Turn on your F*C#ING HEADLIGHTS - even during the day. You are basically invisible on all but the brightest sunny days.

Just trying to save you from crashing into us.

    Thanks.

ummmm..... maybe you should get your eyes checked, and while at the doctor maybe ask for a sedative or two.

A lot of the newer vehicles have an "auto" switch that allows the lights to turn on when the vehicle is started; I know mine does, so I keep them on all the time! :)

Also, a lot of them have running day lights!

I WISH I could tell you that it would help. For over a decade I drove BRIGHT yellow SUV (really, NO ONE had an excuse for not seeing it, unless truly or legally blind!) AND I ran my headlights during the day as well. I was cut off, or had near miss situations daily and sometimes multiple times a day! Now I drive a "boring" vehicle color, dark gray, and I forget to turn my lights on during the day more often than not (I have an auto on light system, so I get lazy...Sorry! HOWEVER, if there's even so much as a spritz of precipitation lights are ON!!! I don't understand people driving around without lights on in rain, snow or fog. That's just asking for trouble!!!). In the year-ish of owning this vehicle, I only need one hand to count the amount of near miss or cut off situations, definitely NOT the daily occurrence anymore (whew!).

So really, my long story here is to just say, I don't think it's color of car that truly matters here... Maybe try a polarized lens in your sunglasses?!?! :D

Well, there is a difference between "would help" and "solves the problem in all cases." Even if something doesn't solve the problem in all cases, if it would help, it may be worth doing.

I sometimes ride a two-wheeler. We have our headlights on at all times. Doesn't stop us from being missed, but it can't hurt. So, I do the same thing with my four-wheeler: headlights on, all the time. Saves me the trouble of having to remember when to turn them on or off, and, just maybe, reduces risk.

I think the general displeasure of Big Dogs initial post is the tone of the email. He went on a ridiculous rant, like a 5 year old, because he is unable to see cars in daylight. Making demands on anyone who drives a black, gray, or tan car (65% of all vehicles) to better suit him. This guy is obviously a megalomaniac.

Bottom line; if you cant see a black car driving down the road in broad daylight the problem is not the driver of the car, the problem is you. Honestly you should not be driving a motor vehicle if you lack the eyesight necessary to distinguish a shinny black moving car and a dull stationary asphalt road.

Keep you rants to yourself from now on.

I'm not ready to make a diagnosis on the basis of a single anonymous post, Kevin, though I do get your point.

Rants aside, however, there's a legitimate question to be asked about what's best for all of us who share the road. Sure, we all need to be on the look-out for other cars, but anything we can easily do to help each other see us isn't a lot to ask.

Virginia law states that if your windshield wipers are on, you must turn on your headlights too. Not many people know about it.

Good question. The answer is, "no." Here's the actual law, excerpted from the Code of Virginia:

Thanks Stevens. My reply was gonna be:
You only need to turn on ONE of your headlights!

I am not saying that its not a good idea to have your lights on during all times while using a motor vehicle. I have daytime running lights on my car, and I think most cars on the road has the same standard feature. The problem is the way he went about his post.

In all honesty though someone who can not see tan, black, or grey cars during the day is the problem, not the person who forgot, or does not want to turn on his/her lights. His angry outburst was ridiculous, and he really should go see an eye doctor to ensure he is wearing some sort of vision correction (contact/glasses) while driving. Talk about unsafe, its unsafe to drive our roads knowing that you have compromised vision and are only able to clearly see 40% of the cars on the road.

That came through. Still a good question, though. See the thread on HOA letters over mildew for examples of what happens when people think rules are written with blinders on.
