BUMP - Is there any update on the Blue Moon Construction basement projects or updated information about other basement contractors that might have just finished a project? We are looking to get quotes and start this project. Thanks!!

Our basement project with Blue Moon wraps up this week. They did phenomenal work - looks great! Project was not without its bumps (mainly cabinet supplier issues and some associated delays in timeline), but JK was very flexible and responsive. PM me if you'd like to swing by to see work.

Any chance to see some photos of the project? Or we could all show up at your house for a "christening"!

We are in the process of finishing up our basement. We are using bluemoon based on earlier recommendations mentioned on the board. The project is runing way behind at this point, but most of the milstones have been completed. We plan to post a more elaborate post once thye basement is completed, for now feel free to IM or email me if you like information about the work that was done.

FYI - We selected Blue Moon for our basement and the project will be finishing up within the next month. If we had a choice to do over again we would not select them as the contractor. We have additional projects that we will be doing and Blue Moon will not be invited to bid. If you want additional information please PM and we will provide.

Ours is done. We're pretty happy, but there's a couple of things that were less than stellar.

I strongly recommend AGAINST using Blue Moon Construction.

We contracted Blue Moon to finish our basement in Summer of 2011 and were disatisfied with some aspects of the finished product, but TOTALLY UNHAPPY with their complete failure to get the work done on time, to supervise/manage their workers and to deal with us honestly.

They missed every single deadline they set, lied to us repeatedly about the reasons for the delays (when not making flimsy excuses) and then had the nerve to ask for a prepayment of the final draw when they were already more than a month past the contract due date. To even get the thing done, we had to do some of the work ourselves and bring in others. All told, our 45 day project took more than 100 days to complete and nothing got done unless we complained daily.

We talked to some folks who work in this market such as interior decorators, tile companies, etc. and the word on the street is that JK might have had a good thing going a couple of years ago. But, they have taken on WAY too much work and now they have hired a bunch of supervisors with no experience and they bring in subcontractors (who they probably picked up at the 7-11 in Herndon) for virtually everything. Then they completely fail to supervise the work or follow-up.

Some of the work was okay, but I could never trust what they said.

I think there are better options mentioned here.

I agree with some of what rwood wrote. I do agree that JK seems to be in over his head. Our construction manager, while a very nice guy, was young and we had to monitor everything, more than we should have. He was not the original one we were told we were going to have. They switched out just as constructions started. Workmanship is good, but deadlines mean almost nothing (not uncommon in construction), but don't tell me 4-5 weeks and then take almost 8. We are overall mostly happy with our basement, but it could have been finished sooner and some of the finish work could have been better. We also ended up spending $1500 on furnace repairs after drywall and sawdust got into and shorted out our circuit board. After I asked at initial bid and during framing that they put plastic up and was told they would. They finally did, but not until after drywall went up, just before mudding and sanding, by then it was too late. I asked about plastic, because I KNEW what happens when it isn't done. We ended up need a pressure switch and a complete cleaning as well as the circuit board. I'd say, go in aware that delays are the norm and that you have to stay on top of things. We are not high maintenance, yet we were made to feel that way sometimes.

Agree. One of the supervisors on our job didn't know how to predrill a hole for a screw. After explaining how to do it, he used a drill bit that was too big!

During installation for a hardwood floor, they were laying the floor without staggering the joints and then looked perplexed that the slats were different lengths.

Just want to give an example where some improvements could be made. Our project was completed timely, but as a previous poster mentioned, some of the work was less than stellar.

we are currently contracting Asset Construction to finish our basement, and at the halfway mark now, we are very impressed with the work ethic and craftsmanship we've seen so far.while it hasn't been without a few hiccups and changes, the way kevin has quickly address every issue has shown true professionalism. I'll reserve making a complete recommendation until the job is completed, but so far, so good!

btw, we were just about to sign with blue moon when a few issues came up within the contract that made my husband uncomfortable then ticked off, so we decided against them.reading the above posts confirm e did the right thing!

Yea Blue Moon will not be getting my work either. I have been asking around a lot and the complaints I hear are not good... and they are consistent. I was really hoping to find a company or General Contractor that is more of a family business, a local specialist that really does basements as a specialty.... but I am still looking. Any other recent recommendations? And I will look into Asset Construction, never heard of them.

We used Corbin Nathan, a local Broadlands resident, to do our full basement finishing. His company his EG&J Contracting. PM me and I can send you his phone number and email address. We were very happy with the finished product though there were a few items they had to fix because we are super picky. He did a full bar with appliances and granite counter, 1 and 1/2 baths, egress window, bedroom, laundry/storage room, built in shelving/closets and general finished space. We just have to furnish & decorate now.
