Any suggestions? I know a lot depends upon what I'll be using the phone for. Mostly work (Calender, e-mail, web etc.). Not sure I'll need EVERYTHING the iPhone has, but I've also never had a phone that does that so I don't KNOW if I'd use it.

    Thoughts, suggestions, etcs?

I'm not MUCH of a tech head, but I'm also not like T8 who has a phone from 1980. How does that box you carry around with it fit in your pocket T8?

I recently upgraded to the 3GS from a first generation iPhone and I love it (both). I don't know anything about the Palm, never had one and am biased towards the iPhone. With that being said, the Palm is stupidly put together (sorry, couldn't resist).

Seriously though, the iPhone is great. We sync our work calendar to a .Mac account that allows me to be up to date with all events. The apps are practical and fun. My roommate actually downloaded a free level after hanging a picture so he could make sure it was straight. Having the iPhone is like having a mini computer with me at all times. Maybe the Pre does these things too, I don't know. What it comes down to for some people are carriers and price.

best of luck with whichever one you get.

I'd like to know more about the Palm Pre as well. Looking to upgrade my Moto Q which keeps freezing up like a PC!

My bf has looked at both. He is currently with Sprint and was looking forward to the Palm Pre, as he loved Palm in the past. He said that he went to check it out and the Pre seems like it was very cheaply made and kind of flimsy. He is looking into getting an iPhone when his current contract expires. On the downside, just remember with an iPhone you're locked into a $30/mo data plan, THEN you add whatever minute plan, text msg, etc that you want.

Thanks all. I plan on using the phone for a little fun and a little work. I have a 755p right now and am VERY happy with it. Does everything I need which is why I'm excited for the Pre. I've just been intrigued by the iPhone (as most other people have). The data plan with Sprint is going to be FAR cheaper and more realistic for my uses, but the gadgets are cooler on the iPhone from what I gather. Since it's all new software, I'm wondering if anyone out there has messed around with the Pre. What's it like in that respect?

If the iphone wasn't on AT&T I'd go for it. Everyone I know that has an IPhone complains about dropped calls and call quality. The PRE is on the arguably better network but the physical hardware is kinda lacking. The PRE software is supposed to be pretty good.

The iphone is probably the best phone for the family person out there but it's on a really bad network. I can't bring myself to sign a contract with AT&T. IMHO (and I hate apple... ask anyone lol)

The AT&T network is not really bad (dropped calls, and all this other BS). It's mainly a regional thing, as much of the network is built up from aquisitions and can vary greatly between regions.

For instance, AT&T supposedly is pretty bad in San Fran area. Of course the Bay Area is the center of the technology universe in the US, so AT&T picks up horrible press and mob-speak from that.

Around here - AT&T's voice network is great.

iPhone's have had complaints about poor reception from the start - and it's due to the phone's form over function mentality.

The problem with any other phone right now tho is iPhone has reached mass audience adoption. No matter what it's weaknesses.. its still going to be seen as the top dog (like the iPod+iTunes was) so much of the software and app development is going to be focused on that device.

Pre is the first device based on the new OS. I'd wait for the next attempt, etc. Some of the biggest things people wanted from the Pre like the physical keyboard.. are actually getting poor reviews. Plus the Pre today doesn't have any predictive text to auto-correct errors, etc.

Pre will fail to displace the iPhone, but that doesn't mean another WebOS phone may not do better.

I had ATT when I lived in Ashburn Village and before getting an iPhone and didn't have issues with coverage except in the Mount Vernon area. I'm now in LA and don't have issues except in our studios (I work at a sound studio that is built like a fortress).

iPhone supporters have had and will continue to have issues with the phone. The new phone and OS have added many functions that Mac (and iPhone) supporters have been asking for. We're still waiting for MMS and tethering. There have been assurances that MMS will be available by the end of the summer, but nothing on tethering.

I've owned a number of different phones over the years, but the iPhone is the first phone I have ever truly enjoyed owning. Apple has done a great job at figuring out what's annoying about mobile phones in general and fixing those annoyances with the iPhone. Visual voice mail is a great example. Another great example is the mute switch: tired of having to navigate through a menu to silence your phone for a movie? With the iPhone you just mute it via a switch on the side of the phone. The web browser renders web pages by shrinking them to fit (and allowing you to easily zoom in), unlike my previous phone (a blackjack) that rearranged webpages in really awkward and bizarre ways. Emailing pictures is really easy. Plus, don't forget the iPhone also functions as an iPod (although I have been using the Pandora app more than the iPod lately).

And I'm not a typical Apple fanboy either. I've never owned a Mac, always been a PC user.

I've never had reception or dropped call problems on AT&T with my iPhone. My previous phone was also with AT&T and I never had problems with it either. Before that I had Verizon and lived in Maryland and their coverage in our neighborhood was awful.

The new iPhone 3.0 OS makes tethering possible, but AT&T has not allowed it to be enabled so far. You can trick the iPhone into tethering with AT&T if you are willing to hack your phone.

I was very nervous about choosing the iPhone but once I got it I've never nothing but happy.

As I said I like the iphone quite a bit. I just really dislike AT&T and I am not alone in that. Dropped calls are a problem. Sure if you don't travel outside of broadlands you'll be fine but otherwise... I've known many people at my office that tried extremely hard to switch to the iphone but had to go back to their blackberries and verizon because of dropped calls.

I travel all around the country and haven't had problems with dropped calls since god knows when.

    YMMV I suppose.

How anyone thinks draconian Verizon is better to deal with blows me away. Nothing like buying a phone that has all it's features locked down so you can only use Verizon's pay-services vs. the free functionality available right in the phone. Oh yes, welcome to verizon.

Verizon was the ONLY service available when our baseball team spent a week in Luray. We T-mobile user were SOL the entire time... which- in hindsight, wasn't so bad! No email, no texts, no calls... it felt like 1984!

I just received the September issue of Consumer Reports and it compares the Palm Pre and the iPhone. It's a short article and they like both of them pretty equally. Here's their Bottom Line "The iPhone 3G S has a slight edge overall and is the best for multimedia. The Pre is better if you do a lot of messaging and prefer a real keyboard."

So...after all of this. I decided on the Blackberry Tour. Getting used to it actually and glad I made that decision. Someone at work had the Pre and I tried it. So, slow I didn't like the keyboard.

    Thanks for everyone's suggestions though!
