A good friend/co-worker of mine is in a real pinch trying to find childcare for her 6 month old. She and her husband had hired an nanny however the nanny just went AWOL last week leaving them without any childcare. She just returned to work from maternity leave at the beginning of this month and does not have any vacation left to use. Right now her husband is taking off work when he can and her parents are coming down from PA regularly to watch the baby.

Does anyone know of any information I could send her way to help in her desperate search to find new childcare? They are open to a live-out nanny, in home childcare, or a daycare center. They live in Sterling and work in Reston so anything in those areas would be idea.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I am sure she has considered being a stay at home mom or working out of her home. Maybe she should reconsider. This situation happened to me! For me it was God's way of telling me I needed to be the primary caregiver. Maybe this is the same in your friend's situation!

    Quailpond,
My daughter attend the Kindercare (it was Mulberry then) at Isaac Newton Square in Reston. She started there when she was two but one of her classmates had two younger siblings who were in the infant rooms and his parents were pleased.

Unfortunately, due to mortgage costs, it has to be a two income family. Plus, our company is not flexible with working from home.

You've got to be kidding me. This was a post about looking for childcare, not a bashing against working moms.

Wow, Disney, that's pretty darn close to the line, if not over it. The post asked for help finding childcare. That was NOT an opportunity for you to make a thinly veiled advocacy statement for being a stay-at-home mom. Mom's that work full time outside the home can decipher these kinds of statements pretty quickly.

and unless God is paying their mortgage- it simply may not be an option. we make choises and sacrifices that fit our lives, and NO ONE can know what that is but the person in question. i AM going to leave it alone now since T8 and luft said all that needs to be said about it, so hopefully this thread can continue on about its true need.

    that said- http://www.dcnanny.com/whyus.html
please make sure she doesn't just go off of a first impression of the person- and speaks with at least TWO families the nanny has worked for. i have friends who have liked a nanny on site, hired her, checked references AFTERWARDS and been told awful things about the nannies behavior, organization, attention to the children, etc. there are wonderful people out there to help your friend care for her children, she just has to put in the work to find them. :)

    best of luck to her!

just like some moms have no choice but to work, some have no choice but to stay home. if i complained about not having any money, would it be a viable suggestion to get a job? sure, but not a viable reality for me. we love disney was nice about her thoughts. it was only a thought and probably her first thought since it worked out for her.
being a mom is tough, any way you slice it. let's be nice to all of them.

Yes, she was nice. But she also attempted to apply "her" values and situation where they may not have necessarily been wanted or needed.

I also do not think that We Love Disney was being condescending or malicious in her tone. Probably just offering her own personal experience of what worked for her. This is a sensitive subject and some working Moms are easily offended so opinions must be carefully worded. It is a hard decision for many families and it really is a shame that the housing costs of this area prohibit staying home for some Moms who'd like to otherwise. Each family has its own PERSONAL reasons on what works best for them.

How about looking into an aupair? I know that they are not as expensive as some people think...I guess that is a Nanny still, but since they are from a different country I think that there may be more staying points. There are a few Au Pair agancies out there- I know of Cultural Care Au Pair, Chi Au Pair....hm, I am sure they are more too!! Good luck!!

Thanks for your response! Good news: My friend found in-home day care in Reston/Herndon that had an opening and her little boy is trying it out this week! They are soooo hoping that this works out and I'm sure it'll bring them much relief if it does!

I had suggested an au pair, but my friend doesn't have room in the house to accomodate one. I, however, will most likely be looking into one whenever we have a second child. Paying for one in daycare is ok, but two is ridiculous....of course, by the time we have another one, the first one will need to be in pre school so I guess that's be au pair/nanny/in-home care for one + pre school for the other. LOL!
