speaking of speed traps...if you're ever heading out to Shenandoah, be careful on Rt. 211. I got nailed last week. Troopers hiding out in the median behind tall grass...

which is why WE can hang out sharse- you are too purty and too fit!

BACK TO THE TOPIC- speed traps should be at dangerous places where speeding is a safety issue- there are few intersections worse than Claiborne and Ridegway for safety- people blow thru that stop sign at full speed. save a life AND collect county income- win win.

Before daylight savings I would see them all the time parked on the median with their headlights off. Just waiting to catch someone. Scary and dangerous because that road is very dark at night.

I hope the metro excuse for the speed limit is not accurate.... after all it'll be another 10 yrs till that happens. I'm sure they can revise the speed limit until then.

    Aren't you rightous.

Are we to believe that VDOT posted the current speed limit there in anticipation of what the road may look like a decade in the future? Did they inspect the potential development plans and carefully consider all public safety factors? And are those speed signs permanent? As that area is developed over the next many years - with additional cross streets, housing, commercial sites, intersections, and the possibly fictitious metro station - they can't re-post a different speed limit that makes sense to the current conditions as they evolve?

NO. It is totally random. It has nothing to do with safety or logic. That is an essentially barren road right now. The speed limit will be increased someday, even as future conditions make it less safe. In the meantime, we "law-breakers" will be pursued and have to pay the fines, yet the idiots who recklessly speed through busy parking lots and residential roads filled with kids will get away with it.

I'm sure if you bring up your concerns to VDOT, they can provide a justification to you. They may even change it like they did on Ashburn Village Blvd after a resident questioned the speed limit.

No, I am not righteous. I am just smart to obey the speed limit on a stretch of road known to be enforced.

I also have had a few tickets in my lifetime and I am not going to BLAME anyone or any circumstance other than MY driving.

As for those idiots who get away with "it", I am pretty sure you have gotten away with some bad driving yourself, just like most of us have at some time or another.

Be careful coming home from work on Shellhorn too. LCP like to sit in the median right before Home Depot.

I often see them there when it's dark because it's so dark on that road you don't see them until you are there and then bam! you get a ticket.

I think it sucks it's 35 but it's not going to change so watch your speed....

I think the speed limit is simply because they never raised it when they finally paved and finished the road. That.. and VDOT are demostrated idiots when it comes to road planning.

Oh you mean the School Board member (and resident) who got caught speeding, that faught his ticket. The judge ruled the additional fine was unlawful and ordered VDOT to increase the speed limit on AVB. I guess being in public office & being a lawyer has it's perks.:angryfire:

Why blame the School Board member? It's the JUDGE that should be blamed and chastised... Either he/she applied the rule of the law or screwed up. Has anyone stepped up to fight the decision? If not, why? If the additional fine was unlawful, should it still be imposed, even if it was a deterrent to speeders?

If being in public office and/or being a lawyer made a difference, then his/her fine would have never made it to court and would have simply disappeared.

Just throwing some stuff around to think about.

FYI - they are also set up at the 4-way stop at Ashburn Village Blvd & Waxpool today. Saw 2 people pulled over my first trip through there and then another one on the way back.

Here is the link to the development:

    http://www.loudounstation.com/AboutUs.html

What I think happens is that when the developer of the road (who used to have signs up stating that the road was built with no taxpayer dollars) wants to turn it over to VDOT, they have to set the speed limit based on what is planned for the area. Loudoun Station has been floating around for awhile - so they set it to 35 because of the number of residential units planned for the road.

We may disagree as it relates to the action of said school board member, as I have doubts an ordinary resident/driver could have had as much influence as this SB member.

As a SB member, the safety of students is paramount. Increasing the speed limits (to 45MPH) along AVB, where several schools sit parallel to AVB is pretty reckless, especially considering the amount of school crossing zones and foot traffic.

Keep in mind the speed limit and additional fine have been in place since '02 (we lived in AV at the time) mainly to thwart drag racing & excessive speed on AVB.

The SB member argued and convinced the judge to eliminate the additional fine completely (the HOA found out after the fact) and ordered the speed limit increased. I believe VDOT & the HOA are working to overturn the judge's decision.

I do agree with you, that the judge's opinion has set a bad precedence.

Perhaps you miss my point, which is not to personally attack, transfer blame, or advocate breaking laws. I think the speed limit is too low for the current road conditions and law enforcers take advantage of this. Our communities would be better served if they were watching for poor/speedy driving that causes accidents and endangers people.

35 is just fine for that road. Where is it written that it has to be 45 or faster? Get over it and just pay the ticket, we all make mistakes, you got busted, move on.

I really don't understand the issue here. Also how can you justify reckless driving because everyone else does it? Most people don't deserve drivers liscences for reasons such as this.
