Sunnydog - I am with you! My husband and I cleared the sidewalk and part of the corner of Summerhouse Place and Glebe View Drive so our children could safely get on the bus this morning. No attempt was made to clear this area at all by the homeowner. Seriously, I just don't get it. People claiming there is no where to put the snow..... that is simply a cop out!

Thanks to good neighbors in Southern Walk, a few people ended up digging out the bus stop and clearing the sidewalks (about 5 houses worth) yesterday.

I agree everyone should shovel their own sidewalk, but let's go easy on those in townhouses who have no front yard into which they can shovel snow.

I saw your husband doing just that! What a guy. He was hard at work chipping through that stuff.

89Viking -- good for you for taking your children's safety into your own hands instead of complaining about who is responsible for doing what.

Hoping for another blizzard so the whiners can whine. "I did this..." Me, me, me.." "How come my "neighbor" didn't shovel?" Instead of referring to that person as neighbor, you should refer to them as "the person that lives next door to me.." or even "those people." Dastardly neighbors not shoveling! They should be tared and feathered and put on display for public viewing/humiliation...oh, that's what some have already done with this forum. Spend that negative energy on something more positive, like yourself or your kids, or even your imaginary friend, but to point out specific families on here is shallow.

Eh. It probably was not the best way to approach the issue but at least now those non-shovelers know to get their tails in gear and do what is expected of them AND legally required by the county - which they should have done in the first place. Many people shovel for their neighbors but that doesn't mean one shouldn't do his/her own work or work together.

FYI - that spot on Ellzey by the pipestem that isn't shoveled belongs to the HOA - as does the area past the house near the corner of Glebe View and Vestals. If the HOA can clear the walking paths, why aren't they clearing the HOA sidewalks?

They were clear until VDOT came and plowed them under again. The HOA and your $$ are back out there at work again reclearing the sidewalks as we speak. I know the HOA did them to start with as I walked them several days ago with the contractor.

wouldn't it be great to coordinate community volunteer schedules to help relieve some of the cost of the plows? this is why we should have street captains. i have been thinking of trying to implement a street captain program for a while now...we are the broadlands...we are the children...

great idea Sunny - when we lived in another neighborhood in southeastern VA we had block captains in our development. We did not have a formal HOA there but the block captain system really helped. :)

I am not sure if this would be the correct forum for this, but I was wondering who was responsible for plowing the town homes across from Arundell court? I ask because as we shoveled out our driveway, and the neighbors shoveled the walk ALL the way to the corner a plow from the town homes parking lot came and put all of the snow from said parking lot on the clean corner and walkway. They actually do this every snow, or they drop it in the intersection, and I am not sure who to contact about it. Salt to the wound was when I asked the driver to please remove what he just did, he said "Sorry private contractor, cant touch these roads".

Similar thing happened just before the second storm last week. This plow pushed the show down the street, spilling a lot on to our driveways. I went out and told him that he is dumping snow back on to my cleaned driveway. He didn't say anything. After cleaning the street, he went to each and every driveway and cleaned the snow he dumped, but mine. Probably, he was made at me for saying that.

I wish I knew who contracted the plow drivers for that set of homes, I would call them, as I don't think they realize how bad the mouth of Arundell is. It is one car wide, and two thirds of the snow is from the parking lot across the street. I am sorry to hear that you were plowed back in, that is alot of work to have undone.

A big thank you to the zoning officials for addressing this swiftly and effectively with the specific homeowners involved.

This was a great teachable moment for civic responsibility and lessons learned for future storms.

Suggestions for proper plowing and sharing plats for demarcation of sidewalks and utilities were also shared with the public safety and zoning office.

In a perfect, harmonious world those affected would be able to resolve this issue personally and respectfully. While that could not happen I am grateful that there are professionals who can enforce the rules where social norms do not exist.

True. But, I had no other choice. I couldn't stand out and wait till he finished to see whether he is cleaning the mess he made in our driveways. For me to wait till he finished means waiting at the door for an hour or so. I don't think even you would have waited that long to see whether he is done.
