Too difficult or just political excuses?

Some people struggle to pay their taxes every year but they still have to comply. ;)

Then why every election cycle are there reported irregularities throughout the country?

IMO, a citizens right to vote is extremely important and the process should be IRONCLAD so that only US citizens actually vote... ONCE! :D

I find it so humorous that we think that these disenfranchised people have the ability to get up and go vote but do not have the ability to go to the DMV and get an ID.

If you are elderly and used to have a drivers license, you can go to the DMV and get an ID. This is not complicated stuff here but it does mean you have to get up and do it.

If you don't care enough about voting to go to DMV and get your updated/new ID then I don't have a lot of compassion for you.

My polling place is about 2 blocks away, easy enough for me to walk there. The closest DMV is about 10 miles away, and so is the registrar's office. Some people do care, but can't get to the DMV or the one registrar's office per county (open only during business hours BTW, M-F). Why isn't there a convenient (within walking distance) place to get my free official voter's photo ID, just as there is generally a convenient place to cast my vote?

Was going to say something similar fido. Maybe "the elderly" can only leave their residence once every election cycle?

I live .09 miles from my polling place, would you want "the elderly" to walk that far?!?!

Maybe these voters live in an area that includes places close to them where they can shop, eat, socialize and vote easily.

Easier for them to walk that distance than the distance to the DMV

If politicians can bus people to the polls, they can bus people to the DMV too.

I don't mind a bit of burden once every few years if it improves the integrity of the system.

People embrace change all the time - no reason not to now. The standards being applied are not too high for people, they are a burden for the transition period. But instead of saying "how do we reduce the burden" people say "zOMG you can't do that! What about my lost aunt lucie who lives in a cave 364 days a year... you can't disenfranchise ANYONE!" - nevermind they aren't nearly as passionate about integrity.

I think it's very moral to be passionate and to stand up for people who may be disenfranchised by the change in rules that is taking place right now. And, on the contrary, the standards being applied are too high for some people. Rather than making it easier for legal voters to cast their vote, Virginia has made it harder for those who can't get the required photo ID. I would have been much more complacent about this if Virginia had reached out to all registered voters and made it easy for them to get the required photo ID. The Loudoun County registrar at least made an attempt to supply registered voters with the requisite ID, but did all Virginia registrars do that? Probably not, since they got a miniscule budget to deal with the new law.

Also, photo ID? How does that realistically combat voter fraud? I don't look anything like the photo on my driver's license, different hair color, length and I wear glasses now. If we're truly trying to combat in person voter fraud (somebody voting as another person) and not just trying to make it harder for people to vote, then we should be using fingerprints or retinal scans or some other type of identification that isn't so easy to circumvent.
