When is yard waste pickup starting up again? I've seen several neighbors with the yard waste bags out on the curb, but wasn't sure if they're picking up yet and I didn't want to put it out if it's not going to be picked up.

I noticed that in Broadlands in many residential streets plowed by VDOT have a lot of sand that was laid down by VDOT....I swept up a lot of it in front of my driveway. What happens to the sand on the streets? Will the state be cleaning it up or does the HOA clean it up or what?

    Thanks!!!

I personally think Mother Nature will take care of the sand. I doubt VDOT has any funds to perform cleanup, nor do I think the HOA should spend money on something that will be taken care by a few rainstorms...

Has there been any thought given to keeping "yard waste pick-up" year round? Or at least every other week? We utilize this for composting and obviously continue to have compostable food scraps from January through March. And sometimes we do have yard waste, ie cutting back the grasses at about this time every year. I know there would not be a great deal of participation, but thought it was worth asking. Thanks.

Yard waste can be mixed with regular trash in the months of January, February and March per Loudoun County's Solid Waste Management Plan. I'm not sure that the county facility accepts separate yard waste - meaning that it goes into the trash- except for Christmas trees which they shred for mulch during those times.

But there are issues with waiting for Mother Nature to take care of the sand too.

Until we do get a few good gully-gushers, the sand that helped us get traction on icy roads can now cause loss of traction. It can pile up in storm drains and cause backups.

The sand can also be recycled and used again. Al Gore would approve! :D

I can't tell you the number of bike spills and 2 year old falls over the weekend due to the sand.

What happens during April - December with yard waste then? Is it just thrown in the landfill? I thought it was being composted? If not, then what's the point of separating it?

    Thanks.

It is composted at the county facility, that is why they require it be sparate from trash during those months and why the hauler will not take it with regular trash. I believe they do not compost it in the winter months.

Ok, thanks. I suppose we'll just try and hang on to our composte bags until April.

Spent some time in the yard this week cleaning up and we were happy to see our yard waste bags were taken along with the regular trash on Monday AND today.

they will pick it up before April 1st it just goes with the regular trash not a separate pick up. After April 1st the county requires it to be separated.

We had some bags out today (due to timing issues this year we couldn't postpone this yard work until after the April pickups started) and they weren't picked up. We called the company and the owner himself (very nice guy) came by within 15 minutes to check it out and promised to send the truck back. They were back within 30 minutes and took it all away.

...and my bags look so lonely just sitting at the curb all by themselves, unwanted and unloved. Guess I'll put them in the trash bin for Monday. It'll be just like putting lipstick on a pig.
