I agree -- this would alleviate a lot of the congestion in the morning. LCP/Waxpool is the chokepoint for traffic -- once you get past this intersection things open up. Giving traffic from NB LCP a way to turn right continuously would help speed things up a lot.

The reason waxpool does open up is because of the 3rd lane. Long before LCP was the funnel of traffic it is now... waxpool needed that 3rd lane. Taking it away again will just shift the traffic backup from LCP back over to waxpool again.

The backup on LCP is not bad - you get through in usually 2 cycles at nearly all times of the morning. If you can't wait 2-3 cycles... try getting up earlier.

Actually I think if you allowed LCP to turn easily without a green, you could lengthen the green cycle for Waxpool, reducing congestion on Waxpool. I agree that the backup on Waxpool is worse than on LCP. If I remember correctly, there are only 2 through lanes approaching the intersection on waxpool, so the third lane past the intersection is underutilized. That's why I think it would be useful to make that into a merge lane for LCP traffic.

It's not underutilized... it's what frees up the traffic on waxpool past LCP you initially noted. It's the reason you have that opening up :)

The reality of the situation is LCP has gotten significantly more volume due to it finally connecting places and actually being a through road. Waxpool remains the only east/west route for the entire area besides Rt 7 way to the north.. or the Greenway.

Given both these roads were always envisioned to be this way - the moronic thing is treating Waxpool like a private driveway over these years.. adding new cuts and new lights on a whim rather then funneling traffic into existing intersections and optimizing the lights.

Traffic could still use the third lane, just shortly after the LCP intersection.

I think it would make a lot of sense to make the third lane on Waxpool at LCP be for right turns from LCP. That, coupled with shortening the cycle for WB Waxpool traffic turning onto LCP south could ease some of the congestion there. Naturally, you would have to retime the downline lights to keep traffic flowing.

too late.. since they just did the opposite and made the 3rd lane a straight through on waxpool by taking away one of the turn lanes from Wax-E to LCP-North.

Gee, you take a day off from work and they reroute traffic patterns on you!
