While it is true that many cars these days are capable of receiving the Sirius service, I wonder how many people actually subscribe?

Perhaps a quick poll of our members might garner some useful data?

How many people here subscribe to Sirius?

    I don't

I subscribe to XM Radio in my car, and I have a 2nd XM Receiver that my wife uses in her car. I can't imagine going back to terrestrial radio.

One of their primary distribution channels is new car sales. It may actually be the primary distribution channel. As we all know, new car sales are in the toilet, so their new subcriptions are off significantly and not looking to pick up soon.

This is an example of the ripple effect that we will see if the US auto makers do not figure out to be competitive in the auto market. There will be thousands of companies negatively affected if the US auto makers fail.

I hate the audio quality of sat radio... it's horrible. It's like listening to a 64k mp3 (high treble freqs suck). I have a HD radio and it's pretty nice, but not nearly the selection of satellite. XM/Sirius need to turn down their compression and it would be listenable.

Sat Radio is AWESOME! I have been a Sirius subscriber for several years and have two radios, one in my wife's car and a portable that i use in my car, in the house, and on walks. NFL Radio is my favorite station along with CNBC so I can get even more depressed about our economy...and music galore!

although i AM disappointed in their new line up- they changed cetain stations to the XM format which i HATED. osbscure, lousy songs on the 80's station, no more Movin' Easy... they got an earful from me and actually responded that they will bring back a classic soft rock station. POWER TO THE PEOPLE! Fanilows, fans of the Carpenters, Loggins and Messina, Dan Folgelberg and Bread- we WILL have our station back. :)

yeah, not a big fan of the new lineup either, but they had so many synergies and had to make cuts. Movin' Easy was a great station. I also think the old Kid's Stuff was better than Kid's Place (or whatever 116 is now). It'll just take some getting use to. I found a bunch more music stations that I added to my presets and have been sampling. There's still a lot of great stations.

I've got it in one car. Not a big fan as I like the line up on my iPod better. It's strictly a backup.

Funny, I was annoyed with XM for getting rid of some of its channels and replacing them with Sirius ones. So, I don't want to hear any bellyaching from all you Sirius folks, OK! :)

I think there is a lot of overlap between the channels that each "company" replaced--it's just a matter of finding the new channel that is most comparable to the one that was replaced. There's probably not a big difference between either company's lineups--we just get used to certain things and don't like change I guess...

XM is about $13 a month for the first receiver, and about $7 a month for each additional receiver.

Ditto! I can't find anything any more!!!! :angryfire:

We've had XM in the house and the cars for a few years now. I never listen to regular radio any more.

True, if you are paying month-to-month, but prepaying for 2-3 years at a time will save you a lot. For instance I have 3 years on both my radios and I think I'm averaging about $14/mo. If you can afford the up front cost, it does save you money in the long-run.

What happens if your receiver dies? Can you add a new one to your account and take off the old one?

One reason I never purchased the "lifetime" membership for my Tivo's is the concern that if the Tivo died and needed to be replaced I'd be SOL. Plus I don't like the idea of paying so far in advance in case the company goes bankrupt.

$13 a month just to listen to the radio is a bit much for me.

But if it gives you what you are looking for, I guess it is worth it

If I were using it simply for listening to music I'd agree with you, but I like being able to listen to ESPN Radio, CNN, BBC, every single MLB baseball game, etc. whenever I want. I pretty much live on ESPN Radio and CNN.

And if you drive outside your local radio area you never have to worry about finding a "new" channel as the old ones lose reception. If you've ever driven on I-85 between the DC area to the Raleigh area and tried to find a decent radio station you might be able to appreciate satellite radio. An MP3 player/iPod will give you similar flexibility, but doesn't give you the news stations.
