Now that we migrated over to Comcast, it looks like they just increased internet only service from $43 to $58. That sounds reasonable......NOT! Monopolistic price gouging. If FIOS were here, does anyone really think they would charge that much? Since we have no alternatives, who are they to compete with? Why not "stick it to the consumer". Im not sure how they can justify a 35% increase in the 3 or so months since they migrated, especially since network service prices have done nothing but go down in the last 7 years.
    Verizon, hear my pleas!

Internet only with adelphia was 53+modem if I recall before I switched to adelphia cable. This was before their 'premium' tier and they only had one service level.

Wow! We had been paying $42.95 with Adelphia and now it does look like Comcast will increase to $57.95 for High Speed internet only. That is a HUGE increase. Are there any other good options for this area for High Speed?

Not in the Broadlands .. unless you want to go to satellite and put up with the storm interference.

FWIW ... what speed will they be offering at the new rate ??

I am not sure if all these are available, but the price list shows these speeds for "internet only" service.

    16M/2M @ $67.95
    6M/768K @ $67.95
    6M/768K @ $57.95
    4M/384K @ $57.95
    384k/384k @ $39.95

Based on speed tests, I'd guess am currently on a 6M/768K service. I am not sure why there are two price levels for the 6M/768K service, but that's what the sheet shows.

    Re: Comcast price increase.....

FYI-I called Comcast after receiving this letter today. I threatened to cancel my service (it was going from $24.95 for the slowest speed up to $39.99-crazy). The nice woman asked if I wanted her to check to see if there were any specials. She told me they were running a special on their faster, 2-something speed (sorry-I'm not a techy) for $19.95 for 6 months. There are no subscriptions required, I can cancel at any time and you prepay, so, after the 6 month intro fee when I notice my price increase, I can call back and ask for more specials... So, for $5 LESS per month, I am getting faster service for the next 6 months. Talk about crazy! But it's definitely worth the call... Also, all I have is internet-no cable tv or other bundled service. Hope this helps some people.

What phone number did you use for Comcast to get the "special"? I'm internet only also, and not happy with the increase.

I called 1-800-COMCAST. I pressed the number for billing questions and then the one to speak to someone...

    Re: Comcast price increase.....

One of the guys at work reports that when Verizon brought FIOS through his neighborhood in Centerville, Cox Cable dropped prices and provided special offers in order to compete.

Each bill will be a monthly reminder to switch to FIOS as soon as it comes through (I know Neil, it will never happen due to too much rock). I am setting up the new email addresses after this switch to @comcast.net to the more portable @gmail.com to allow a near seamless transition in the future.

Comcast sure is not increasing the loyalty of their customer base. It looks to be a move to try to cash in while they still can before competition comes to town.

Has anyone used the Sprint wireless internet network? How does the speed compare to cable?

    Re: Comcast price increase.....

On the phone with comcast right now...

They told me over the phone that this price increase is designed to build their 'footprint' in the cable tv market. People that 'switch' over to bundled service with them will continue to receive the $42.95 rate. I told the lady on the phone that sounds contrary to the beginning of their letter that states "Dear Valued Customer..." This seems a bit like we are being held hostage by a company that conrols a monopoly of the area. I might switch to dial up on principle.

For those with Comcast for TV service, any idea what the status is for them to release their HD-TiVo DVR? Given that DirecTV has ditched TiVo and Comcast has picked it up I may make the switch.

Well, I don't know if anyone else got the letter in the mail today, but it looks like a fair number of things are going up in price besides the internet. The DVR service is going from $4.95 to $11.95 a month (and if you want the Tivo capability later, then add more $$ ontop of this charge). Any additional digital outlets are also going up from $8 to $11.95 as well.

I did notice that while some things are going up in price, there are some decreases that may help offset the increase some. Of course I still expect and overall increase. Note the "HDTV Plus" services were $5 and are now N/A. I believe this was the fee Adelphia charged if you wanted any of the HD channels on top of the local networks. I remember being a little upset when I first went HD and learned the HD charge was for only about 5 channels and if you wanted ESPN/etc in HD you had to pay even more.

