Given the problems with Vista when it first launched, why on Earth should someone be jumping to purchase a pre-launch upgrade to Windows 7?

I'd love for one of you techies out there to try to sell me (us) on doing this (in all sincerity, honest!).

because you can run Windows 7 today and decide for yourself? You can download the RC1 and run it for free.

Vista was the radical jump forward that was very disruptive from a device support POV. Win7 does not make that radical jump so compatibility is much much better.

Win7 is more like Vista 2.0 - it builds on Vistas foundations and addresses many of the complaints people had with it.

This is my understanding of it as well in that you could almost think of Win7 as a SP3 of Vista rather than an entirely new OS. With Windows, I usually never touch a new version until SP1 is released and given I've had little issue with Vista am not sure I'll bother with Win7 until SP1 or later as well however I do admit the cost of the upgrade is tempting.

I usually wait 2 years after a new O/S is released before upgrading. This is probably a good reason why my current PC (bought in 2000 w/ME) is still operating quite well. I am still on XP HOME by the way. I will not ever touch Vista.

We'll see how it goes, but I wouldn't mind getting a new PC in 12-24 months, as long as Win7 is a success.

with shipping and tax, at Costco.com it is coming out to $52 for Home Premium. If you can drive to Micro Center, that is the best deal by far, even after factoring in the gas prices.

Did you factor in two drives to Micro Center? You have to go this weekend to get the coupon, then again later once the software is released. If you factor in the nearly 2 hours in the car for the two trips plus the gas, I am not sure the $10 savings is all that worth it unless of course you are combing the trip with other errands/etc. Even ignoring the travel time, I'd think the gas is not going to be too far off of $10 for the roughly 80 miles.

Been running Windows 7 for some time now. Absolutely love it. I hate vista. Stayed with XP and refused to upgrade machines because of vista. Windows 7 just works and doesn't annoy you and the new UI features work amazingly well. I like the aero peak feature a ton. Extremely useful and the new app bar is great. Much better than the mac dock IMO. Just a refined experience. I'm not waiting and I usually do.

yea as I thought about it some more, the Costco order is pretty good - I am not a big fan of all the hoops you would have to jump through for Micro Center.

But I do not see a 64 bit edition... That is what I am running now. Not sure that it is needed but I am running 6 gigs of Ram and 32 bit can't work with that....

Ordered from Newegg this morning. $10 to have it delivered to my door is more than worth it.

I am fairly sure I read somewhere that Win7 will ship with both 32 and 64 bit install discs.

I've been running RC1 on an OLLLLLLLLLD Toshiba Laptop. Given the age of the hardware - it did OK. It looks like, as before, sound drivers will be the killer.

Yep we have windows XP at home. sooner or later they will no longer support that so we'll have to make the change, but as techies ourselves we will not be using it for awhile. My laptop works great, but when MSN downloaded the latest Outlook updates, it disabled my email, and we had to reload it several times and take off the updates.

Of course this happened to my laptop - being the only one not actually plugged in a t a desk, rather than wireless. Still , that makes no sense. So the updates still are out there wanting to install, and I guess were going to take them one by one to see which one of the 3 is the baddie.

Thanks for the info/feedback. I've got a laptop running Vista and a desktop running Windows XP right now and I've never been able to get file sharing working properly--maybe it's the user (me), but I was thinking if I upgraded both to Windows 7 it would work easier.

Can I purchase one copy of Window 7 and legally (or illegally) install it on both of my personal computers?

When you purchase Windows 7 it has to activate - Micro$oft has goeetn very good at detecting the same disc being used on several machines with the same key. If you want to risk a penalty of 3 x the purchase price + $10K per offense, you can use the same disc & key on several machines:happygrin:

If you just want to try it on several machines, go to the M$ web site and get the realease candidate - it's free and you can infect as many PCs as you want.

Now, not that I have tried this but supposedly there's a registry hack that turns RC1 into a fully functional, never expiring copy of "Ultimate" Win7.

    Again - just sayin'.

What if I drive my Prius? We've owned it for a year and have had an average of 51MPG. I'm just teasing, driving to Vienna to go to Microcenter isn't my first choice, either.

Its much more then a SP release... but it's not the leap of faith that 9x->2000 was.. or XP->Vista was.

The biggest issue is simply relearning where some things are compared to XP... but it's not nearly as cumbersome as Vista. I have all three running here.. and I love my Win7 install. I've been using it as my main OS for a little bit over a month with no real issues at all.

If your machine is that old... don't bother upgrading. Just get a new machine and get the OS with that.

Part of the problem with Vista was it was quite a hog.. and combining that with inferior hardware which is common on low-end machines really lead to 'Vista is a pig' mentality. The Sony laptop the kids have was shipped with Vista, but it's way under what it should be to give a reasonable experience.
