Thanks for posting this. I'm pregnant, so at the top of the "must have the shot" list, but very torn as to whether to get it or not. With it being so new I do have reservations about the safety and long term affects.

I think it is a very wise move to evaluate the risks of any vaccine against the benefits.

There is a risk from any vaccine that the patient needs to understand in order to make this important health decision.

As with animals - I think you can over vaccinate yourself. Me? I stay away from flu shots of any kind and I haven't had the flu in 25 years, not even a cold. (I hope I haven't jinxed myself). I eat lots of fruits and vegetables and also exercise every day and walk all year, no matter how cold or snowy or rainy it gets. I think exercise and walking keeps my immunities up and it works for me, so I'll continue to do so. :)

Oh there is considerable debate on pet vaccinations. That is a whole other box of milk bones. Not quite sure where I stand on pet vaccinations. A lotta good information on both sides of the argument... just like for human vaccinations.

I have seen the devastating effects of Gullain-Barre on two people I know. Weeks of complete inmobility (imagine your spouse bed ridden for weeks, unable to move at all - essentially paralized, and you not knowing if he/she will recover) and permanent life long physical disabilities. After seeing it first hand, I always consider every vaccination. It's a very scary side-effect.

I think that after the first series of vaccinations, dogs should have titer tests to determine existing immunity.

I have Guillain-Barre Syndrome, I was diagnosed January 28, 2009 a day that changed my life forever. Everyone is right to be concerned about getting the Swine Flu Vaccine but I did not get it from a Flu vaccine the doctors baffled as to how I got it I hadn't been sick. By having Guillain Barre my choice has been taken away the vaccine is not an option for me. I also have COPD which puts me at a higher risk not to mention that the virus itself can kick start my Guillain Barre into high gear with another bout of full blown paralysis.
I guesss what I am saying is not to fear the vaccine, weigh your risk factors of catching the Swine Flu and make an educated desision

My best friend's son had Guillain-Barre Syndrome back in 2000. He was 4 years old at the time. It got to the point where he was on a ventilator for awhile, then it gradually retreated.

During his rehab, they gave him aquatic therapy to do, to help him regain control and strength. Now, 9 years later, he's a competitive swimmer who regularly gets good Q-times at his swim meets in Georgia and Florida.

That's exactly what we do with our dog, she's got an excellent immune system and our vet isn't "vaccine happy".
