The dicussion of community policing with a 'sub station" located here has been discussed. Cliff has been in contact with our sheriffs department to see how we might be able to proceed with this.

Possibly what I am talking about perhaps is different then an substation as they are expensive and usually manned far more. Out in southern california the spaces first were donated by the developer. It was also a place for the community to chat with the police and the same police were assigned to the substation so he or she really became part of the community. It is kind of a gathering place for the community and police in a simple way. Further the police paroled the community by bicycle when they could and would stop along the way again chat with the kids and residents. Not an substation that takes millions in bonds to build and maintain. Far different.
The interaction between the kids and residents allowed the police to know where the potential hot spots were, such as possibly kids hanging out drinking or starting fires and when. They also used very young police so the kids would feel comfortable. Again what they did out there was done in a very short period of time without a lot of money and was discussed and then done in a very short time. What I have seen around here is discuss discuss discuss and discuss or discuss with little effectiveness then little action or none and this goes from roads to whatever. What we need less of is discussion and more action. Or effective discussion with results.

Like the Broadland's rec center bonds if everyone knew the name would be a problem as said here on these forums, why was the name not changed and advertised in a big way as to what it was exactly was. Everyone has jumped in after the fact but where were you before the election. I still say is was the money not the name as we are extremely informed and educated county, most people are not that stupid to think it was an 32 million dollar center only for the broadlands. Further why was it so much money when first construction prices are dropping and the other center which is quite elaborate over in Claude Moore park was far cheaper and built during the high cost of the building boom. I think we need to get people involved that really know the ups and downs of construction as a neutral party before we through that kind of money around again.

Lee - actually, I think the community policing efforts currently active in Ashburn Village, Ashburn Farm, and Lovettsville (I think) are exactly what you are talking about. They aren't massive stations with many deputies. It's typically one deputy who gets to know the community - and is primarily based out of a community spot (the Sports Pavilion in the Village, I think - don't quote me). I think that's what Broadlands is hoping for.

A separate "substation" was recently approved by the voters for the Sterling Park area - that's another topic for another thread - but it is of the larger, multiple deputies (and holding areas) type...

dcdavis that is a phenomenal idea that has been put forth, a police presence, in an mini spot in places like the sports pavilion. I did not know that. Well another reason to get an regional rec center in our area with a mini police station built in. But lets see if it can cost much much less especially since we are in a building slump. :) A cheaper place is better then no rec center at all. We must think fiscally conservative in these slow times especially with the coming of cut backs on federal contracts which could hurt many many people here. And we should always be fiscally conservative anyway. Lets think ahead and pro act instead of reacting all the time. And if the cut backs don't happen and the economy does not die then we will be better off anyway being fiscally conservative. You know like winning the lottery you don't expect it but if the economy does not tank then that is like winning the lottery and we all win by keeping an sharp eye on what our county spends.

The location that was being discussed was having a sheriffs deputy located out of the Nature Center as a 'base". The idea is just what your speaking of, having a deputy work out of Broadlands to get to know this community, be a consistant person to get to know the kids and families, etc.

I believe in giving second chances especially to kids, but this kid is a monster in the fact he has escalated to such violence and potential murder. It would be interesting how this kid deteriorated from an honor student to this.

Why don't you chill on bashing his mother until you know the facts!

How the heck do you know what his family environment is/was like. Sounds like the kid was a good student and did not cause any trouble, UNTIL RECENTLY. Good student and good grades USUALLY get the parents high marks these days.

Perhaps as sharse stated, he is addicted to drugs and alcohol (don't think that some of your neighbors aren't either) causing his dangerous behaviour.

And as for his attacking the restaurant workers, that is COMPLETELY and UTTERLY inexcusible, BUT, PERHAPS, JUST THROWING IT OUT THERE...

Did the employees confront him further when he was out the door? In many cases like this, bartenders, bouncers, wait-staff get injured, when they themselves get a bit over-zealous in removing a troublesome patron. First and formest, the poilce should have been called IMMEDIATELY and the patron notified of such. Quite often this is enough to get the person out of the restaurant.

tell you what- regardless of economics, race, gender, religion or education, some people are just SCUMBAGS. period. no amount of perfect parenting or tough love wil un-scum a scumbag who wants to be scummy. i can't stand the attitude that someone's behavior is someone else's fault. he's screwed up plenty, and it's all on HIM.

yeah, he is responsible for his actions and choices. absolutely. but to call him a scumbag who just wants to be a scumbag?

let's hope you never have a child who makes a couple bad decisions, becomes addicted to alcohol or drugs, and is then owned by that addiction. it happens to good kids and good people.

the guy is a repeat offender, but it seems like there is one common root cause. it's all about getting drugs or alcohol. that tells me he's got an addiction. if it was my son, i'd do everything i could do deal with that addiction. who knows? maybe he's a good kid who had gotten good grades, but is now being controlled by his addiction?

let's get him off the streets so others are safe and he can deal with the addiction. but i'd watch these harsh judgments and using words like scumbag and trash.

Are you kidding, it's obvious, one time offense, yeah, give him the benifit of the doubt and hopefully a lessone is learned, but this would be a 4th, (yes 4 times) offense. It doesn't matter if his upbringing was good or not, or if the resturant employee may or may not have provoked him. He has got issues, and additiction is only one of them. More than likely Mommie and Daddy have bailed him out of previous issues prior to his being an adult. Obviously didn't learn anything, so maybe it's time to let him fend for himself and spend a little time cooling off behind bars (in jail, no pun intended).

I've always found that those who find it cathartic to take joy in the pain of another, especially a Mom, and make light of another's self-destruction to be rodents themselves...it takes a small person to trash a young person with such glee. Your mother must be awfully proud of you as well.

i'm judging his actions- not him. and based on the list of offenses, he is acting like a scumbag. if my child behaved like a scumbag, guess what i'd tell him? "Hey- you're acting like a SCUMBAG." i would do whatever i could to help him but i wouldn't sugarcoat and deny what he was. i wouldn't let him blame his awful behavior on addiction. plenty of addicts don't stab people to get what they want. i know addicts to choose scummy behavior over help and support from their families, and i know addicts to choose to get help and want to be better people.

maybe if people were made to see their actions for what they are- a CHOICE- and not babied with "poor addict can't help himself"- they would pull themselves up and do the right thing or risk being ostracized by society and their families. they misbehave as long as they have something to blame it on, but when they are forced to confront the fact that THEY are the problem- not drugs, not alcohol, not "addictive personality disorder" or whatever- they either FIX it, go to jail, or live like crap until they die.

and yes- i speak from very personal experience. fortunately my special person has finally chosen to stop being a scumbag and take responsibility for her actions.

he's a young adult about to ruin his whole life. coddling and excuses won't change that.

agree totally with the no excuses approach, but disagree with assuming that this guy just wants to be a scumbag and labeling him as such. read your original post. it wasn't just his actions, you called him a scumbag and implied that that's all he wanted to be.

but i do agree with your approach and demanding personal responsibility.

According to the newspaper the parents did not cooperate fully with the police and this kid did not turn himself in until 4:30 pm on saturday. Sounds like a kid that got off easy on previous problems. So now he has escalated to this. I say we must sacrifice a child or many when given this many chances and still is a criminal. Zero tollerance. As a cop friend of mine said he is always amazed how one bad apple kid can influence so many good kids. I think that statement coming from law enforcement that see this stuff everyday says a lot. There is just too many kids around here and they must learn after given several chances you are going to be put away for a long long time. They all cry the bible when caught.
