VM could always advertise it on ebay and craig's list for a buck, and then someone who likes to renovate old houses could buy it and move it and fix it up. problem solved.

Wrong; VM also owns the land on which that house sits. There's a lot of money sitting there. Either way, they have already agreed to hand over the house to the HOA in the future.

That is not quite accurate - VM does own the property including the house but they have not agreed to turn it over to the HOA. It is actually the other way around. The HOA has agreed to take the stone house from VM if VM chooses, but as of now there is not guarantee the HOA will get it.

Ok, it has been almost a year since VM was notified of the roof issues at the house. Now the issue is larger and more severe. Are they hoping Mother Nature takes care of the house falliing down so they don't have to do anything with it?

I have mentioned it several times to them. They simply don't take care of it. They are unloading it on the county or HOA, so why spend money on it?
I was told they couldn't find anyone willing to go up on the roof.

Noticed the other day that one of the windows now is missing half of its board and is wide open. This is a sure invitation that some kids might decide to go exploring. It is extremely dangerous.

Where can I learn about the history of this old house?

Really no "history" of this house. The guy that used to own all the land the Broadlands sits on lived there. It's not that old, or well built, would take more money than anyone wants to invest to make it anything. The best thing would be for VM or the county to take it and demolish it. Put in a nice picnic area or skate park for the kids.

What is "old" to you? No history, well it was here before any of our houses were built. It's so sad that the first thought would be to tear it down and put up a "skate park". There is a picnic area there already, it is rare that I see someone there having a picnic.

I would rather see the house restored and have it turned in to a museum or reception hall, etc. I can envision some of the girls from the Broadlands having a wedding reception there and taking pictures in front of the house on the porch or building a balcony for them to throw the bouquet.

I think it would be a shame to tear it down, but it would not suprise me if they did.

There's a sign across the street right off the trail (kind of near the pool and cemetery) that gives a little bit of the history.

Restoring that house would easily cost way over $500K, if not $1M. And then you would have the cost to maintain it after it is restored, etc.

Here are a few interesting documents from the early nineties that we have at the Nature Center about the Stone House, the graveyard and the parcel of land. There are also some old photos of the dairy farm that I will post later.

Well, I guess at these costs it was fitting that I saw two Turkey Vultures sitting on the the roof this morning as I drove by. It is is a bad as you imply, then maybe it is not safe for our kids to play at the playground or have Broadlands Live hosted there.

I guess VM will wait till the property is condemed and then build a strip mall with a nail salon, and martial arts studio.

The play ground is perfectly safe. The lawn areas are perfectly safe. Lets not get hysterical.

Why not just tear it down? The Stone House provides little to no historical value, no esoteric value, and has zero functionality. Other than the fact that people say 'I like the Stone House,' it serves no purpose to the community as a whole. I took my kids on a hike to the Old Stone House the other day and I just so happened to have a granola bar, some moth balls, and a lock picking set in my fanny pack. As I was proceeding to show my 3 year old how to pick a lock, I was reminded of something as insignificant as the Old Stone House....fanny packs. Would you really miss them if they were gone?

Yes, but the building is not. I agree, the rest of the areas are way nice!

Any new developments? Being new to community, I saw the house for the first time last week, and was curious as to what is its story, status, future. i read this thread from start to finish, and was hoping to read a positive outcome, but it ends with a cliffhanger :) who currently owns it, and is it available for sale to a private party or a small business?

It is owned by the Broadlands HOA. It is not available to a private party or small business. Interior is not habitable.

You can find historical information at robertstoy.com or by searching “Broad Run Church”, in Ashburn, not Warrenton. The church property and the house were both part of the original lot.
