Hi i don't know if anyone else is having an issue with Verizon but I got hooked up yesterday and have been having issues, was trying to trouble shoot so bypassed the hub and hooked directly to my laptop and went to Verizon's speed test page, this is what I got, 141 down and 299 up..... doesn't seem like a big improvement for all we've gone through, I got 95 up and 98 down with OB

Yikes...if that’s all we are gonna get...then why the promotion of 1Gig? Has anyone talked to Verizon about this as it doesn’t look like very much of an increase....did we get short changed? Hope not and hope that is just a glitch that they will work on.

For those that have the new Fios router installed and have attached their existing switch to it (for pre-wired connections), I'm curious to see how your wifi signal strength is working. Our panel is in a storage room in our basement, so it is not exactly in a good location for wifi devices in use on the 2nd floor of our house.

Our panel is also in a storage area in the basement. I have always had another router in a more central location of my house to extend the wifi range. This is connected to one of the wired locations in the house.

    With Verizon...
    - you can usually enter deals that offer a new extended commitment
    - when your promo ends, you usually just go back to the standard rate. Most promos I have seen have always been billed as standard rate, with a discount shown that has an expiration date. So get billed at $129.99, then see a -$40 discount good until 3/19 etc.
    - Ability to get a new promo rate while an existing customer is something I don't have a clear answer on what the criteria is. I've heard things like after X months of no promo, you can get a new promo. But promo shopping is a bit of mash up for them. They have online pricing, they have on the phone pricing, and they also have some degree of latitude to give discounts for shorter periods (6month or 12month discount, etc). For instance, I've called and haggled before and they simply shuffle things around with added discounts (like not paying for router, $10 discount per month, whatever). Or a conversation like 'we see you only have XYZ internet, can we upgrade you' and you say "sounds cool, but I don't want to pay more than I am now" -- and they rework things in a way to make it attractive to you.
    - ETF have never been an issue because you don't want to leave typically.. its just about what you want to spend vs what you are getting
    - Promos for included things can vary significantly online vs phone - shop online to know the baseline before you call

The best success I've had has usually been calling in once I know the costs and promos floating around as standard offers.. and make a judgement call based on what they offer.

Currently I'm off promo, and just haven't bothered to call in and try to find an alternative. But I like my monthly setup right now... no router fees, good internet, etc.

If Verizon is installing the ETHERNET version of the service (which is common now)... the best thing to do is use your own mesh network. Mesh networks like Orbi, Google, etc make the days of worrying about wifi at home a thing of the past.

I'm actually setup as a double nat due to having a coax feed, not ethernet, but honestly it doesn't impact me so I've not bothered to try to get my connection switched to ethernet where you have better options for bridging, etc.

For those with the technical questions, the swhoab.com site has the Fiber Solutions number down at the bottom,

After you have placed your order for service, please call the Fiber Solutions Center at 888.553.1555 for all technical or service related issues and questions.

Thanks for sharing your information, Flynnibus.

I usually don't take most of those offers seriously, as I see them all the time from the Wireless carriers. "Come in and get a free IPhone 34" and then in the fine print you see "with new line of service". Most people do upgrades and I haven't switched my carrier since 2003.

I'm seeing similar speeds (about 250 up/down using the google speed test tool) when plugged directly into the Verizon ONT. You are right, if this is the speed we'll be betting, the juice wasn't worth the squeeze.

My house setup has the panel in the basement, not in a storage room, but in a very small cabinet in the wall. Since I'm crunched for space in that cabinet, i've gone with the following setup: Wired 8 port gigabit router (non wifi) in the cabinet (i needed something very small to fit) which replaced my old switch which i used to distribute the openband connect to the patch panel. I'm using my old wireless router (which I previously had on the main level) and the verizon provided router to both act as wireless access points connected to wall Ethernet ports - one in the basement and one on the top level of the house. Both wifi access points are setup with the same SSID and are using the main router as the gateway/dhcp server. I've got good coverage throughout the house and am getting similar speeds as when plugged directly into the ONT. There may be a better way to set everything up, but this was easy and seems to be working well for me.

While connections are faster than OB, definitely haven't seen anything close to the 900/900 that VZ claims. Best i got was last night around 250/250 over a wired connection, on speedtest.net.

    Folks,

I got my FiOS installed today, I had the Internet, TV, and phone services installed took the tech about 2 hours to complete everything, he used the existing patch panel in my garage for everything and I am able to use my existing phone jacks tv coax and data ports (so happy about that)

As far as speeds you need to test on a line connection and make sure your computer is newer model and has a 1Gbps NIC to see the true speed - the best i've seen on WIFI is 300Mbps, I also plan on setting up a Mesh setup to get maximum performance via WIFI.

my old iMac late 2009 model has a 10/100/1000 NIC but it can not get more than 150Mbps throughput, my new macbook pro as you can see in the picture i've attached gets the "1Gbps" speeds!

Happy with Faster Internet: Hell Yes
Happy with Pricing scheme: HELL NO!!
    Happy about TV: Yes
    Happy about Phone: somewhat
    Overall Happy: Yes!

Can you share which TV package you chose? I have DirecTV and am considering the switch. And what is the equipment lease/rent prices for the DVR? And if you have Verison cell, I assume that the App will stream TV data free?

I went with the preferred HD package $54.99 with one HD DVR STB (rent is $24.00) - Preferred HD (255+ channels, 80+ in HD) I also have two apple TV that I can broadcast the from the smart phone app to them using the FiOS TV App, I might just cancel the HD DVR box and just broadcast the tv from my smart phone/table to my Apply TV's. I'll see how the DVR service works.

I see you have a Macbook try forcing the NIC to manually do 1000baseT and playing with your MTU size, I was able to get my old iMac to get 200Mbps U/D throughput by tweaking the MTU sizes, went from 100, to 150, and now 200 is the best i can get.

Thanks this is very helpful information. I have my installation tomorrow. I am prepared to upgrade my main computer if need be to leverage the high capacity data throughput.

Zeratul, I selected the highest tier channel package. I see from the channel lineup that there are several free premium channels. For the extra $10, I see great value. I also want to say that data streaming is free on VZW with the FiOS TV app.

    I'm quite excited.

I am skeptical about Verizon’s speed test site.
With the laptop plugged in directly into the Verizon Router with 3ft cat6 cable, I got a speed of about 350mb up and down. Verizon site shows 900mb plus up and down.

If you are using WiFi upgrading it gives major speed boost.

Anyone know if they are offering cable cards? I already have a tivo roamio and would rather just get the card.
