Yesterday my neighbor's lawn caught fire, most likely due to a discarded cigarette. The grass is dry and caught quickly. Fortunately it happened during the day and they saw the flames and called the fire department.

I'm watering my lawn today and hoping for a good soaking rain.

Any more info? Was this from a cigarette the homeowner discarded or was it thrown out a window of a car? I know how dry it is now so I take extra care when smoking to make sure all my ashes are out. Some people dont put one and one together and think that dry grass is gonna catch.

Speaking of grass, the greenie in me hates watering the lawn, but it just looks so bad with the "drought conditions" we are having.

So is everyone elses lawn. Dirt doesnt catch fire though. Maybe we should raze all the grass and just have dirt. We can paint it green too.

We live near Hillside ES. I don't want to give out the exact address, but if you drive around the neighborhoods the charred lawn is easy to spot.

They don't know for sure what caused it, but a discarded cigarette is the most likely cause. Neither the homeowners nor any of us neighbors smoke. Our neighborhood does get a lot of foot traffic (walkers, dog owners, parents bringing their kids to the play area behind Hillside, and so on).

I've been loath to water my lawn as over the years I've seen it get brown in the hot summer regardless of watering or not. I think the hot temps are a bigger factor than lack of water in driving the grass into dormancy. Look at the medians that get water trucks twice a day, and they're turning brown too.

    Anyone for artificial turf?

That is nothing more than eqivalent of watering your lawn for 5 minutes. With the current conditions, lawns require a significant watering (1/2 hour or longer) every few days to keep it truly green.

People should be AT LEAST watering their lawns weekly to keep it healthy and to make "recovery" quicker.

T8erman - I wish you were our neighbor.

I agree with you on the watering...we run our sprinklers every other day for 10 minutes a zone. However this year I added the following product to our irrigation system and our lawn is emerald green... (minus the dogs who use our lawn as a tiolet)...I think I solved that problem this year.

    IRONITEĀ® Plus
Liquid Lawn & Garden Spray 6-2-1

I do mine at least a half hour a day in one area and move those areas around as the week goes on. My grass still is pretty brown.

And as far as the liver condioting goes, get at me sometime next week. You do know that I have draft beer on tap every day. And a foosball table and a poker table.

I hope this batch turns out. The thing about homebrewing is sometimes you win sometimes you dont. In the next few days I will be starting a "english bitter".

And no they are not very bitter, but they are session beers. Meaning you can drink a few pints in a session and not got wasted.

Plus, most of the watering by the trucks is done in the middle of the day. Great way to burn the grass too!

I guess it is about time for a "trade your screen name in for your real name" party. Looks like alot of people would like to come and partake.

    Wealth doesn't hurt! :D

And darlin, ICE COLD?!?!? Not the type of beer Skull is brewing. Most ales are best served in the Cool (50ish) to Cellar (mid 50's) range. Bitters should almost always be served at Cellar temps.

Beer (or any drink) served iced cold will certainly quench ones thirst but it actually numbs the tastesbuds thus "restricting" ones ability to truly taste a beer.

That is true but it causes a dillema in the beer world. Beers under 7% abv tend to spoil faster if they are not stored at around 39 degrees after conditioning. The optimal drinking temp of most ales is around 45 degrees, anything above that tends to decarbonate the beer much quicker. So Ice cold no, but close.

Also another thing that people tend to deal with wrong is head on a beer. It is always good to have 1-2 inches of a nice head on a beer. This allows for a more robust flavor profile after the bubbles have shaken up the flavors a little. It also makes for the fine line of sustainable drinking and gas intake. When you have beer with no head...think baseball games...you actually take all the carbon dioxide into your tummy instead of releasing it out of the glass. And we all know where that gas ends up going. And too much head will make for a beer that is hard to drink because it flats out and becomes almost too rich.

And you can use beer to put out grass fires.
