Has anybody used Green Sun out of Hamilton for planting new trees and general landscape design? Thanks

I'm also looking for a company to plant two new trees (approximately 10-15 ft tall). I need the two dead ones removed and two new ones planted in its place. The quotes I've received for this is generally around $300 per tree (which includes the price of the tree and planting) and around $200 to remove and dispose of the dead trees.

Does this price seem reasonable? If anyone can recommend a good person/company to do this kind of work, that would be great.

    Thanks!

I would have a garden center like Merrifield/Meadows/Green Works install the trees for you - they will generally have a 1 year warranty on their work.

I was very pleased with the service I got from Glenn at Meadows Farms. Can't say about the actual project, as he hasn't installed the trees [scheduling is becoming a problem from MY end] but the customer service and attention to detail on the landscape design were amazing!

    Highly recommended:

I need to get a couple of new trees planted. I did some research on what is native and what is pest resistant and have narrowed the choices down to a Nellie Stevens holly or a Thuja Green Giant (or Thuja Emerald? What's the difference?). I want something that offers some privacy without too much bulk. The Leyland Cypresses we had before came down in the snowstorm but were a bit bulky anyway - although the photo of the Leylands make them look narrow, ours were at least 5 feet wide. I don't know what's normal.

If we do buy a couple of them and they were under 5' tall, how hard is it to dig through the clay and dirt around here to get them planted? I'm guessing it would be worthwhile to pay someone to do it. If so, does anyone have any recommendations for where to buy or who to install? Maybe the Meadows Farms folks (but not the one toward Leesburg, apparently)? Order online or buy at Costco and then just have someone plant them for us?

Any ideas or opinions are welcome! :)

I like the Ned Stevens, they offer prolific white flowers in the spring and red berries in the winter. We have 11 of them planted in our yard, however a word of warning - it seems the bumble bees LOVE the white flowers, so it's best not to plant them in a high foot traffic area.

We also have Leyland Cypress, but they are slow growers and tend to grow straight up and bag worms seem to love them. I decided to plant a few of these in our side yard and have been pleased with them.

But...my favorite choice for privacy/screening is the Cedrus Deodara, it similar to other pine/cedar trees - but offers softer needles. I also like the grayish green of the new grow and how it contrast to the darker green.

    Hope that helps.

We had several Nelly Stevens and Leylands planted in our yard over the past few years. Based on the past snow storms, I wouldn't plant Leylands again due to their shallow root systems and significant branch damage. The Nelly Stevens held up perfectly. We bought trees at Blue Mount (they usually have a 20% off coupon in the paper around this time and discount some evergreens even further) and had them delivered for $45. We took some time examining & picking out the trees, and they have been perfect and significantly cheaper than other area nurseries with the coupon. Without the coupon, Blue Mount is more expensive than Meadows, but much closer than Merrifield. Blue Mount has a 6-month and 12-month warranty. We then hired Broad Run Construction to plant the trees - I can't remember how much it was, but it was very, very cheap (much cheaper then the nursery). Their "Water Irrigation" division does residential plantings. We left the trees in the spot we wanted along with a bag of soil additives (bumper crop from Blue Mount) and they did a great job. I was actually here the day they showed up & watched the process through the window. They were planted perfectly, took time mixing the additive with the clay and have lasted. Broad Run's number is in the phone book/google. They don't have a website and usually do commercial contracts.

We've also planted numerous trees on our own (really depends on the time we have available). For this clay and with the construction top soil on the lots, you need a mattock (not a shovel). A couple big whacks with the mattock and then use a shovel to get out the clay & you are set. It isn't too bad.

I've gotta get one of those. Last tree I planted I used a shovel supplemented with a sledge hammer and one of those spikes for landscaping timbers I had in the garage...

A few years ago when I took out some bushes I used a pick-axe. I felt pretty cool swinging the axe.

Thanks for the tips so far!

Just today, we had 2 dead trees cut and piled, two huge trees, $200. The company is Knotty Woods, and Lani (Lonnie) is awesome! Everyone else was over $600!

I'll have to find her number, she doesn't have a website.

After reading the gutter cleaning thread I caught this and laughed. How is that Ned Stevens working out for you?

We have been using James and his Green Sun crew for 4 yrs now. Very happy with them, quick service, they always clean up after themselves. I like that they email a spreadsheet at the beginning of the season and you just pick what you want done for the year.

    I would recommend Green Sun.

Two trees fell during one of the recent storms a few weeks back - one was 8" and the other 11" - $120 to cut and remove.
