To sum it up, I guess I am one of those people who still think it is a tremendous accomplishment to make it to any championship game. I find it puzzling that many teams who make it to a championship but lose, OSU being the latest example, is often ridiculed, belittled, and even mocked for losing. It is a shame that the one loss, albeit in a much publicized game, is the only thing that defines that particular team. Will the Patriots suffer the same fate if they lay an egg in the super bowl?

I am proud of the Buckeyes for making it into back-to-back NC games even when this was supposed to be a rebuilding year. For me:

"It is better to have played in the NC game and lost than to have never played at all"

Yes, the Patriots' season will have been a bust if they have a "perfect season," but do not win the Super Bowl. The only thing that matters in professional sports is winning it all.

I agree, especially regarding college sports. It's a great accomplishment. But to be honest, the reason I have chosen to mock and make light of OSU's loss is not the team--it's the overbearing, insufferable OSU fans that pop up all over touting their greatness.

There are certain teams whose fans get a little too full of themselves. And maybe it's a personal thing, but after living in 8 cities and working in 8 different companies, a pattern emerged. Ohio State Fans are usually obnoxious! There are other teams as well, but that's why I did take some delight in seeing OSU lose again :)

And yes, my team sucks and is so mediocre we shouldn't even be in a Bowl game. But at least I know that.

Oh, the other reason many of us have mocked OSU is that we actually wanted to see a competitive NC game. Personally, I thought USC and Georgia ended the year on a hot streak and would have rather seen one of those teams fighting in the final game.

But if you do something like that it simply negates the entire regular season. There has to be consequences for losing during the regular season.

I would love to see a playoff as much as anyone else and let the polls/computers figure out the top 8 or whatever, but it just ain't gonna happen.

In leiu of that, I would also like to see a 2-3 week layoff instead of almost 2 months!

I don't think it negates the entire season, I think it calls for polls that reflect who the best teams are at any given time...not who has the fewest losses or who lost when or who arbitrarily began the season far up or way down.

In mid-November, who were the two best teams in the country? Anyway, I agree it isn't going to happen. And yes, the 6-8 week layoff makes it a joke.

    You are kidding right?

So with your logic, USC and Georgia could have lost a couple more games each early in the season as long as they were "best teams" in November.

Polls are suppose to represent teams "body of work" (i.e their seasons), not just the last month.

Seems like I missed a lot of dialog while on travel the last two days. I've got no comment other than I liked the outcome

You should. LSU earned it. Other than the initial onslaught by the Buckeyes, LSU played a very solid game.

It was good to finally see everyone healthy again and in the form they displayed for the first half of the season.

    Don't pity me. I didn't play 1 down in that game! :D

Besides, I have the Red Sox to fall back on and baseball has always been my first love!

I bet you probably feel like it though. For some reason I cant just see you being able to watch the game sitting down the whole time.

I bet you were jumping up and down, pacing around and screaming at the TV.

Might be more physically active than a kicker!

In truth, 1986 cured most of the raving sports lunatic in me. When the sox lost in game 6 I had a collectors beer stein that I had poured my beer into. When the blew it the stein went in to the brick fireplace.

I still root hard for my teams and can get riled up but I am somewhat zen about it now. 2004 World Series went along way in helping that too.

Unfortunately for Penn State, a lot of teams did better than Penn State. [IMG]

Well Buckeye fans, the good part about this thread is that we will probably be having the same discussions this time next year! ;) :D

But we will have at least beaten USC during the regular season.

Not that this disagrees with your comment, but I was surprised at the quantities.

    ----
More Tigers to Play in Super Bowl XLII Than Any Other School
LSU will have five of its former football players on the field for Super Bowl XLII when the New England Patriots face the New York Giants on Feb. 3 in Phoenix, the most active players of any NCAA school.

In all, 20 former SEC players will take part in the contest. Outside of LSU, Tennessee is next with four participants, followed by Auburn, Georgia and Florida with two each.

Southern Cal and Marshall have four alumni on the active rosters -- each has a player on either injured reserve or a practice squad -- while the University of Miami (Fla.) has three players on active rosters -- plus two on the Giants' injured reserve and one on the Patriots' practice squad.

Guess it just depends on who is playing in the SB. :D

For active NFL rosters in 2007:
By conference, SEC had the most players at 263, with ACC = 238 and Big 10 = 234 and a big drop to the PAC 10 = 183.

By Team, Miami leads the way with 46, Ohio State = 44, Florida State = 43, Tenn = 36 and LSU = 33.

So are you saying that OSU can put up a lot of talent, but just can't win championships (NCAA, NFC, AFC)?

    2002 isn't that long ago!

And to be FAIR, next time LSU and OSU play for the NC, have the game in Cleveland! :D
