So I was Reading the WP today and their was the article about not smiling for your ID card or Drivers's license. You can sort of grin, but cannot show teeth.

They have new face recognition software which chooses which picture they take is acceptable. The new cards are loaded with security features.

ALSO - and this IS important! YOU CAN NO LONGER GET YOUR ID CARD OR DRIVER'S LICENSE ON THE SAME DAY! it will be produced in Danville and mailed to you address a few days later. This is due to the new software...

So glad to here that in the WP, as MY DL expires on Tuesday (my b-day). So I guess I'm going in tomorrow!

The no smiling I can understand. Some of my professional IDs have had that same rule for years.

My question is who can smile while at the DMV??

The waiting for the physical license to be mailed sounds like a step back about 40 years.

    BTW happy birthday

I'm sure the pick-up in the branches will return eventually. The new IDs have all kinds of new junk in them.. and are b&w again :)

A person I talked to the other day had their old license punched that indicated they had applied for the new one. Not sure how long it is valid but it is suppose to work until the new one arrives

You should be fine. If you get pulled over, present your expired license and your 'receipt' from DMV for your new one, and explain that you are waiting for the new one to be mailed to you. The officer will be able to pull up your file using your old license and will see that you renewed/got a new one.

I'm sure that much of this is related to Real ID. I just had to go get a new license this week. I was given a paper temporary license to carry until I receive my new license.

I remember back when I got my first license (horse and buggy days) I was issued a paper temp license that I used until the "real" one came in the mail.

I am assuming the same will happen in VA. You will be given some receipt/temp license to use until the real one comes in the mail

However, if your license expires , then you have to show other ID to get a new one.

That would be a distorted picture too.... there has never been a trip to the DMV that has been easy or pleasant for me. They have screwed me over by giving me the wrong information every time, which has caused me to make additional trips to their offices. Our front license plate was stolen off one of our cars and I turned in the remaining one and they gave me new plates. They put in the computer that the old plates were stolen but they never associated the new plates to our car. So for two years we drove around with license plates that were not registered to our car... if a cop ran the plates it would have registered the old ones which said "stolen".

That same trip I had found out that they messed up the registration on my other car. 3 years I had the same plates and paid the property tax and they told me my car had different plates registered to the car from what I actually had on it. I showed them every registration card for 3 years proving that the plates I currently had on the car did INDEED belong to that car... did I get an apology for their mistake, for screwing up the registration? NO! They acted like it was MY fault and I ended up having to get new plates for that car too! :screwy:

The picture on my ID would look like a combo of :angryfire: and :censored: and

Sorry, no. I've never seen someone smile so big that I could no longer identify them.

VA doesn't even have said facial recognition software yet. They've indicated that they might possibly buy it at some point in the future.

Computer technology improves quickly. By the time they decide to get this software, smiling will likely no longer be an issue.

Anyway, watch the video. It will make you smile. ;)

you're allowed to smile....you just can't show any teeth. I heard that from a DMV spokesperson yesterday during an interview on WTOP.
