Yesterday I had a guy come to my door purporting to work for ADT. He tried on several occasions to have me let him into my house (my husband was out and I was home alone). His unprofessional approach to selling security was a major red flag for me. Upon inspecting his business card more closely, his company is Absolute Security Inc USA, only an authorized dealer for ADT. Something about his nature made me very uneasy and I wanted to alert all other HOA members to watch out for this guy. He did make a follow-up call to my husband so the sale seems legit but his pushy approach towards a woman who was home alone was very disturbing.

Has anyone else had the same experiences?

It is a good idea to be suspicious. "selling" alarm systems is a great way to case houses.

We had people come to our door around 9pm last night, a bit ridiculous if you ask me.

I don't answer the door - unless I'm expecting someone. Our barking dog sends off the solicitors pretty quickly!

it seems like it's lose/lose with these alarm systems. If you put a sign out, you get the other trolls who come to your door telling you how unsafe you are if they cut your phone line first. We just had an alarm system put in...and i yanked the sign out of my yard. I don't want those either. if a sales guy wants to come to my door and hear it chime when i open it---then they'll see for themselves that their services aren't needed.

Rather than tell them to cut my phone line b/c i have a system---i'd rather they just crash thru the window and set it off.

To sign or not to sign, that is the question

This is always a difficult question concerning alarm systems. Should I adverstise that I have an alarm system?

Pro: Advertising may convince a burgler not to hit your home but move to a home that is not advertised.

Con: Advertising an alarm system just gives the burgler information so they can alter their plan.

It all depends on whether the burgler is interesting in burgling any house or specifically YOUR house.

The same question arises concerning the choice betwen a patent alarm and a silent alarm.

Pro: Patent alarm may scare a burgler away during a burgler.

Con: Patent alarms cause the burgler to escape before the police can arrive.

A silent alarm may allow the police to catch the burgler in the act.

These are not easy questions to answer nor is there only one correct answer.

Well this question was answered at the NW meeting last week. You all should have come it was very interesting.
Basically home security systems are a deterrent so the sign works was well as the system. The big problem with alarm systems is response time. By law the security company is required to contact every person you list before they contact the police. Since Loudoun county has a 3 alarm per year fine many people around here have 5+ people listed. After they do not reach any of those people then they call the police.
Well the dirty secret that Deputy Payne disclosed is that 75% of these calls are false alarms so the police do not come rushing sirens blaring. This makes response times in the area of 10 min - while most burglaries take less then 8 min so almost every time no one is ever caught.
Now back to the signs - when someone is deciding to break into your home they have to decide if the risk is worth the reward. thinking there is a possibility of an alarm can be just enough of a deterrent to make it not worth the reward.
Deputy Payne had a lot more interesting information he provided sorry more of you could not make it.

    Staci

Police responded in less than 2 minutes last year and yes it was in the middle of the night.

I told the last guy that tried to sell me an alarm system that I had my security already...right in my back pocket.

A few empty bullet casings laying around the back basement might give pause.
