Not sure what they are called, but they are wooden, have two wheels, but no pedals. Kids propel themselves and learn to balance.

Friends in the hood have them but are still using them.

Sorry I do not that I have one for sale, but I can certainly vouch for their effectiveness... I swear by their success in helping kids learn to ride. There is basically no such thing as training wheels on our block. There is no need for them. Kids go from using this to riding a bike... very easy transition and logical progression. Here is a link to a nice product as a sample.

They are called 'Like-a-Bikes' - http://store.likeabikeusa.com/. We have one that our oldest wouldn't use. We're holding onto it, as our youngest is a bit more brave and should get good use from it. My brother lives in NYC and his kid used it to scoot around the city - she was able to cruise for 10-15 feet at a time without touching the ground. It's a great trainer for balance, preparing kids for a real bike. The real ones are pretty expensive ($200-$300), but there are cheaper versions at Target that should work just as well.

I wanted to revive this post because Costco recently started selling these and it is a great product. http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?Prodid=11292110

If you kid is learning to ride a bike, 2-5 years old this is the greatest way to do it and you will never need training wheels. Do not buy a regular bike for the first learning process, they are too heavy and training wheels do no good in helping them learn. I watched my little guy learn on this and in a matter of 2 weeks, all on his own he was able to just figure it out and ride a pedal bike with no help at all. It was amazing to watch.

This seems like a real "common sense" approach to teach kids to ride a bike.

    What a clever idea :)

I can highly recommend them!!! My kids are too old now but I wish they would have been on the market in the U.S. when my kids were younger. Over here in Germany I see 3 year old kids racing down the walkways with them. They have been a big hit here for many years. Get them a helmet with the bike because they learn quick and get fast!
