Virginia’s photo ID law is in effect. To vote, you will need one of the following forms of photo identification:
    1. Virginia Driver’s License or other photo ID issued by Virginia
    2. United States Passport
    3. Any photo ID issued by the United States government
    4. Student ID that has a photograph and that was issued by any institution of higher learning in Virginia
    5. Employee identification card that has a photograph and that was issued by the employer in the ordinary course of business
A few important things to remember:
    • Your address on your photo ID does not have to match the address on your voter registration.
    • You may use an expired ID so long as you still reasonably resemble the picture and it has not expired more than twelve (12) months before the election.

I interact with many elderly residents of Loudoun County, some staunchly Republican, others devoutly Democrat; all deserve to have their voices heard. Many don't have a valid driver's license or passport, aren't employed, don't travel anymore, and aren't students. They've legally voted for years, yet now have to either go to the registrar's office to get a photo ID or wait for the registrar to come to them (which thankfully the Loudoun County registrar has done, kudos to her). Hopefully they are aware of the new requirements and were able to take advantage of the visits the registrar made to many senior centers and assisted living facilities. I'm sure some will be unable or unwilling to cast their vote tomorrow, and I find it sad that their disenfranchisement is seen as inevitable or somehow their fault because the rules have changed.

Thanks for the information, KTdid! I hope it helps to get people out to vote.

Provisional Ballot Process in Loudoun County for Voters Who Arrive Without Identification

A voter who arrives at the polling place without an acceptable form of photo identification will be given the opportunity to vote a provisional ballot. After completing the provisional ballot, the individual voting will be given written instructions from the election officials on how to submit a copy of his/her identification so that his/her vote can be counted.

A voter will have until noon on the Friday following the election to deliver a copy of the identification to the local electoral board. Voters may submit a copy of their ID via fax, email, in-person submission, or through USPS or commercial delivery service. Please note that the copy of the ID must be delivered to the electoral board by noon on Friday, or the provisional ballot cannot be counted. A Friday postmark will not be sufficient if the copy of the ID is not delivered to the electoral board by noon on Friday.

The written notice given to the voter will provide the necessary information, including email, fax, and address of where the ID should be delivered.

Also by noon on Friday following the election, the voter may appear in-person in the office of the general registrar, in the locality in which the provisional ballot was cast, and apply for a Virginia Voter Photo ID Card. At the completion of the application process, the voter may request a Temporary Identification Document. This document may be provided to the electoral board to suffice the identification requirement

why is ANYONE walking around without valid ID? especially the elderly - what if they have a health issuethat leaves them unconcious? what do you use to pick up perscriptions and see doctors? maybe i'm in the dark as a military brat- my parents always have a photo ID on them.

Medicare and Medicaid cards are not photo ID's. My insurance card doesn't have my photo on it, yet I can get my prescriptions and see doctors with it.

Valid ID and photo ID are two separate things.

Do I need to start taking a photo ID every time I walk my dog around the block? Why shouldn't I be able to walk around without an ID on me?

If you're 80, and your driver's license has expired because you don't drive any more, why bother with going down to the DMV and getting a photo ID? You have an insurance card, you have an ATM card and a checking account to take care of your daily needs. You don't drink, and even if you did you're 80 years old and nobody asks for an ID. You don't travel because it's a pain in the butt. You can't vote now, though, even though you're a legal voter because you either can't get to the registrar's office or you have no one to take you there (there's only one for the whole county) and you have no way to get to one of the outreach efforts that the registrar has arranged(or you don't know about them).

It seems to me we're saying that if you don't have a "valid" photo ID and can't get one easily, your vote doesn't count, even if you've legally voted in the past and are a registered voter.

If the state is going to require all registered voters to have a valid photo ID to vote, then the state should reach out to each and every registered voter to make sure they get the required photo ID that enables them to vote. Most voters may already have that ID, and that's fantastic, but for those who don't have it and may not even know they need it, then there should be a concerted effort on the part of the governing body who changes the laws to make sure that all legally registered voters are able to vote.

Agree, it's putting the cart before the horse.

I think the missing component in this debate is empathy and understanding privilege systems. There's a large population of people that live day to day their entire lives without a government issued ID card. To feign surprise that something as simple as obtaining an ID would cause hardship is simplistic. Read the history of voter suppression.

One really can't understand a person's experience until you 'walk a mile in their shoes.'

Here's one... because you need one to vote!

People need a reason? well now you have one. To go along with all kinds of other scenarios.

'Heritage Foundation' : 2.8 million people are registered in 2 or more states.
    1.8 million voters are dead.

You constantly mention "the elderly" and I get it for an EXTREMELY small %. Most elderly people I know are pretty "with it" these days and if one wants to vote bad enough, THEY will do what is required.

"Ask not what the Government can do for you..."

So it's ok to disenfranchise voters if it's only a small percentage of them? "Sorry, you can't vote anymore, but that's fine really, because your vote wouldn't matter anyway."

    A rebuttal to the Heritage Foundation's claim of voter fraud;

Plus, I didn't know that registered voters' deaths = voter fraud. Amazing!

What I am saying is, if one wants to vote, follow the rules.

Right, and if the rules get changed midstream and it's too difficult for you to comply, tough luck.
