I have been responsible and only shop for food that I immidiately need for the next few days but for some reason all the food is gone and now there are slim pickings to feed my family!

Great job you maniacs! Have fun throwing away rotting produce that you will never consume in time! You cant fit it all in your freezer.

Please just buy what you need. Don't make it difficult for folks like myself who are not panicking. That only adds to the problems.

Im annoyed since this was totally avoidable if people had continued to make regular sized purchases. I had to drive to 4 stores just to get enough supplies for the rest of the week. I will continue to only buy what I need. It's not like the food suppliers are going to stop producing goods any time soon. Anyone stocking up on supplies is an idiot. I can't remember the last time I actually needed to use a shopping cart.

And what in the world are people doing with all that toilet paper? Are they having the panic craps or something?

Most people are followers. OJ Simpson tweets from Costco showing a pallet full of TP and bottled water and the sheep decide to do the same thing before it's all gone.

Twilight zone had an episode: The Monsters Are due on Mulberry Street - I guess human nature is a constant over time.

Leaders need to step up and orchestrate healthy behavior so others are calmed. So far people have been a bigger problem than the actual virus.

People would not be confused and panic shopping if they were given accurate information from the beginning, and we would not be in this position to quarantine had aggressive measures been implemented earlier - Singapore and Taiwan are perfect examples. They are carrying on with business as usual.

Not trying to open up a debate on how we got here. Whats done is done. Just want people to not lose their minds buying crap they don't immidiately need.

It really has nothing to do with toilet paper. If not that then something else. People want to feel in control in a situation that is uncontrollable, so this is manifested in buying food and supplies in greater volume that what is needed. I temper that with the fact that most people are woefully unprepared for an emergency.

I have to admit that once I heard what Pennsylvania did with their liquor and beer distributors, I did run to our ABC store to get a few extra bottles!

People should be buying a little extra to reduce the number of times that they need to go to the store, lessening the probability of contact between infected people/unaware carriers and others who are not infected. Also, fewer people are eating out, which means more groceries purchased. The stores are doing their best to keep pace with the change in demand.

Not a debate? Stocks tanked, stores are shuttered, folks out of jobs, rent due, no health coverage. Stimulus packages will help, but now we're on an unsustainable fiscal path. Leaders eventually stepped up - 6 weeks too late. No reason to panic?

On the bright side; smog laden cities are seeing blues skies and greening trees, waterways are showing better health. COVID-19 and the positive affect on the environment might actually save more lives than the virus takes.

Right and if the leaders of this country instituted border closings and isolation orders 6 weeks earlier the public would have been ok with that? People were angry when we shut down travel from China. People screamed bloody murder when we shut down travel to Europe.

There's no stopping the spread of this virus. You are just as contagious if not even more contagious before any symptoms show up. The silver lining is that most people will be asymptomatic or have mild infections. Herd immunity is the eventual outcome. Not everyone will catch the virus but enough will that there wont be enough new foreign bodies to infect, causing the virus to burn its self out. Unless it mutates, then those who never got infected could get even more sick. (See 1918 outbreak)

Strategy 1: Isolate everyone to flatten the curve - This can take months if not a year or two before the virus runs its course or until a vaccine is developed. Would save some lives but crash the entire economy. I think it would take years to dig out of this hole.

Strategy 2: Let everyone get infected organically. Endure the pain but you are done with this in another month or two. I think this is the inevitable outcome. Senior citizens will bear the brunt of this strategy. Not pleasant for anyone living with aging relatives.

Both strategies suck but neither is the end of the world. The problem with this virus isn't that it is sooo much more severe than the flu. If fact if you get the flu you probably know that you have it. Most people with this virus will never even know. The actual death rate is probably much lower than what we are seeing in the stats.

The problem with coronavirus is that it cannot be contained easily. We are trying to fight the virus by attacking the one thing it does best - spreading. Do defeat an enemy you find a weakness. With coronavirus, it needs a body to replicate too. Surround it with immune people and it chokes its self out.

Maybe some people who are smarter than me can figure out the details.

It's still unknown how the human immune system responds to this virus. Sometimes it persists after a person who recovered, tests negative, and then later shows symptoms of it again. Was the test faulty? Too many unknowns yet and the fear that it mutates is very real. Being asymptomatic does mean you get by unscathed - you're still contagious and don't suffer the symptoms - not very reassuring.

Yes, we would have been okay 'if' advice from public health experts well-versed in infectious disease were not ignored. I'm not referring to the underfunded CDC. They made a few blunders already that cost time. Maybe if we had a pandemic response team, things would be different today.

Add to that, immediate reaction of screaming or protesting are acceptable than to let it happen then nothing left to control.
