    Fellow Foodies--

First of all, we hope "y'all" had a blessed Holiday season and Happy New Year!

Today, when I was in the Chantilly area (where I met my hubby and his friends from work for lunch), I noticed that Lotte Plaza is opening a NEW Asian market on Metrotech Drive. Lotte's new store (store in Fairfax is still open) will be at the OLD Hechinger's and FORMER Lowe's location at Sully Plaza. Shoppers Food Warehouse fronts Route 50 and Lotte Plaza is behind Shoppers grocery. Apparently, Lotte is still renovating the store. According to Lotte's web site, the location will open in 2009.

    Web site is below--

    www.lotteplaza.com (Lotte Plaza's site/info.)

Personally, when we shop for Asian foods, we prefer Super Hmart in Fairfax for their variety of Asian food and produce. Sometimes I order from other Asian markets online. If any one you are interested, I can PM or post my resource online sources.

On a sidenote, recently we returned from our vacation over the holidays from FLA and PA. In visiting some of our relatives at their farms, I mentioned that some people in VA might be interested in their produce products. When I brought back recently the Nittany apples and other produce from my uncle's farm and our farm, I donated it for FREE. We were happy to do so. In talking to my uncle and aunt, they told us that if you wished apples, etc., they would have to charge for bushels (which is usually a case) of apples or other produce to help offset their own costs.

If you are interested, I will be happy to post a SEPARATE thread, the info and the prices my uncle would charge. The produce is great and apples are still available, I believe. Just PM me if interested. I would deliver the food perhaps at the Community Center instead of the Nature Center (after I check with Maureen that way she would not be inconvenienced!:)).

Thanks again and have a good week. Boy, are we glad to be home.

    Foodie & Family:)

I called Lotte's today and the clerk told me that their NEW store in Chantilly, VA will open on 02/20/09, Friday. Lotte's is about the size of the Hmart stores about 40-50,000 square feet. Not quite as large as Hmart's SuperHmart in Fairfax.

So just thought I would tell "y'all"--

I noticed this last week when I had to go to the party store in that plaza. I am SO excited. I used to go to the one in Fairfax circle, but that is too far a drive for me now. The produce is fresh and very inexpensive. Can't wait to get more tofu. I think the tofu is much better than the store packaged kind and cheaper. Fries better too :p

    Fellow Foodies--

Update on Grand Opening of New Lotte Plaza has been scheduled to open Friday, March 6, 2009. I stopped by there today and spoke to one of their store managers; and she told us that they will open on March 6, 2009. Great looking store over 75,000 square feet of space from what she said.

    Have a good week--

    Foodie,
    Thanx for the update.

On as similar topic, does anyone know what (if anything) is going in place of the Ashburn Shoppers? The owner of another store in that strip mall said that "ther is a 99% chance that a GrandMart will come there soon." Unfortunately, he refused to give any more detais/info..I am hoping someone on this forum might have more information..

Would there actually be a market for a GrandMart in that area?

The Grandmart in Steling (across from the Shoppers no less) gets a lot of Middle Eastern and Hispanic traffic as well as the occasional Asian (me!) so I think there's definitely a market.

There probably is - I havent done any research on it but its just based on al the traffic that I see in the Sterling Grand Mart. That's were we get most of our grocery from - the prices r comparable, they have more variety and it is fresh. Especially the seafood - I dont know of any other non-Asian food store near by(GrandMart, Super H, Lotte) where u can get live fish & blue crabs! They also have a lot of variety to boot.

In my opinion, Super H Mart is tops (on Lee Hwy. in Fairfax), followed by Hanna Reum (Falls Church), and Grand Mart is my last choice in terms of quality.

    PowerPlay and others--

When we were at the Chantilly Lotte Plaza recently, the store manager told us that the new store is larger than Super Hmart by about 15,000 square feet--75,000 (Lotte) to 60,000 (Super Hmart).

In the Gwinnett County, GA area where we are from, there is a large Asian population. Super Hmart has 2 new stores built within the last few years as well as Lotte's. Beautiful stores almost the size of Wegmans--

There is also a Chinese Asian market, I believe, Great Wall supermarket on Gallows Road near the new Merrifield Town Center (Falls Church area). Has anyone ventured to this Chinese store? From reading food blogs and/or reviews online, consumers seem to like Super Hmart in Fairfax the best.

Lotte's Plaza in Chantilly will be some good competition for Super Hmart.

    Thanks,

Great Wall is not bad, most of their products are Chinese/Vietnamese vs. Korean such as their roasted meat section in the back (duck, pork, chicken). Their selection of fruits and vegetables are not as varied as Super H-Mart but they are reasonably priced. In the seafood dept., they have live shrimp occasionally as well as different types of crabs in addition to lobsters and fish. They are a chain as well with stores in NY, NJ, and MA. When Lotte at Fairfax Circle was the only game in town, it was impressive. Since these other stores have opened, I have never been back so hopefully they can do better with the new store.

Don't forget to check out the Grand Opening of the new Lotte Plaza store on 03/06/09! The store opens at 9 am and closes at 10 pm. The store will have its ad posted on their web site and sales starts on Fridays and runs through Thursdays, I believe.

Who know we may see "y'all"! We are shopping at Lotte's early in the AM to beat the crowds! Have fun--

    Fellow Foodies--

We went to the NEW Lotte's Plaza today in Chantilly, VA this morning. It is a beautiful and open store--also very clean! The seafood and fish market is a wide-open place with plenty of space to shop.

The produce sections has some great buys for their Grand Opening from 03/06/09 to 03/12/09. Check out the online ad on their web site. Of course, it was a little crazy this morning; but quick and friendly service! Our kids loved it and the samples of food.

Their Food Court is not yet fully open yet. They do have a Korean restaurant and a Chinese restaurant in their Food Court area. It is kinda like a "Mini Korean Mall". Lotte's does not have the Korean Fried Chicken like the Hmart and Super Hmart stores.

Also, in the frozen foods area, Lotte's doesn't offer quite as many Asian ice cream choices as Super Hmart in Fairfax. For example, the Red Bean, Mango, Green Tea, and Plum (and other varieties of ice cream and mochi ice creams) are not as plentiful at Lotte's like the Hmart and Super Hmart stores. Lotte's does have a decent selection of ice cream novelties though.

Sushi is also available. They have a good looking Korean bakery and kimchi bar. Seafood counter is great and meats looked good.

They also have great International and Asian products. Grains, sauces, Asian rice products, etc. Produce prices are great for this week.

    Good eats--
