There are two Safeways in McLean. One is a Safeway International and the other is more in Pimmit Hills.

They can't build on land they don't own. Unless there's more land out there to buy (and buy up NOW, so they have the capacity to expand) the only way they could build is up.

Is that part of the concern?

Re: Settlement In HCA Health Fraud Probe

    Nothing more recent than 2003?

Just curious. Yes what you posted stands for itself, just interested if the pattern continues.

And... as I asked before... or did I? I forget... is there a fourth side to all this, an "Anti-HCA" side that doesn't care about the hospital being built, may care about the location of it, but definitely does NOT want HCA to build it?

I am more than happy to share the years of research I have on this topic. Some is in paperform and some I have electronically. ( my computer crashed so some things were lost) I put together a binder during the first 2 rounds of this that contain a lot of information that I am more than happy to let you borrow.

I have done some research Lee and as someone else posted, most of these occurred years ago under the leadership of then CEO, Richard Scott (fired in 1997). Even the more recently "settled" cases are from during his watch.

I doubt HCA is the only company who tries to avoid paying taxes. Hell, most Americans try! ;)

Wow Lee - Welcome to 4 years ago!

The reason you don't see these things discussed here is because we did this for 2+ years all before you were even registered here. Use the Search - you'll find thousands of posts all discussing the plans... HCA as a company... their history... everything.

The posters here aren't ignorant of the situation - they hashed this out for ages before you were even a member here. So please - if you want to go dig up old skeletons - use the Search and read to your hearts content first.

I think I should do that, too. I'll read thru the old threads and if I need more info from anyone I'll contact them via PM or whatever.

For what it's worth, I've no love for HCA as a company--pretty familiar having been employed by one of their competitors in a cutthroat market once upon a time. I had applied to work as a nurse at one of their hospitals, and they use Gallup to give their potential hires a questionnaire. The questionnaire results said that I wouldn't be a team player and recommended against hiring me. Several years later I went to school with the CNO of that hospital, told them about it, and she was stunned to find out that Gallup was preventing them from hiring nurses during a shortage. Fun stuff.

Thanks and Merry Christmas to everyone... and if you don't celebrate that, then Happy New Year. Good night.

    All,

Reality is we do not have the choice of "a fancy gardened office park"........

We need this hospital, and it will bring good things in the long term.

To me it is simple, what do we need more?

A hospital? Yes, another location would probably be better but that would mean significant additional years before completion.
    Or
Office space? Personally, I think there is already enough office space in NoVa unused!

Rich, you sound so sure of yourself...is it because you're involved with the health care industry? What good things will it bring our Broadland community in the long term? Could you offer some sound specifics, please?

I didn't know that living near a hospital would lower my home value.

This is a link to a satellite map view of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital.
    http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=38.884452,-77.379713&spn=0.00456,0.010149&t=h&z=17&om=1
The first thing I notice is that it is surrounded by single family homes in a residential environment similar to BRMC.

My next thought was to use Zillow to get an idea of how much these homes are worth - after all these residential single family homes must be worth nothing since they are so close to a hospital.

Here is a Zillow link to some homes that are directly across the street from Inova Fair Oaks hostpital
    http://www.zillow.com/search/RealEs...263!Ae:AN77381709!An:38885557)&mode=(zoom:18))

The prices seem pretty similar to comparable homes in the area that are not even near the hospital.

There are some homes that back directly to the hospital that were there before Inova Fair Oaks was built in 1987. I tried using Zillow to get a history of these home sales for these homes but it seemed they only went back to 2002.

Anyone have easy access to this information? It could provide some concrete evidence of a hospital lowering (or possibly raising) home values.

There was an article in the WSJ a few months ago about the accuracy of zillow and it was spotty at best in this fast down turning market. I would like to see what they get now that the hospital has ripped a bunch off the buffer down in their expansion. I think I will have my real estate agent wife do a search on listings and sales around hospitals and ask her real estate co workers what they think about the effect on home prices will be around the broadlands hospital if built.

Ummm, I said "SOME PARTS OF MCLEAN". One in the town center and one on 123 toward Tysons. The REST of McLean is untouched by any such development. I was being illustrative of how each community must set its own standards. I was trying to illustrate that that there are many areas in McLean that would not allow stores that we would NOT find objectionable in our neighborhood. But some neighborhoods might even welcome a new casino, but I don't think that we would. I was drawing a picture of the spectrum of communities and how each does (and should?) create its own standards, and not buckle to the pressure of powerful companies just because they want to use your backyard.

    Can I ask a question?

I have been to the emergency room at the Landsdown Hospital twice, and never had a problem with service. I have lived in many areas of the country, both in rural (NH) and urban (Hartford/Boston/St Louis) areas, and never seen a less busy waiting room. Maybe it is my timing, and obviously it is a small sampling, but I haven't seen the kind of hectic, overworked emergency rooms that I have seen in other parts of the country.
