If it were me, I would definitely do a full scan on my computer with for antivirus and spyware first, just to rule out anything ugly going on. I hope you're able to get Firefox up and running because I really think it's worth it. It's a great program with wonderful add-ons for eliminating advertising and pop-ups. I love it! Good luck!

After several days of great system stability, I finally tried Firefox again today. Lo and behold, it did the same thing as before :( This time I was able to use the "Remove" option to uninstall it.

When you properly uninstall it, a why-did-you-uninstall survey from Mozilla pops up in I.E. Once I filled and submitted it, I was able to see comments from other users who had uninstalled. Lots of griping about system instability with the new version, with many users saying they'd just go back to 2.0 (as Neilz had suggested earlier). Soooooo, I tried installing that version. The install hadn't even finished when the computer just rebooted itself.

I think my days of fighting with Firefox are over, at least until I get a new system. It's supposed to be so much more stable than Netscape, but I rarely had issues with Navigator (and certainly nothing as severe as totally crashing the system!). How about Flock?

When a system 'randomly' reboots like yours is doing, that to me points directly to a hardware issue. I seriously doubt Firefox is causing this.

Flock is based on the older Firefox engine. You can give it a try, but it's mostly geared towards folks who blog a lot.

You 'could' try Opera, but it's definitely not my pick when it comes to browsers...

Honestly, I would look and try to find out what is causing your system instability issues. Normal software doesn't just reboot your computer for the hell of it, especially well written code like what is found in Firefox today... If you ask me, it's either a hardware issue on your end, or your Windows install is messed up somehow...

    Sorry!

Just doesn't feel all that random to me when the only application that's ever done this is Firefox. And once I got it uninstalled the first time, XP was completely stable until I tried it again. I saw several other comments about 3.0 causing system crashes and rebooting when I submitted that survey, so I don't feel quite as alone in this as before. :)

That being said -- due to my extreme stubbornness, I gave 2.0 one more shot. So far so good, although 3.0 worked fine until I decided to reboot, and then everything went south. Looks like I can't get the backed-up bookmarks from 3.0 to appear in 2.0, unfortunately :(

Did you by chance install any Firefox addons/plugins?

Anytime. Wonder if it could be a very poorly coded Firefox addon that you have installed. Even if you installed it in version 2, it will migrate to the new version, if it's compatible.

    Hmmmm, almost 12:40am... you're a night owl like me, I see :)

Night shift for 10 years now, can't help it! If the weather toolbar was an add-on, then I did, but that was it. And now that you mention it, it's there at the bottom of the browser in this version, too.

Hmmm, I wonder if the addon could be causing an issue... Might be something to 'test' when you have some free time. Maybe try uninstalling it, move to 3.0, etc...

Of course, if everything is stable right now, I would suggest that you don't mess with it until it starts acting up again.

That's the plan, along with continuing to shop for a new system :) Thanks again for your assistance!

Success!! I just had to reboot due to a Media Center issue, and Firefox came up without a hitch.

Great movie, notwithstanding the really cheesy flying special effects.
