From my townhouse window I can see the tunnel on the path leading to Hillside that goes under Claiborne. Seen this several times before over the years, and again this morning. At about 7:20 2 boys decided to run across the road instead of taking the tunnel 20 feet in front of them. Their path pretty much took them directly above the tunnel.

This time, however, the police were there looking for speeders. An officer got out of the cruiser and ran over to give the little jaywalkers a stern talking to.

So if you have 2 older boys that left for Hillside this morning at about 7:20 taking the tunnel you might want to ask them if they had a visit with the law this morning. :policelight:

i have seen several speeding stops and am SO glad the montior that area more closely now.

I agree, people blow through that school zone daily. And to the gentleman who gave me the finger and yelled FU at me for letting him know he just went through the 25 zone going 50, I hope you get caught next time...

While I was out walking today, I was thinking about this post. That tunnel makes me a little claustrophobic, even in the middle of the day. I just get this image of someone coming from behind me and who knows what... I know it's not realistic at all, but still.

Maybe one of the kids wasn't comfortable walking in the tunnel? Granted, they should have at least walked down to the Waxpool/Claiborne or Claiborne/Broadlands Blvd. intersection to cross with the light. Just throwing it out there.

Me too - tunnels scare me - you can't tell who/what is waiting at the other end...

There is a reason they are always filled with graffiti

    (admittedly paraniod)

It is kinda isolated and out of view of the roadway. I can imagine someone being attacked in the tunnel would be hard pressed to get help. :(

Yes in the daytime! It may be light on either side of the tunnel, but the middle is just dark enough to invoke all those paranoid fears. Plus, I can't tell if the noise I heard behind me is an echo from my shoes or...

Crazy, I know. Some things just can't be reasoned and rationalized away.

Apparently those same 2 boys didn't learn their lesson from the sheriff the other day. They ran across Claiborne just a few minutes ago.

I make 4 trips a day through that tunnel and have never had an issue.

after watching The Brave One I also thought about that passing the tunnel. but i bet the chances of getting smacked by a car on Claiborne are greater than getting smacked around in the tunnel...

Wow - I think people around here watch too much CSI or whatever all those shows are..personally I stick to sitcoms or HGTV or read. This really surprises me living here in Broadlands.....I've live here in Ashburn since 1988...never been afraid to walk by myself even in the dark....but that's me.

This morning we were headed out around 9am and there was a young-ish couple crossing Claiborne basically RIGHT ON TOP OF THE TUNNEL pushing a jogging stroller. Okay. You're grownups. Cross the road. I'm fine with that. But maybe, just maybe, have some sense of urgency in actually getting across the road! These two were walking like they were underwater. Yeesh!!!

Yeah, this freaked me out when I was driving to work on Thursday morning. It was like 6 a.m. and pitch black dark along the street. As someone else pointed out, I was distracted by coffee and whatever else as I drove south on Claiborne. Suddenly there was a couple of adults jay-walking across the street in front of me in the darkness and I had to slam on the brakes. This happened like a hundred feet from the tunnel, and I couldn't understand why they didn't just take the tunnel. I mean, (a) it was a couple, so it's not like a single person who would be afraid of being in the tunnel alone, (b) there are LIGHTS in the tunnel. If they planned to be crossing the street when it was dark out, at least they could have worn some light colored or reflective clothing.
