others will remove items from inside them. Sheriff patrols are usually short lived, which is fair since the car door checking does not seem to stay concentrated very long in an area. FWIW, I have only seen our patrol (NHS) perhaps twice over several years.

If you want to get a feel for the number and type of incidents, the link is http://sheriff.loudoun.gov/Archive.aspx?AMID=37
It is easy to see that is unusual for this area. The non-emergency number is 703-777-1021 (good to have in your cell phone).

Interestingly, after making the post about not seeing NHSS driving around much the system captured a clip of them last night in the "magic" time window. The engineer in me imagines that all the cars are outfitted with GPS trackers and monitored to verify they are doing patrols - the reality is unknown however.

At any rate, it appears someone is reading this forum and making adjustments. :2thumbs:

Last night my car, locked and in the driveway, had the magnets removed from the back of it. It's nothing valuable, but they were personal to me. So, if anyway happens to see to a triangle Sugarloaf Mountain (blue with a white peak), 26.2 oval, and Ashburn Inline Hockey oval, please let me know. I live on Highview Trail.

Just a thought, but have you been through a car wash recently? I also had magnets on my car and they disappeared and I truly thought they were stolen. I was able to replace and then, gone again....what the heck. It finally dawned on me....they were disappearing after I went through the car wash.......

If you want to put in cheap cams, look at the Q-See HD cams from Costco. These are re-branded Dahua 1.3MP mini bullets. You won't find much better for the price (most of those packaged deals have pretty bad cameras).

    http://www.costco.com/Q-See-High-Definition-720p-2-Pack-IP-Cameras.product.100003461.html

You can get 4 with a NVR as well.

    http://www.costco.com/Q-See-4-Chann...d-4-HD-720p-IP-Cameras.product.100003211.html

You can read a detailed review on the cameras here:
