It's too bad the one by Wegmans can't stay open a little longer. I would imagine that as the weather warms up many mommies will be (or would have been) getting their latte fix while the kids play on the playground.

Well, let's see - There are about 260 Starbucks locations within a 20-mile radius of downtown D.C. (From the Business Journal) and that averages out to 13 per square mile.

A 20-mile radius would equal more like 1256 sq miles so it's really just under 5 starbucks per square mile, not 13. However that's still too many if you ask me. I wonder how many are in a 30-mile radius as that should include the 5 stores in or within a mile of Broadlands and I imagine many many others.

Starting to wonder about the schools here. 260 stores / 1256 sq miles = .2 stores / sq mile or about 1 store every 5 sq miles.

Not familiar with Amenity, but I like the stylists at Modern Concepts. The two owners are the head stylists and are excellent. There's always a fun atmosphere, they mentor their staff and I've not once left there feeling I needed to hurry home and restyle.

Yes that hit me after I left home and was expecting to come back to be busted. I was hoping it would just slip by. I did the math right to get the 1:5 ratio but then reversed the numbers when I composed the post.

Personally while I know many of you think we have too many Starbucks, I think it's a stupid business move to close the one in Southern Walk. It's right off the highway and as soon as the entire road opens, that will be a major area. Why not close the one by the Safeway? There is already one in Safeway (true it's not the same) but there is another one located at the very next shopping center. Crazy. The Southernwalk Shopping center is going to hurt if you are not Walgreen's or Harris Teeter. I expect we will see the closing of American flatbread and Glory Days at some point as well. To me, Starbucks was a draw there.

i'm no fan of starbux- but i agree- where is there another walking distance bucks for Southern Walkers? and the neighborhood with the road plowing thru it soon- Vantage Point (off of Ryan Road) would also likely make that bux a spot to walk to...

It's all about visibility and traffic. The problem with the Southern Walk plaza is that, other than Southern Walk residents, nobody sees it or knows about it. There is no business community to support it or any drive through traffic that would see it.
Until the commercial area builds up and Moorefield Station gets started, business will be hard to sustain there.
It's a shame, because I like a lot of the businesses in there.

Aren't Starbucks stores franchised? So who gets to decide which one to keep open? Does it have to be a joint decision between Corporate and Owner? Or is it based on sales. I'm just curious.
