I'm not a big fan of the Skins, but I REALLY wanted them to win today. They played inspired defense and the offense moved the ball, but continued to struggle inside the Red Zone. But the emotion that they played with was admirable.

To see them lose in the final seconds, especially after Gibbs made a huge mistake, was devastating for them. It's always more difficult to lose a close game, especially one you had in hand, than get blown out.

Prayers are with the Skins and families. That was tough to watch.

I think that Mr. Gibbs has done great things in bringing discipline back tot he Skins. However, his coaching skills, and those of his staff, are suddenly seriously lacking. They are making rookie mistakes and costing their team the game.

I am not saying let's make the mistake of bringing acollege coach on board, I just think it's time for new blood in the coaches' office.

    Unless we're talking Frank Beahmer.

    Agree, Boomer.

I guess what I've seen most is this: great teams find a way to win, while teams like the Skins usually find a way to lose.

Speculating that Gibbs' error cost the Redskins the game is just that--pure speculation. The Bills' kicker made a 51-yarder that didn't count because of the 1st timeout. Is there any reason to believe that he wouldn't have made the same 51-yard kick again?

I'm all for finding scapegoats, but come on...

...but why even give them an increased chance? That specific penalty was just plain stupid... the coaching staff should be ashamed of themselves and just flat out apologize... not like Gibbs was attempting to say this morning. He danced around the issue and seemed to be thinking of excuses. In no way was he taking responsibility for that mistake and that just looked bad. And think about it - a 51 yard kick vs. 36? You look up the statistics but I bet that percentages are in favor of the 36 yard kick (rhetorical of course).

That kind of penalty - is something that Gibbs and his coaching staff should have known and just ended up adding insult to injury. Place blame where the loss lays... not 100% but pretty much the majority.

I thought Gibbs squarely took responsibility for it last night after the game. No need to beat a dead horse. I don't like placing blame on one decision or call at the end of a game.

Why didn't the Skins convert their Red Zone opportunities into TD's instead of field goals? This has been a consistent problem the entire year. It seems like they are afraid the scoreboard will break is they score 28 points in a game!

Why weren't the Skins able to control the ball and run out the clock at the end? Why did they give up such a huge pass play to the Bills to enable even the 51-yarder?

I can even excuse Gibbs screwing up in this emotional game--except for the fact that it's been a pattern with him (poor clock management, running out of time outs, slow play calling, etc.)>

I want both NFL and NCAA to get rid of the coach's ability to call timeouts. I think it should only come from a player on the field. This latest trend of icing the kicker right before the snap by the coach practically whispering the TO to the ref is garbage.

I see that Baltimore has attended the Redskins"how to blow a football game" class. The Ravens also lost the game because of the time out calls.

Agree. But I saw an analysis somewhere that showed the supposed icing isn't really working. On a couple occasions, a kicker missed the first disallowed attempt, but nailed the second attempt. One college kicker thanked the opposing coach for icing him this past weekend--he said he needed the timeout to calm himself down!

The good teams find a way to win (even with juggling the ball while falling out of bounds last minute TD catches like the Pats!) and the bad teams find a way to lose. Glad for the smug Billick.

I am not opposed to icing and I think it's all part of the game. What I don't like is the coach's ability to call a TO by practically whispering to the ref the split second before the snap in clear efforts to trick the players into starting the play. If you remove the coach's ability to call TO's, then you'll also remove the ability for such tricks.

On that note, I bet both the Ravens and Redskins players today would like to remove the coach's ability to call TOs

Gaffney had the fingers of both hands on the ball at all times, with two feet inbounds. It was only after he was stepping out of bounds that he moved the ball to tuck it against his side (which he's allowed to do).

I really don't see that play as a very close call at all--it was clearly a catch. Even if you think he didn't maintain possession through the entire sequence you could hardly call what he did with the ball a "juggle"--you're exposing your bias Silence! (Call me biased if you want, but I still don't see how the call on the field could be overturned based on the video evidence.)

    Okay, you are biased!!

I knew I'd get a response from you on that, Pats fan! I have no bias--in fact, I want the Patsies to go 16-0 to shut Don Shula and the '72 Dolphins up finally. I appreciate excellence in anything...and the way the Patriots execute with excellence, stay calm and find ways to win games impresses me. Plus I hate Billick. So my bias was for the Patsies, but I am not blinded like you are :)

You, on the other hand, are completely biased and void of any judgment on the play, ha ha! To say it wasn't even close at all is ludicrous. IF that had been a Ravens player "switching" (you're right, it wasn't really juggling) the ball while going out of bounds, you would have been screaming at the TV set. Come on, admit it. It was a close call, but I agree the video evidence did not support overturning it.

Likewise, IF the ref had called it an incomplete pass, the video evidence would not have overturned that, either.

AND to be honest, the Patsies still had at least 2 or 3 more plays...and they would have scored a TD to Moss or Vrabel anyway! Moot point.

No you don't. Coaches haven't always been able to call timeouts so for years players were the ones who would call a timeout before a kick was attempted.

Are you sure? I am not talking about icing in general. I am talking about the very last moment TO being called so late that the players never get the message until after the play has begun. I am not saying you can prevent an attempt at icing the kicker. Also that is not what I am against. I am saying the very last second quietly-called TO just as the ball is snapped in order to kill the play but so late that none of the players have a chance to be informed and hence the ill-fated play starts anyway is wrong. If you remove the coach's ability to call a TO then someone on the field will have to call it. In this case a player is going to need to get out of position and ask for the TO. There is no way a player is going to wait until the split second before snap to do this. Sure they can still ice the kicker and that's fine but they aren't going to be able to fake the players into starting the play anyway.

I feel it won't be changed until someone gets hurt on a play that's been quietly called TO on.

OK, I admit it was a close call. But I firmly believe it was the right call! :partydance:

And I completely agree with the other posts about the stealth timeouts. Maybe it's allowed by the rules (for now) but it's still bush league.
