    LOL!

While I love Linux, I'm not one of those fanatics that push it down people's throats. If someone is comfortable using Windows, then so be it. Most of my family outside of my household is using Windows. At home, I use a mix of Linux, Windows and MAC OSX. My philosophy is 'the right tool for the right job'. If someone approches me with questions about Linux or they're interested in trying it out, etc, then I'm more than happy to help them. Those folks that use the "Just move to Linux" answer as their catch all are simply missing the point...

What's really freaky is my 5 year old daughter is now comfortable using a Windows PC, a Mac running OSX or even a Gnome-based Linux install. She can fire up the browser, go to some pre-approved sites and then shut down the browser. She understands the concept of minimizing/maximizing windows, etc. At that age, I was having fun typing "2+2" on a calculator and amazed that I could get an answer... I can't imagine how 'dumb' I'm going to feel in 10-15 years at the rate children are learning/exposed to computers these days...

So who knows, maybe when she's older and begins to drive (about 25-30 years old :D), she'll ask for "Ms. Linux" plates ;)

I've never done it, but I have recursively deleted /etc before and seem to remember symlinking everything in /etc/rc.d to some random file on accident. :(

I'm surprised that the Dell came with alot of stuff .. ususally its only programs like their musicbox, Dell online support, some photoprogram, and these are usually easy to remove via the 'Add/Remove Programs' .

Now, HPs on the other hand ... oy!

My new XPS that I just got from Dell was completely loaded down with crap. I tried uninstalling and that just caused all kinds of issues like orphaned services eating 70% of the CPU and 600mb of memory and doing nothing. It's best to just wipe the machine and rebuild it. Luckily Vista is one of the easiest OS's I've ever installed. Set the partition and it just goes and is done very quickly. Much faster than installing XP.

All I know is, when I first got the dell and checked what was loading at startup I could not fit the list on my 30 inch monitor ha ha I also don't have a clue what most of that stuff is. My son plans to go thru it and maybe even reformat the computer. Next time I will most likely have him build me a computer again at a faction of the price I paid for this one.

My Dell laptop I got came preloaded with Vista had no extra stuff loaded on on it.

The only thing that could be considered extra were a couple of Dell system utilities, other than that it was just like as if you installed Vista from scratch.

It was a nice relief because my last Dell that came with XP preloaded had so much extra stuff on it, I ended up having to do a fresh XP install to get rid of all the custom stuff they did.

I hope Dell is finally starting to get it about not installing things we don't want.

My guess is since Vista was just released, they haven't built a 'gold image' of a Vista install with all the normal crap they stick in there. Once the image is out of testing, rest assured Dell will be back to their old ways. All manufacturers do it; it's a big revenue stream for them and in a way, could lower the cost of the computer for the end user. Doesn't mean I like the practice though.

Wes, did you get actually media (CD/DVD) with your Dell?

What REALLY kills me, is when they don't include recovery media and have everything in a special partition on the HD. Many times, you are given the option to generate recovery media, but I have seen instances where this wasn't possible. So, if you have something that chews your partitions, you're basically SOL, and have to order recovery media from the manufacturer, at your expense...

I wonder if you just got lucky with vista, because it is so new maybe they were not geared up yet to preload all the junk. I can't imagine dell or any other major computer company not loading up the computer because they make money off the stuff.

In my case I asked the rep not to preload it and he said he would make that request and it should come with a lot less stuff. Well if what I got was a lot less stuff then I hate to see what a fully loaded one looks like. :(

I got a Dell Windows Vista disc that comes with Vista and drivers.

Its not the holographic OEM disc from Microsoft. Not sure if that makes a difference, but I can reinstall Vista from the disc if I want.

As far as the partition layout goes, I have a 100GB/7200rpm drive. It came with a C and D drive partitions. The C drive is ~92GB and the D drive is ~2 GB is a "recovery drive" which has a copy of Vista install and other drivers that might be needed. My guess is they created the D drive with a copy of the contents of the Dell Windows Vista disc so I can access the contents without the using the Dell Windows Vista disc.

I should say 'supposed to', I've never used it but apparently it works fairly well.

I'd check to make sure it works on Vista first ... !!

Steve, the last few years whenever I ordered from Dell, you had the choice to get a copy of the OS restoration disk, for an additional $10. Previously, they were free !!

FWIW ... they do include the program to create those disks, but its still very annoying to have to take the time to do that. Again, HP is one of the biggest offenders here. When you create their restore disks, they not only include the OS, but every single fricking program that they preload. I've got a HP box at my church someone donated (didn't ask me first .. ) that created 16 CDs !!
