    ***Update June 7th***

A portion of Phase 4 is likely to be made available for service mid next week. Verizon is trying to get as many addresses ready and through its internal speed testing as it can and delivering what they can as soon as they can.

Please do not call for service until your street is made available and announced through the SWHOA. All information received from the Verizon PM is posted almost immediately.

When received, the announcement will be made here and on the SWHOAB.com website.
    _______________________________________________________

The Verizon Project Manager has informed the Southern Walk Board of Directors that construction still continues and the team is working through a pathway issue at the top of Ridgeway Drive, near Ayr Hill Ct and Highview Terrace. Since this is an area of high traffic, please be cautious as you approach this intersection on vehicle, bicycle, or on foot.

Verizon stated months ago that it would devote construction assets towards a mutual goal of completing all construction work by June 1st; however, weather, terrain, other extreme conditions have made this a challenge.

Splicing and final fiber placement will commence next week and there will be another update as soon as the Board receives word back from the Verizon PM with a better estimate as to when service will be ready for Phase 4 residents.

As has been shared by OpenBand, their internet and phone services will remain, until further notice, only their video platform is ceasing operations on June 1st. OpenBand has told the Board of Directors that their broadband platform is capable of streaming video services, so residents who need video services are encouraged to seek out streaming services from providers who sell these services.

The Board will post updates as soon as they are received.

The point is SWHOA exists for one reason, they have one job. And many of us are left with no video service and it looks like the prospect is at least a week before we find out when we will get it back. The additional assessments and time culminates in "their broadband platform is capable of streaming video services, so residents who need video services are encouraged to seek out streaming services from providers who sell these services"

The SWHOA only committed to provide us bulk Internet when they signed the agreement and the OB decision to end cable was never in their control. We have all been on our own for TV and since OB is still providing Internet (and maintaining it) it is hard to point any fault back to SWHOA.

In fact this decision by OB to end cable TV services on June 1 is saving me an average of $50 a month since I decided to go with a streaming Internet TV service starting on April 1. I will be ahead of the game by at least $150 before FIOS arrives and I get better service and a modern user interface on multiple TVs.

Lets blame the HOA for Openband shutting down service... why not. The HOA should have know this and planned contingencies and... well sorry, sounds like a broken record. If you had a reasonable argument to make, sure but this is not fair to lay blame on the HOA. June 1st is a self imposed Openband date. It sucks some homes might lose TV service for what seems to be a few weeks. Complain to Openband?

Sorry if you misunderstood me. I don't blame the SWHOA for Openband shutting down service. I blame the SWHOA for not properly managing the process so that a full phase will not even be able to call for service until some unknown date after the agreed upon May 31st deadline while the third phase just got the chance to start ordering service this past week. It's not like Openband decided at the end of May they were going to cease video services on June 1st. They sent a letter dated December 26, 2018 stating they were going to cease video services on June 1st. So the SWHOA had plenty of warning to ensure the process was managed properly and think about contingency plans. I blame the SWHOA for their cowardly updates after 6PM on a Friday. As opposed to regularly commenting with their residents during the week, the Board waits until after close of business on a Friday. Way to use the patented Friday News Dump on the residents.

I have been told at several meetings that the SWHOA's sole purpose is to manage telecommunications service. Telecommunications services include cable television. If the job of managing telecommunications services is too big a job for the Board, then they need to seriously review their process and/or consider turning the responsibility to someone else.

Is anyone else seeing the irony that residences have been able to release themselves of OpenBand television for many months now - yet there are a good number of people who are still using the service (at least up until June 1). Yes you can get streaming but it doesn't cover all the local content as well as other channels that don't provide streaming services.

Totally agree with Jackdog. However I ALSO agree that Phase 4 folks (and I’m one of them) should take this opportunity to learn all the benefits of live TV streaming over the internet. If you’re diligent in investigating the options, you’ll find you can get ALL of the Live TV you want (including local stations), at a fraction of the cost of FIOS TV. We have been using live TV services for over a year, and it’s great. Frankly, I hope that most of the SW residents decide to stream live TV and not let the vultures at FIOS get their claws into you for a multi-year contract for TV services that is completely unnecessary. You will save thousands of dollars over the course of years if you stream live TV versus paying for an outdated cable tv bundle. I urge all residents to check out www.cordcuttersnews.com and investigate the live TV streaming options that are out there.

Scott - care to share what services you currently have that get you to an equal footing with the cable plans? What streaming service for Live TV and then what you use for "DVR" functionality - I know this may be something like Hulu for traditional broadcast stations.

DIRECTV looks like a bait and switch program. If I read it correctly - $35 a month for the lowest programming tier for 12 months and then on to $81/month after - and you need to commit for 2 years. Which gets you to an average of $58/month. Preferred HD from Verizon is listed at $54.99 a month (https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/97e20a_c852809c6f6c4570951680237218ec0a.pdf).

You didn't say there were - but I don't see any savings here (Verizon vs DIRECTV). This also does not take into consideration any DVR or extra equipment to view on multiple TVs if required.

We've tried literally every live TV service. We've settled on YouTubeTV as our favorite. Great dvr functionality. No storage limit and no tag on fee for dvr service.

Agree that directvnow is not the best option. During football season I added sling blue package so I could get nfl redzone. We also liked playstation vue, but it's a bit more expensive.

Hulu live TV was good too but last I checked didn't have all the local network affiliates. Fubu is for sports fans but has some key networks too.

Check out this article for the latest comparison of the major live TV streaming options

No... you can just buy the 50 a month plan and go month to month. You can get real live local tv, and sports channels. You can get hbo in the 50 package. You won't pay per tv (up to 3) and no gear to rent. Verizon's bade doesn't match any of that. They have cloud dvr (albit a bit limited) as well... but they have a hybrid on demand that reduces need for dvr too.

DirectvNOW offers that month-to-month live streaming flexibility. Regular old Directv satellite service doesn’t. It’s the name that trips people up.

I’ve been using DirecTV Now since 2017. Luckily, I'm grandfathered into the old "Go Big" package at a great rate. The current packages for new customers are not as good of a deal, but they are still worth looking into. I use Amazon Fire sticks to stream, and everything works great (Live Local Channels, cloud DVR, multiple streams on different devices, On-Demand content, etc). I'll never go back to traditional cable with boxes to rent.

The only channel I don't get is MASN, so I have to find "alternative" ways to watch Nats games.

Everyone should look into streaming options (DirecTV Now, Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling, etc) before committing to Verizon for television - there are just so many good streaming options now that are just as good as cable and more cost effective.