    Re: Comcast price increase.....

I called yesterday to cancel my service. They gave me 12 months at $33/mo. . It helps. Soon after the phone call, my cable modem was rebooted with an incorrect configuration and would not allow me to DHCP to their equipment. I spent 4 hours on the phone with their techs........ All I can say is that Adelphia's techs were much better, and Im talking their first level of support here folks. Comcast wants to push everything off to 24-48 hrs. and this woman had the nerve to tell me it would be 3-10 days before they could fix my configuration!!! I said absolutely not, fix it right now!!! It took 4 hrs but finally, it was fixed. I was never so frustrated with Adelphia like I have been with Comcast. Then, on top of that, my wife's email account was entirely removed and erased.......unbelievable. I hope you guys dont have to go through this, what a nightmare.

    Re: Comcast price increase.....

I am currently switching to HDTV and looked at Dish (current customer), DirecTV, and Comcast cable (all with a DVR and HBO) packages and found that even with the "discount" for the internet, DirecTV + Comcast internet was still the lowest cost option. (of course OTA HD is lowest cost of all, but can't get HBO, nor will it DVR my OTA HD, that would require another investment).

In addition, they will have to overcome the bad taste that I still have over previous cable experiences and the very positive experience I have had with satellite TV. So, they better sharpen their pencil a bit more if they really want to draw more customers from satellite service.

They should be careful, because they are bumping up against Sprint Mobile Broadband cards at $59.99/month (unlimited usage) - which comes with the added portability of internet on your laptop at a lot of places (I see folks on their laptops at swim meets using these cards, and it looks like a great service).

Well I must not be convincing on the phone, or got the wrong CS agent, she was totally willing to let me cancel my high speed service over the fact that I disagreed with their price increase. She called my bluff and would have canceled my service. Any other ideas on how to sign up for the special introductory price or avoid this obnoxious increase from $42.95 to $57.95?

    Re: Comcast price increase.....

I just called Comcast. I told them I have a competing offer from Sprint for Mobile Broadband at $30/month (I get my brother's employee discount) and I would like to stay a loyal Comcast customer due to our long and great relationship and was there anything they could do to help. She checked - the promotional offer was $19.95/month for six months or $33/month for 12 months. I chose the 12 @ $33. She claims no changes to email addreses or impacts on my connection - we'll see.

I think it is luck of the draw. When talking with Dish Network and their customer retention department, all they could give me was that they feel they have the best service and package including the most HD channels. "Yea, but I don't want to watch Kung-Fu or Anime channels in HD...Sir, we have the best service...okay I'm going to switch to DirecTV and here is their offer ___ ...Sir we feel have the best service...etc. etc."

    Good luck.

    Re: Comcast price increase.....

I don't think you have this one quite right.

Note however, the comcast reps are pitifully unhelpful still given our 'transition' period. I don't think anything will be real clear till they start billing it. The one I talked to today insisted that equipment charges weren't changing (yet the sheet shows it does for just standard digital STBs from $4.75 to $5).

I'm paying $11.95 for a HD/DVR STB.. and I know before to add more were basically the same $11.95 price. The digital STB alone (no DVR) is $5. The price list shows DVR still as 8.95

What I find most interesting is trying to compare comcast's bundles vs the adelphia ones. Even with the price increase, I think my existing Adelphia Gold AdvantagePak is still cheaper then Comcast's bundles.

Only if I drop to HBO only, does their Digital Silver+Internet+HDDVR come out to be cheaper. About $141 vs ~$150 with the legacy bundle. If I drop all premiums, I can get to about $133.

Where it gets interesting is their Tripple Play packages. To get Digital+HBO+ST+Internet+VoIP for $129. I could basically get VoIP on top of the existing package I have now and still drop my bill $8 and then drop my $70 verizon bill. I wonder when they will start offering voip for our area?
