I agree Ozgood...dogs really do have a sense and if our dog doesn't like whomever is at the door...well...that's it.

I kinda hope he comes by my house with his kid. I know a lot of people get aggravated by these guys but I find them amusing sometimes. Especially ones like this guy and the guys coming around to sell me their religions. If I'm not doing anything pressing I like to talk to them sometimes just to see how good their game is.

Have some fun with them! If life throws you lemon salesmen, make some lemonade!

Or just tell them to go away. That's fine, also :)

Normally I would agree with you Jax.

In addition to my dog, I had a "bad feeling" about this guy. My inner dog was telling me that there was someting "not quite right". I have learned to trust my inner dog in these situtations.

I wonder if this guy is casing houses for either break-ins or home invasions? :(

These days, unfortunately, I tend to assume the worst until evidence is presented otherwise.

I really really hope this guy was just a poor salesman with poor customer attitudes.

A way to gauge his legitimacy would be to compare notes on what he has used as his opening line with everyone.

With me it was the sob story about getting blown off by a customer with whom he had an appointment, and then lamenting about how he wanted to unload the steaks he had so that he didn't have to make a trip up to Purcellville.

Did he use this quite suspicious opener (or one almost like it) with any of you?

Post #36 describes our experience with this guy to a "T"! Almost everything was word for word. My wife was really mad when he ended with "Thanks for not helping me..." and walked off.

Did he ring your doorbell as he left in a huff? Maybe he just did that to me since I had a sign right over it noting I had a sleeping baby and specifically asking people to NOT ring the bell.

No, my wife stood at the door in awe after his very rude comment as he just turned his back and walked away. She tried to get his attention again to tell him that was inappropriate behavior...my wife was very politely refusing to buy his meat. He couldn't take "No Thank You" for an answer.

    Did you buy a steak?

You're probably right. Now if it was just painted the right color.... :)

Back to the PSS; he it does not sit well with me that he brings the child to the door with him. I personally prefer to donate to the National Down Syndrome Society and know that my contribution goes to a worthy cause (and tax deduction bonus). There is just too much unknown with this guy. When the high school kids, local girlscouts, and local boyscouts come to the door I always donate something (even if small like $10-$15). I am all for people trying to make a living and becoming successful, but there must be a more appropriate way to do it.

Mrs. Goofus heard a disturbing story from our neighbor. I would prefer not to get into the details here, but let's just say that the pushy steak salesman's caustic comments had a threatening edge to them that was quasi-related to the words highlighted above. I seriously don't think he meant anything by it (other than to heighten the nastiness of his already nasty tone), so I really don't believe that he is actually casing houses. He was merely making one in a long series of unwelcome and mean-spirited remarks.

One thing's for sure... he's a very disturbed individual who cannot take no for an answer.

in THIS case I would have definitely called the non emergency nmbr to get it on file that these remarks were made. NOTHING should be taken lightly these days. just b/c he's been around before, is traveling with a child, and shilling meat doesn't make him any less suspicious than group of young men walking down the street looking thuggish and suspicious in baggy clothes. why hesitate on a clearly "disturbed individual" who rings bells and dries around the hood all day?

i am NOT saying this man IS a criminal, but he clearly is presenting a negative element, and how much rejection can he take in this neighborhood before it might result in retaliation?

LET THE COPS KNOW Mrs. Goofus- the last thing we want to show up in this thread is that the steak man assaulted someone or worse.

When does it cross the line and become harassment? Or, trespassing?

its not tresspassing unless the property is marked, or if you ask them to leave and they do not.

A guy was around our neighborhood selling steak today. What does the guy you all saw look like? I don't know if it was the same one, but it seems likely. I don't think he came to our door but when we were leaving a neighbor's house he asked us if we wanted any meat and my husband said no. The guy went on about his business.

A few hours later I saw him again and this time I called the non-emergency sheriff's number and they said they would send someone around to check it out. I don't know if he was legitimate or not but he wasn't wearing a badge on a lanyard to show that he was a licensed solicitor.

Not sure if its the same guy or not.. have to check his card but we ordered a box. And to be honest it was pretty good too. I think the guys name was rick? Drove a white pickup with a freeze in the back? we got a box because we were throwing a bbq and it was a good deal. Everyone enjoyed the steaks all was well.

Dunno maybe we got it from a different guy but he seemed ok. Was a bit pushy but it worked out ok.
