My husband and I are planning a mid-December trip to ski in Canada. Does anyone have any recommendations/thoughts as to Banff/Lake Louise/Whistler? Which is best for a 5 night stay? Has anyone been to any of these?

I have cousins who live in Vancouver and we've visited them several times, I totally recommend Whister! It's awesome. Can't recommend any lodging tho since we stay with them. You really can't go wrong with any of those areas! The Canadian Rockies are spectacular! HAVE FUN!

We were in Whistler this summer - kind of a "side trip." We didn't have reservations, but stopped by the visitor's center. Their central reservations systems had a "sweetheart deal" and we got a room at the Fairmount Chateau Whistler for $115 a night. As I understood it, they have different deals, different times. Here's the website: http://www.whistler.com/

I've been to both. In mid-December the snow can still be a bit wet in Whistler; you'd probably only be skiing half the mountain downloading at the midstation. 99% of the time, that time of year, Banff has better snow.

Whistler has fantastic nightlife if that's important to you. Banff isn't bad, Lake Louise is non-existant. Depends on how busy or quiet you want it.

Banff is an easy insterstate drive from Calgary. Whistler is not a long way from Vancouver, and the Sea to Sky highway is gorgeous, but can be a little scary with all the twists and turns and nutty drivers.

Whistler, by far is the best place. I have been there numerous times and it always is better than the time before.

Thanks for all the advice. I hadn't thought about the possibility of wetness at Whistler and the better snow early in the season at Banff. I think we'll try there.

I grew up skiing at Whistler and while I LOVE it (actually I prefer Blackcomb) it's usually pretty wet that early. But who knows... sometimes they get lucky!

If you go to Banff, you can always buzz over to Lake Louise too. Ski, see the lake which is an unbelievable shade of blue.

As for lodging, I've stayed here: http://www.crmr.com/buffalo-mountain-lodge.php

It's really neat, but not right IN town. It will require you to drive a short distance to head in for dinner, shopping, whatever.

What you really need to do is donate the money to your neighbors so that they can have a nice vacation. After all these years of pretending to be your friends, it's the least you could do.
