Don't you feel better now? So what do you think the odds of going 16-0 are?

Pittsburgh could be tough, but at least they are playing at home. Wonder if a hungry, but crappy team like the Jets or Dolphins (Giants in the playoff hunt?!) could knock them off. A few teams have exposed some weakness on defense and the offense isn't quite the juggernaut is was earlier...

The rule is simple, a timeout will be allowed if called and recognized before the snap.

And why is it bush league? An offense can line-up and have no intention in snapping the ball trying to get an offside penalty.

And straight to the point if it is NOT allowed... How do you enforce when a timeout is allowed other than the snap of the ball?!?!

The problem as I see it is there is a finite delay between the time someone calls a timeout and the players (even the refs not receiving the timeout signal) on the field can be notified. The current fad is to take advantage of this short window to call a timeout so that the play starts anyway only to be called back. Sure a penalty can have the same impact but a penalty is always self-imposed and self-inflicting. This trick is not. You don't have to change the rule or enforcement on when the timeout is allowed. Simply remove the ability for someone not involved in the play to call a timeout and you won't easily have the ability to take advantage of this window.

I think it's ultimately a fad that will backfire. Most of these kickers are professionals and for some, it gives them a practice kick to judge the wind, distance, etc. And for some, it gives them time to calm down.

For such a violent, brutal game, it does seem like kind of a desperate, whimpy move. Especially in the hands of a coach who doesn't know the rules :(

To be quite honest, I haven't been impressed with their play over the last month or so. I think their O-line has had some issues, their linebackers are looking old and slow, and I don't see the dominant D-line play that we've become accustomed to seing (where's Seymour? Hello? Are you out there?). :scaredhide:

I'm not buying into all of the ESPN/Fox/CBS hype--and that should mean something because they're selling it pretty hard. I would love to see them go undefeated and stop the '72 Dolphins' champagne celebration (urban legend, by the way, check out Snopes) but I think it will be very difficult. I could easily see them losing to the Steelers and a motivated Giants team. I don't see them losing to the Jets or Miami. So no matter what happens we'll get the #1 seed but unless they toughen up I wouldn't be surprised to see a physical team like Jax, Steelers or even the Colts beat them in the playoffs.

So maybe I'm biased, but I think you will agree that I'm no Homer and I'm not blind to their issues.

Very impressed and unlike the rabid college football and Skins fans around here! You were just blind on that bad call at the end of the game, that's all :notfunny:

Agree with your analysis. Things change in the winter. The Steeler's and Colts' ground games can be strong in bad weather.

Ravens players/fans are all crying about the refs helping the Pats win the game last night. From what I saw (and I am a Skins fan who was pulling for the Ravens), there were no bad calls, just bad luck for the Ravens (with the timeout call on 4th and 1, etc). Even if Gaffney's TD had been overruled, I think the Pats would have had 1st and goal at about the 1 as a result of the meltdown by the Ravens LB.

BTW, I don't like Belichick -- the ideal scenario for me would be to have the Pats go 16 and 0 and lose in the playoffs.

I hate the rule as well, but it paid off for both Denver (against Oakland) and Oakland (against Cleveland) -- in both cases, the kicker made the kick the first time, only to miss the re-kick -- earlier this year, so unless it is legislated out of the game it is going to be here to stay. How ironic was it for the Skins to even have 2 timeouts available at the end of the game when they have so often been without timeouts at the end of games this year (due to poor challenges and unnecessary timeouts being taken).

From my view through the TV set, the Ravens' timeout call wasn't any attempt at icing Brady on 4th and 1.. it looked like Brady was trying to sneak the 4th and 1 play in before Baltimore was ready.. Ryan called a timeout from the sidelines to prevent the sneak attack. Unfortunately the timeout negated a huge defensive play by the Ravens, the Ravens' D fell apart mentally, and the game was over at that point. Even though they still had a 3 point lead for the moment, everyone knew they had just lost the game.
