I was surprised at the number of houses in my neighborhood with un-shoveled sidewalks. I guess if they don't walk on their sidewalk they don't notice. Some people may be unable to shovel their own walkways, some people may be out of town, some people don't have the idea occur to them, some just wait for it to melt, and some are just lazy. I went to a friend's house last Friday for a Girl Scout meeting and their driveway, walkway, and porch had not been shoveled. The mom knew people were coming over but it still wasn't done. She blamed her husband for not doing it and said it was his job. Because she's my friend and I can get away with it, I gave her a hard time. :kungfu: But I'm sure many people are the same way. PS: if you have a dog and walk it outside you should totally shovel your sidewalk, duh.

What if you are on vacation? Is that an excuse? What if your job has you traveling 2 weeks every month? Is that an excuse?

HOW DARE YOU BE GONE when it snows! What about the children walking to school?! You know, the ones who run, jump, slide for hours on end in the white stuff... :banana:BUT, when it is time to walk to school, it is all-of-a-sudden, DANGEROUS!

Honestly, I am not 100% sure but I do not think any excuse is acceptable in the eyes of the law. If you are not home, you should make arrangements to have the walk cleared. You should ask one of your neighbors (kids) to be kind and shovel for you. Better yet, ask one of your neighbors would would most likely complain that you didn't shovel.

Well, you are probably correct. However, being a person that does travel 2 weeks of every month, shoveling my sidewalk while I am away working in Asia is a real low priority to me. Also, the couple times in the past 14 years the where I have been away when it snowed has not garnered me any indignation or wrath of my neighbors like the rantings of the guy above. My neighbors seem to understand and we treat each other with civility. I make up for it in other ways. All I can say is that I am glad I don't live anywhere near the ranter. Yikes!

I just found out that commercial properties including HOA walks are not under the same county regulations. I guess that is what makes Loudoun "business friendly".

You could make an arrangement with someone to plow the drive/walk if you are out of town. My son had a standing agreement with a few folks in townhouses that were away/unable to shovel their walk. If it snowed more than 2 inches, he went out and did it for them.

Same house - same neglect of upkeep. Their grass (to be honest it is more weeds than grass) is now knee high to an adult.
