I agree. People are going to give the board members their emotional appeal, which is completely understandable and expected, but they need to back it up with a plan. Just saying "don't do" something isn't going to be enough.

So true, but it's put us in the position we're in now. I guess that's life in growing suburbia.

So, I am in 30.1 and hoping someone could clear somethings up. First, I have a daughter going to Briar Woods next year. Would she switch to the new Broad Run? Second, I have a daughter at Hillside, would she move to Dominion Trail?

I must say, telling people that their kids can't walk across the street to school, but instead need to get on a bus for 30 minutes seems silly.

Your daughter at Briar Woods will still be going to Briar Woods next year. The year after that is in question (for all of us). The staff base plan has her slated to move to Broad Run, but the community is engaged in not letting that happen.

Your daughter at Hillside is staying at Hillside. We're hoping that is a permanent thing. Those boundaries were decided last fall. The next ES in our area is not scheduled to open until 2016.

    Hope that helps!

Was watching the Board of Supervisors meeting on TV this afternoon. During the comment period, there were a handful of Brambletonians talking about the proposed school boundaries and all launched "pleas for help" at the supervisors around the proposed zoning by way of the school board budget.

Most comments spoke to the "fiscal irresponsibility" (definitely the phrase of the day) of busing Brambleton students out of the neighborhood, not approving walk zones within 1.5 miles around Briar Woods and the general theme that Briar Woods was built for the Brambleton neighborhood.

Cliff K was there commenting about the budget so he may have additional info. Liked your comments by the way, Cliff!

Some folks have the misconception that the board of supervisors has control over how the schools spend their money. Fact is, the supervisors allocate a block of cash, and the school system spends it as the school system sees fit. Trying to pressure the supervisors into pressuring the school board on a specific expenditure simply doesn't work.

Based on the consistent message, they sure think so. Either way, was interesting to hear Brambleton's messaging.

Folks, things are coming down to the wire regarding this issue. There are two School Board meetings left:

    • Monday, April 15th @ 6:30 pm Staff Briefing & School Board Attendance Zone Public Hearing – LCPS Administrative Building
    • Tuesday, April 23rd @ 6:30 pm School Board Adoption of Secondary School Attendance Zones – LCPS Administrative Building
The meeting on the 23rd is the final vote - Only 2 weeks away!

If you haven't gotten involved yet, want more information and/or want to help, please join the Keep Broadlands Together Facebook group located here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/keepbroadlandstogether/

This group is run by Broadlands residents and has become the central discussion area surrounding the school boundaries and how Broadlands could be affected. Residents are also using this space to discuss strategy, upcoming meetings, inform neighbors, etc. If you haven't already, I urge you to join the group and get involved NOW. With 2 weeks left before the final vote, there's not much time left. The group has over 400 members, but more members means more people involved!

Please please please pass the word on to attend tonight's meeting. The latest plan creates an island out of Broadlands and ships all of us through Briar Woods neighborhoods on order to get to high school 6 in Loudoun Valley Estates. There are 3 schools closer to us now.

If you can't make the meeting, than at least email to and/or post on all of the school board members facebook pages with your concerns. If we are apathetic, we will need to live with th consequences.

The middle school numbers in the Turgeon plan are unacceptable.

If we read Plan 12 and the various comments correctly, it appears to offer long-term stability for established communities, like Broadlands.

We need long-term solutions that encourage stability for communities that are built-out and allow other areas like Brambleton to continue to expand and once that community is built-out, finalize additional zoning alignments for those areas.

Someone wrote the following on the Brambleton message board and I agree with the sentiment. Change is difficult for everyone but change can bring opportunity. Change does not mean our children will receive a bad education, although they may meet new friends along the way. We have much to be thankful for living in one of the wealthiest counties in the U.S.
