Our cat, Sunflower, has been missing since Friday (4/17) in the Overland Park area of Broadlands. He is black domestic long hair with a small white patch on his chest and mostly white whiskers. He is approx 16 pounds, no collar, and is an eldery cat. If you see him please call us at 703-724-9434. Thanks.

I just love black kitties. Are you doing a foot search with canned or bagged treats? Sometimes the shaking sound will rouse them from their hiding spot.

I hope he's safe and we'lll keep a look out for him too!

OH MY GOD! Someone has ripped down all the missing cat signs that we put up this morning. Sunflower is a kind, old cat and needs to be found. Why would a neighbor do something so mean? I'm in shock! :bawling:

I may have seen Sunflower last night, walking my dog near the intersection of Autumnwood Square and Vestals Gap Drive. It was dark, but I saw a dark colored, somewhat large, furry cat duck under a car parked in the first driveway from about 20 yards. By the time I got to the driveway, he was gone (maybe my dog spooked him).

It struck me as odd because we have one or two neigbors' cats around, but I didn't recognize this guy at all. It might be worth a try to poke around the area.

Best of luck, and I'll keep a sharp eye out for Sunflower.

That does seem strange. What possible reason would someone have for doing this????

    People suck :nono:

have you notified local dog walkers, like Woofies? (woofies.com) they are WONDERFUL about keeping an eye out and are all over the 'hood at all times of the day.

I saw a big black cat creeping through the long grass on Waxpool, near the apartments, not too far off of Claibrone. On the right side if you are leaving the Broadlnads.

At the risk of being severely chastised here on the forums, I can probably guess what happened to the signs... HLS is instructed to take down signs placed in the common area. That includes "For Sale" ,"20% off Haircuts", "Lordy, Lordy Look Who's 40" and "Lost Pet" signs. It's just the luck of the draw if they see them 1 day or 1 week after they are posted...This is in accordance with both Broadlands and Loudoun County rules and ordinances...please don't call in the mob demanding my execution! I'm a multi animal household and am really hoping that Sunflower is found, I'm only trying to explain why the signs were removed. An alternative might be to place flyers in the newspaper boxes of homes in the area where Sunflower was last seen and of course spreading the word here on the forums.

I can understand the rational for the two types of signs as they are commercial. The birthday ones are just plain stupid (but that's my opinion only). However, can't an execption for lost pet signs be made?

Clearly there needs to be a time limit and I am all in favour of holding the "signee" personally responsible for the removal of the sign after the time period (or after the pet has been found).

But to have a blanket policy that prevents residents from spreading the word about a lost animal seems a bit harsh.

A lost pet is an emergency situtation that is mitigated by getting the word out as fast as possible to as many people as practicle.

As pointed out many in other threads, not all residents use this forum or any other forum. We have a lot of people walking dogs and a lot of kids out playing. A poster can be an excellent venue to remind them of the lost animal and may make them a little more watchful for the lost animal.

How about the HOA have a policy like:

Lost pet signs need to be dated when they are posted. The HOA can even place a limit on the number of posters if they feel especially restrictive.
After the pet is found or two weeks, the person who posted the signs is personally responsible for removing all the signs they posted.

If an "old" lost pet sign is found (out of date) then the finder can snitch to the HOA and it can be handled like any other violation.

Is this not a better solution than a blanket rule about prohibiting emergency like postings about lost pets?

Let's not lose sight of the objective here.

The goal here should be to help the resident retrieve their lost pet... not hinder them. Lets help our neighbours not hinder them. :nono:

That certainly could be something that the Board of Directors considers. I'll bring it to their attention at the next meeting.

Thanks Maureen. We've been putting flyers in mailboxes as well. I've followed some of the leads posted here and I did find a black cat. Unfortunately, it was not Sunflower. Sunflower has a more Puma shaped face and walks like Puma as well.

is she big? this cat looked like it was stalking something- at a distance i thought it was a fox! not that it LOOKED like a fox, but it moved like a wild animal more than a li'l ol' house kitty.

it was fixated with big eyes on whatver it was going to pounce on- i couldn't see the whole body but my first thought was NOT that it was a house cat...

i hope that was her- i'm sure she's moved on by now from THAT spot but if it was her she is uninjured and clearly capable of getting food! good luck- i will keep my eyes open.

So sorry to hear about Sunflower. I just want to let you know that I live in Overland too and have a black shorthair cat that is often outside. He has no collar, his name is Sherlock, and he is very friendly. Just so you don't confuse him.

I also saw a black cat at my back door last night. I tried to get her to come in, but no go. She kind of talked to me, but kept backing up. I even tried giving her some cat food. This was also in the Autumnwood Sq/Vestals Gap area. I feel bad I couldn't catch her.

Thanks for the info. I did follow up on the previous lead in that area. I found a black cat at the end of Vestals Gap and Demott in the woods right next to the apartments. It turned out not to be Sunflower. The cat I saw had short hair and a round face. Sunflower has long black hair and a shiny coat. He has a bit of a (beer) belly and it looks like the tip of his tail is broken (it's not really broken, just looks that way). He can be a talker and he's definitely a scaredy cat. We'll check back in that area again...just to make sure. I've discovered that there are quite a few black cats that live in this area.
