KZsMOM, usually when a curb is painted yellow and marked as a Fire Lane, there are actual sign posts up on both ends indicating the section is a fire lane. Are there no sign posts either?

Ok, thanks for checking that out for me. Personally, I see that as clear violation and should be reported. Fire lanes are there for a reason and if someone abuses them, they're putting everyone on that street at risk. Maybe a call to the Sheriff's non-emergency number to come down and take a look might help until the issue about the curb paint is resolved? I know when I've called them for a fire lane violation in the past, they showed up within 15 minutes to look into it.

    Just my 2 cents.

Nobody has mentioned parking in front of mailboxes. It used to be posted in the HOA newsletter that if a car is parked within 10 feet of a mailbox, it can be towed.

Really? I don't recall seeing this, but I could have overlooked it.

It does seem odd considering how close some of the homes are.

The mailman will leave you a note on your car if you're too close to the mailbox.

We have several neighbors who only have two cars and two car garages but they park one of their cars on the road rather than in their garage or in their driveway. I personally would rather have my car in my driveway or garage. I cannot think of a single reason why I would want one of my cars on the street rather than away from the street.

    From the April '08 newsletter...
Are you familiar with the Parking Regulations that are in effect in the Broadlands? Here’s a quick overview.

There are no assigned parking spaces in the Broadlands. Owners, residents, tenants and their guests may park in any legal space regardless of where there home is located.

Commercial vehicles, school buses, church buses, recreational vehicles of any type – boats, campers, motor homes and/or any vehicle which could not normally be used for daily transportation - may not be parked or stored in open view of any residential property, residential streets or open space or other Common area.

Junk or derelict vehicles may not be parked or stored in open view of any residential property, residential streets or open space or other Common area.

Vehicles must conform to all State and County codes, ordinances and statutes with regard to stickers, registrations and certifications.

Vehicles cannot be parked in a manner that obstructs vehicular or pedestrian traffic or on a sidewalk or any grassy or landscaped area.

Vehicles may not be parked with any type of “For Sale” sign displayed on the vehicle on any roadways or common area.

Vehicles may not park within ten feet on either side of a mailbox.

Vehicles parked in violation of any of these regulations may be towed at the owner’s sole risk and expense. If you have any questions regarding parking in the Broadlands please call the HOA office at 703-729-9704 Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.

I will run this in the newsletter again when space allows.

We have the same issue on Forest Edge Square. One side of the road is marked as the Fire Lane (curbs painted yellow) and the other is not. The neighbors on the non-fire lane side always park their cars in front of their driveway like it's their personal parking spot, making it very hard to get out of my driveway each day. Is this something I can bring up with the HOA? It impedes traffic and is honestly a huge annoyance for me :)

Most everyone in townhomes are having this issue. I would love for something to be done, hopefully something across all of Broadlands and not just on streets that complain.

Not sure what you want done. Eliminate all street parking by painting both sides yellow?
My guess is that would make far more people angry.
If a townhouse section can reach unanimous agreement on something like this, then you might be able to make a case to the HOA.

I would think there would be guidelines for minimum street width to allow street parking. As an example, Vestal's Gap appears to be plenty wide to allow for traffic flow and parked cars. Many townhouse streets are much narrower and street parking would impede traffic.

There are guidelines and the county fire chief is the one that makes sure they are enforced. We (the HOA) can ask him to reconsider roads we own however once a road is painted one way, it is not something that is easy to change on the homeowners.

Not only is it hard to drive up or down the street, it is virtually impossible to back out of your own driveway without hitting the car parked in the street!

That is correct. As the Dulles District appointee to the county's Facility Standards Manual Public Review Committee, we recently finished up several meetings devoted to this very issue.
On private streets, the HOA could reduce the amount of parking allowed, but could not increase it.

I want to make my opinion clear. I understand when someone is loading or unloading their car and TEMPORARILY parks on the curb in front of their house. It's the cars that are parked and impeding traffic because people don't want to have to walk far.

There was a police officer on my street this weekend. I believe they were called because of people in the fire lane, but it got me wondering if the topic of street width and parking has been discussed with the fire chief yet.

The weirdest thing is how they seem to have picked what is the yellow side and what isn't. In my opinion the sides with the driveways should ALWAYS be yellow and the sections with continuous curbs where people could legitimately park should be left open. Then there are the areas where the FIRE LANE is on the opposite side of the street from the hydrant.... does this make it legal to park in front of the hydrant??? Very strange.

fire lanes are about ensuring access to the property - not hydrants. hydrants are always illegal to park in front of.

I live near the path on Ellzey Drive. On one side of the street is a pipestem and on the other is Bankbarn. It's amazing how people park their cars. There is an area between the path and the pipestem and someone parks a car there! I've watched kids and adults come on the path and they have to go out on the street to check for oncoming traffic before they can cross. I've spoke with HOA and VADOT a while back but nothing was ever done. Coming from Bankbarn cars will park on the corner at an angle so that the frontend is on Ellzey. There needs to be no parking on both sides at the entrance of Bankbarn and about 10 ft on both sides of Ellzey for safe crossing at the path. Also the speed that cars travel on Ellzey is unreal. Unfortunately it may take someone getting hit by a car to have anything done about parking and speeding .
